It could just be that the dynamics at play in Japanese high school differ in some important way for you from American high school.

Sempai/kouhai relationships? Cram school and the notoriously stressful high school entrance exams? The cultural festivals and sports festivals?

That sort of thing?

And maybe because it's easier to find programming about slice-of-life, high school days that don't revolve around boys and fashion. There are those too, of course, but there seems to be a lot more that are just slapstick, situational comedies or just... about everyday problems and stuff.

That might be it, honestly.

I mean, I'm not in the same boat as OP by any means, but there's something nice about shows like Azumanga Daioh where it focuses on friendship and school events, not "omg who's going to ask me to the prom?" I know that's not what all American high school is like, and that there can be dating/relationship worries in Japanese series, but there is a different dynamic.

Yeah, this. And even when romance is a major factor, shoujo is more likely to have it be about one sweet relationship developing than have the protagonist sleeping with a different guy every 3 episodes.

Yeah, this. The high school culture I grew up with has more in common with Japanese high schools than American. Cram school? We had after school 'extra lessons' which adds up the about the same thing. Intense exams? Oh baby. Rigid uniforms? Shit, don't get me started, we had regulation BRA COLOURS. I never could get into High School AU fics because they're inevitably American-style high schools and I just can't relate.

I can see how you'd relate more easily to Japanese high school situations!

Oh, wow, and I thought our school regulations including specific ribbon and shoe colours we had to wear was strict. Regulation bra colours, though, how would they even check?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The uniform was white shirts and white undershirts. There were legions of prefects on the lookout for anything bright enough to show through from underneath, or a stray strap. We had mass uniform checks at random a few times a month, from hairstyle to fingernail length to sock height. It took me a year into university to realize, hey, I'm actually free to wear makeup now if I want.

All the same, it was a good school with some great teachers and I had fun times.

Ohhh, I thought that might be the case only after I responded. Makes sense!

HAHA, fingernail length! We had those every Saturday, during morning assembly. I still clip my nails short enough to not have any whites at the edge. xD

I'm sure! I had some fine teachers too and the most awesome principal. ^^

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, although I don't hate American-style high-school dramas, I certainly don't find much that relates to my own high-school days.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah that makes you a weeaboo, sorry. But there's nothing really wrong with being a weeaboo.

This is one of the best comments on F!S ever.

I'm usually more okay with Western high school shows than Japanese ones, tbh.

I think it's because the anime high school stuff I've seen was either fall asleep levels of boring, or too filled with ZoMGZ qUIRKY chARACTERS!!!randumb XD.

Strangely enough, I actually like Azumanga Daioh, despite it blatantly being the later.

Maybe it's because Azumanga Daioh was one of the first Japanese moe/quirky girl character shows to hit the West? It also came before the craze of cute girls doing nothing in shows got out of hand.

I didn't know about it when it first came out. I don't really keep up with stuff like that.

I just know that it, unlike stuff like Lucky Star or Haruhi, was actually funny and enjoyable to me.

And them doing nothing (Lucky Star) is just something that I don't get at all.

Haruhi is barely about high school despite being set in one

I kind of understand where you're coming from OP. Japanese culture is different from American (or Western culture, assuming you're one of the two). Japanese high schools are different from high schools in North America and Europe. Personally, I think anime with a high school setting can get old (Azumanga is a good one) but I do enjoy some anime like that partially because of the setting. I mean, it's idealized, but it makes me wish I had that kind of experience in high school instead of the one that I did get. Also it makes me nostalgic for the friends that I did have, and the pleasant experiences I managed to have. Whereas tv shows/movies set in American high schools tend to be so unrealistic to me I can't usually enjoy them (again, the anime portrayals of high schools in Japan are no doubt idealized as well, but since I don't have any frame of reference there, being American, that doesn't affect my enjoyment)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, but that is because American high schools are ridiculously annoying and chaotic. They're more like zoos.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
How does liking one genre of television show make you a weeaboo just because it comes from Japan. Perhaps weeaboo doesn't mean what you think it means.
