It only bothers me because Martin went on forever about how sparkly special the Targaryen are for having white hair and no one ever have white hair ever how special special special, but the moment the special white hair stopped looking good, it conveniently got changed.

Somewhat unrelated, but I always found this neat, too.

My Japanese isn't great either but this is something people do? I see it mostly with combinations of katakana and kanji though. For example, someone might write the kanji for car but the furigana will say automobile in katakana. It's kinda arbitrary.

Oh hell I took aikido myself and use those tactics on larger and stronger opponents, but Natasha doesn't just have to "escape", ostensibly - she has to win. And that's a whole different story. Breaking someone's hold is fine, but could you actually punch/choke that guy out if he knew how to fight, too? Probably not, unless you were considerably more skilled than he was.

Of course there's more to it than that, there's speed and technique and resourcefulness, but "strength has nothing to do with it" or "strength doesn't matter" is just false. Strength is one of many factors that definitely matters.

Though, honestly, in IRL fights - not just pretendy martial arts funtimes of which I've had a great deal of experience as well with set rules and regulations - I find that the person who wants the most to win usually does, unless the combatants are grossly mismatched. Which means the fight doesn't go to the strong, the swift, or even the talented - it goes to the psycho who's willing to truly, permanently damage another human being as much as possible as fast as they can. Loooootttaaa people I know in the military say the same thing about lethal combat, as well. The one willing to kill the fastest, wins. So being a ruthless killer would probably carry Natasha through the day more than her skill or speed or talents, honestly.

Huh, I haven't read on a clear day either. Thanks for the rec!

Whatever turns you on, anon. I'm sure your fanfiction of this is fapworthy to you, and a few others too.

I'm one of those weird people who actually think he's really beautiful. *g* And boy, did I like his look as Khan - especially with the coat and the mussed up hair.

*g* Have you watched Warhorse? There you have them both on screen together, interacting and wearing pretty uniforms. Only for a short time, but it's great for comparing looks/faces.

Re: Attitude towards retcons?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I actually wrote kind of an essay about this recently, since DC's current attitude toward retcons annoys the hell out of me. It boils down to "I like retcons that build and hate ones that destroy." If you think of continuity like a museum, good retcons are the ones that turn displays into new rooms, and bad retcons are like ones that blow up rooms or seal them off.

So like, I like Speed Force as a retcon for the DC speedsters, since it takes a bunch of scattered origin-story displays and builds a new wing for them and adds a bunch of new stuff. It builds. Whereas Parallax being a yellow fear bug demolishes several whole wings of canon, from Hal's character development to everything that was unique about Kyle. It destroys. (And then remodels the entire Green Lantern section to be about itself and its siblings.) The retcon of the National Comics character Quicksilver into Max Mercury dusts off an abandoned artifact from storage and makes it into new room. That builds. The Top being responsible for all of the Rogues' reformations, ever, obliterates not only several characters' growth but disrespects the optimistic, progressive mood of decades of comics. That destroys.

But I do think that you ought to have a really good reason to do even a "building" retcon, rather than throwing them around willy-nilly whenever the mood takes you. You have to stick with them for awhile, too, otherwise all the breaking and building makes the museum structurally unstable and nobody wants to go inside anymore (to push a metaphor too far). In general, I prefer in-universe solutions to story problems, but sometimes that's not possible, and sometimes retcons can be good. But they're just usually lazy solutions to lazy writing instead, and oftentimes a better story could have come out of dealing with the fallout of bad writing instead of waving it away.

TL:DR: A retcon should add more to the story than it takes away.

I guess it's as simple as a difference in tastes. I'm one of those weird people who actually think he's really beautiful, and I loved him in the movie - in fact, Kirk and Khan were what I liked the most.

Oh true dat. It sounds cliche as fuck but in IRL fights one of the best advantages a woman can have is that dudes really do assume she can't do anything but scream or slap or flail, and they really do pull their punches, even subconsciously. They really do seem to think "har har I'll just hold her arms or something, that'll make her submit!" because it works in the movies?... and then get their kneecaps kicked out or kneed in the gut or junk.

Y u do dis, dudes.

Of course dudes who really want to harm women tend not to fall for that shit, unfortunately. Only the misguidedly chivalrous patronizing.

Surely that's just a matter of the right program and a big enough 3D printer? I mean, if it works with a gun...

While I don't think getting a more athletic-looking actress would have been a bad idea either, it suits the character to look like a femme fatale in this case - i.e. someone who can easily be underestimated.

I just wish ScarJo actually did some training or something so she didn't have to have a double in every action scene. Oh, the horrible wigs and the face shoop! Why is our cgi not better. So much suspension of disbelief breaking uncanny valley to be had. Why is it when actors get hired for an action role their first response is to GET JACKED and when actresses land one they're like DIET AND MAKEOVER AND PUSHUP BRA?

No, don't answer that, I already know and am depressed. I'll go watch Haywire again and cry softly into my moonfoods.

Players like the abuse. While a TPK hurts for the moment, they become the best and most-told stories years down the road.

...This is why we love Dark Souls, I think.

Wow, I had no idea so many people don't know about freeform RPing haha. There are many ways to play and calling it collaborative writing...It may be what your group is like but most freeform RPGs aren't collaborative writing. But if the GM is shitty it's hard to enjoy a game.
