Except OP, like many of us, would pay for it if the option were available, and DOES pay for it when it finally becomes so. This is corporate shortsightedness, not individual fail.

Your neighbor has a nice car. You want to buy it. He doesn't want to sell it. So you take it anyway, because you should have a nice car, and it's his fault he doesn't want to sell it to you.

But his car is now worth less. Maybe it doesn't matter to him but it does to the people who sold it to him. So now they can't make enough money to keep their dealership in business so no one can buy a car at all.

But the dealership wasn't selling cars in the area where you live anyway. The dealership loses no money, and their business remains the same as before.

It is not stealing/theft. The person watching a non-sanctioned copy is not taking anything from anyone else. In your example, the car is gone, because the person wants it/takes it. What is physically taken in this instance? Did the person steal DVDs? Nope! Did the person steal a master copy of the work in question? Nope!

Yes, it is illegal, but it is not theft.

What the fuck? No they wouldn't. That is blatantly untrue. Copyright infringement is copyright infringement. It's a completely separate area of law.

Go read the wikipedia article on copyright infringement or something. It will be a far better use of your time than blabbering on about things you so obviously don't understand.

In some places there are exceptions to the relevant laws about copyright infringement (not theft) if you download a copy of something for temporary use but don't keep it. IME, they date back to before music streaming services were as common.

Something doesn't have to be a physical object to be stolen. Intellectual property is as much open to theft as is a painting.

But unlike your scenario, nobody is deprived of anything by someone instructing their hard drive to arrange the ones and zeroes in a particular way. That's the thing about information: it's freely replicable, barring the cost of obtaining and running the hardware.

It is still someone's property, they made it by putting a lot of effort into the project and then they distributed it, they expect to be reimbursed for it. Just because it is not a physical item does not mean it is not someone's property.

The people who stand to make money off the sale of the media are deprived of the DVD cost. Stay with me here...

1) Jim wants a season of Dr Who. It's not available for purchase in his country. Jim therefore cannot watch the show, and the company does not increase its income. No one benefits.

2) Same situation, except Jim downloads the season. Jim gets what he wants, but the company still does not make any money for the transfer of the episodes. Jim is the only one who benefits from the theft.

For much of the internet, there seems to be an overall feeling of "I want it, so I should have it". While that's not wrong in and of itself, people frequently overlook the fact that sometimes life just isn't fair, and we don't get what we want if we don't or can't come by it fairly.
