I don't like the fact that romantic relationships are so important now but at the same time I love Amy and Bernie, so...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I kind of wish they had just been introduced as characters outside of the romantic relationships. Like, just more cool nerds to join the fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The way my mom sees it (not saying I'm agreeing with her on this) is that the extended adolescence of the earlier seasons can only last so long without becoming bizarre. Most people do start settling down around their thirties, and getting into relationships is part of that.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I lost my interest in the show when it became all about the relationships. I just really loved Penny's friendship with the guys (and on that note I still wish there hadn't been any romance between her and Leonard).

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, back when she was a remotely normal girl instead of a rude alcoholic sex maniac. It's disgusting. Leonard's a whiny git now too - and how ANYONE puts up with Sheldon's utterly rude and disrespectful behaviour is beyond me. I have ADHD, OCD and autistic tendencies (as well as a fairly high IQ), and I would NEVER EVER EVER dream of treating someone the way Sheldon treats his "friends". It's abhorrent.

It's a double edged sword. Because if they didn't have those romantic relationships, I highly doubt they would have added all the ladies on that show. So if BS romantic relationship crap means I get Thor Hammer geekery then I'm willing to tolerate it. Unhappily, but tolerate it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Being so hard up for female characters that you accept the introduction of a convenient vagina in the guys life really isn't that much better.

That's the problem though, you're not going to get writers to start introducing female characters outside of romance until you stop watching shows where that is all they do.

I know we're all guilty of it at one time or another(because it's often hard to find good media where women aren't just shoehorned in to be a romantic interest) but in my opinion TBBT is a show that you can live without.

I'd just like one of the girls to actually like comics and such. I'm all for brain geekery, but having one gf or just a girl friend like geeky things would be nice.

But of course it would probably backfire :/

(Anonymous) 2013-05-22 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's what bothers me as well. I thought "yay, more geeky girls" but somehow they are just as baffled by the guys' love for sci-fi/comics/etc. It's aggravating because it sends the message that even awesome brainy ladies are still "outside" the geek culture.

LOL @ you thinking this was ever a show about geeky things. It wasn't. It was about "Hahaha, look at how pathetic these nerds are, let's mock them and their patheticness."

(Anonymous) 2013-05-22 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was a show about Nice Guys who are obsessed with getting women way out of their league

No.

I don't like the show either, but from the little I've seen of it, it's clear that at least some of the writers are themselves nerds.

Eh, you can only make so many jokes about the same thing then it goes stale. The guys have mostly grown up and moved on, except Raj, like people do. No one stays a young geek forever, eventually everyone gets into the relationship phase as they get older.

I assume by "relationship phase" you are specifically talking about romantic relationships, which no. There is absolutely no reason why these women couldn't have been introduced as friends. Because when people grow older what they do do is realize that men and women can be friends without any sex or romance or pairing off.

This is exactly why I stopped watching, about two-thirds of the way through the fourth season. Not only was the show becoming more and more about relationship drama; it was also falling into the clichés associated with that genre. For example, Priya was pretty cool when she was introduced and when she and Leonard started dating, but then all of a sudden with NO buildup she became a controlling, bossy, overly jealous harridan. Why? Because the writers "needed" her to be that way so Leonard/Penny could happen again. Bleah.

As for geek culture in the show, that was my other complaint. No, I don't agree with those who say the purpose of the show from day one was to point and laugh at geeks. Rather, in the first three seasons or so, the writers made reference to a surprisingly broad and deep number of geeky interests for a mainstream sitcom. Then--whether because of a changeover in writers or some other reason, I don't know--it became all, "Star Wars! Star Trek! Batman! World of Warcraft!" In other words, the handful of geek pursuits even the most non-nerdy people know about unless they've been living in a cave.

I think it would be better if they tried different pairings.

I mean, ever since that one episode with the wedding date, I really like Leonard and Amy together.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-22 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I've thought for awhile now they should put Amy with Raj (or Stuart) and bring on an asexual girl for Sheldon (if they insist on giving him a gf). It just makes more sense to me.

Eh it wasn't really about geek stuff in the first place so much as making fun of geeks.

I always figured "Big Bang Theory" was a pun on banging being slang for sex.

I agree with you completely, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately this happens far too often. One of the quickest ways to make me lose interest in a show is to put too much emphasis on romantic and/or sexual relationships.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
I love the first two seasons of this show. The third season has a handful of good episodes. Anything after that? DNW.

I choose to regard the later seasons as some type of re-boot/re-make/spin-off and I ignore them completely.

The good thing is that it's all fictional, so no one part of it is more valid or more "real" than another part. The characterizations and situations from the earlier seasons aren't somehow rendered "incorrect" or "not real" just because changes were made later on.

I suppose people might laugh at me for this, but this is where the concept of "headcanon" is actually useful. Just take what you like and disregard the rest, it will give you peace of mind.

I'm not even a hardcore fan, but I'm bitterly disappointed at the direction this show took, and I really feel what you're saying in this secret.

Nothing can take the first two seasons away from you, just be glad for that. Also, nothing can stop you from writing fanfic that sticks with the original portrayal of the characters, from the early seasons. That's what I do.

Anyways, I guess I'm rambling, but I just wanted to say that I feel you and that I, for one, choose to enjoy this fandom while ignoring the later seasons and sticking with old-school, vintage BBT.

/cool story, sis.
