[Moriarty/Sherlock Holmes]

Does that outfit make sense in canon?

Well, in the sense that megalomania makes sense...

Yeah. He broke into an exhibit and posed with the crown jewels to show off.

Gyah, yes. And people try to justify it with, "Well all of Sherlock is over the top!". But there's a difference between "over the top" and "completely fucking ridiculous".

I sort of enjoy the cheesyness at some points.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-06 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, that one is Moriarty's only scene that didn't make me cringe.

You definitely are not alone in this, OP. I personally like him, but I can see why some people find him annoying and obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-06 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He is the worst actor I have ever seen in a professional medium. How he continues to work is beyond me.

I have such an "Emperor's New Clothes" issue with him. He gets heaped with praise and I'm trying to figure out what everyone is seeing that I'm not.

The general OTTness and air of grandiosity the show affords him is actually what started putting me of SHerlock, because his character and the writing definitely don't warrant it and can't pull it off. Not his fault as an actor - I actually think he's done pretty amazingly with what he's been given. I just think he was miscast (even though I see what they were going for with him) and miswritten.

And really, it's not because I can't handle a bit of cheesiness in my television. I love cheesiness and OTTness actually - I actually thoroughly enjoyed all of RTD's Doctor Who finales, for instance. It's the cold, kind of mean tone of the rest of Sherlock which makes the whole thing not gel properly.

Him winning the BAFTA for this makes me wonder about that belief that British/Irish actors are so much better than American actors at acting.

He was so hammy it was dreadful.

It is that weird voice he puts on that puts me off. Why did the actor go for something so fucked up and stupid sounding, not to mention so gay?

I'm sorry, I kind of really love the fact that he won the Bafta - obvs it made all the Benny fangirls insane with a rage that continues to this day.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, he won a bafta for his Moriarty performance? The guy didn't act anything like a criminal mastermind that Moriarty's supposed to be! To me he was like a evil version of Matt Smith's Doctor- special-snowflake who suddenly has crazy ideas that manage to work out somehow.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I like him in the same way I like the 11th Doctor. They are silly, Moffat written weirdos. I don't love either of them and yeah they are over the top, but then again I have only ever seen any of the episodes one time.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
More Andrew Scott for me! :)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. The 'have you seen me in a crown' line gave me such second-hand embarrassment.

[Picture of Moriarty from BBC Sherlock sitting on a throne wearing the crown jewels.]

I find most of his scenes so embarassingly silly that I have to fast forward through them

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
They are ridiculously silly. I don't fast-forward, but I groan like crazy when he's onscreen. Why does everyone love him so much?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
the way he reminds me so much of Graham Norton (whom I actually like) is off-putting. takes me out of the show.

I liked his silliness. It's fun to watch.I'm not overly fond of the "THIS VILLAIN IS UNSTABLE WHAT WILL HE DO NEXT" trope (i'm sure it has a name but I'm too lazy to search) but I really loved his Moriarty. It's been awhile since I've watched Sherlock but he's easily my favorite character.
