LIES AND SCANDAL.

For me, werewolves usually looks so damn awkward, like they're not actually capable of tearing into you because they're made of rubber, hahahaha. |D But it sucks because they're my favorite standard horror monster, aside from zombies. :<

BUT I really like how the Teen Wolf werewolves look so. :\a

I don't know. I love the look of the werewolf in An American Werewolf in London. And it still has the best transformation scene bar none. Though I wish we could have a werewolf that actually looks, you know, somewhat like a wolf rather than an Aye-Aye.

I thought The Vampire Diaries did it pretty well. They CGed the faces of actual wolves, which did look kind of funny, but they didn't overuse the footage of them. The transformations were amazing.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. To me, the werewolves that are like people with slightly wolfy faces are the worst. Like on SPN or Grimm.

But the ones that are like larger wolves that can STAND UP and bave only vaguely human shapes? Like in The Howling or Harry Potter? Are legit terrifying.

I just apply the five stages of transformation from Werewolf: The Apocalypse to them. That way I just think "oh, he's in Glabro" when the werewolf looks almost human, or "Yay, Crinos" when he's the awesome human/wolf monster. And so on.

I don't mind the Teen Wolf werewolves (except for the ears, because those always look so freaking plastic it's not even funny).

I love the werewolves in UK's Being Human. I think the transformation is the best I've seen, and they don't look too CGI-ed as a wolf.

I find my problem with unscary werewolves has less to do with what they look like or the forms they can take but the medium in which I consume them by. If they're in movies or TV it's much harder for me to find them scary. I don't think I've come across one yet that has frightened me. But if they're in a book, for example? Well, I think Jim Butcher pulled it off very nicely and I was very frightened of some of his werewolves.

I think the best werewolf horror comes from the perspective of the werewolf and the terrifying lack of control over their body; when they make it about how scared other people should be of the monster, it's never as scary. And of course the closer to human they look the more ridiculous they look IMO.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, the werewolves on Teen Wolf are ridiculous. Probably the worst of any pop-culture portrayal I've ever seen. I wish they'd stick with actual wolves or something, although that might be more difficult logistically.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The Underworld ones (apart from the giant white motherfucker) were tolerable to me.

I haven't started s3 of TW but I am kind of hoping the Alphas are given better game faces.

Awkwardly, there's a scene earlier in the series where Derek is fang-only, and I have never wished a show that wasn't about vampires was actually about vampires. True Blood style ones though.

STOP STICKING EXTRA BROW LUMPIES AND FACE PUBES ON THE PRETTY PEOPLE.
STAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHP.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome the transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London is.

Although I will agree that the werewolves in TW are ridiculous. I like the show, but they look like hairy Romulans.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the biggest problem is the insistence of the "man-wolf"/"wolfman" form - it's really difficult to fuse creatures without it looking awkward or silly half the time.

Which is why I go the "bigger, hungrier wolves" route for werewolves. None of this stupid "humanoid wolf" shit - it's a fucking wolf! It's a large, carnivorous predator! If you're not afraid of one of those in your proximity, something is wrong with your goddamn self-preservation instincts and you deserve to be puppy chow anyway!

tl;dr: I love werewolves and I still agree with this :(

This isn't a movie/TV series, but... I'd really like to rec a book! Thor by Wayne Smith was one of my favorite books growing up, and I still love it to bits. Don't want to say too much about it as you really should go into it unspoiled, but anyone who likes dogs and/or werewolves is bound to like it.

Clearly you have never seen The Howling.

Or that big black nightmare in The Never Ending Story.

Ngl I unashamedly love Van Helsing because of the werewolves.

I don't mind the Dog Soldier ones though, some of the others do look a little unfortunate but I think some of that is to do with when they were made. I don't like the Teen Wolf one at all, but I don't like it when werewolves look human with a few fuzzy bits and sharper teeth.

People will probably laugh at me for this but the scariest werewolf incarnation I have ever seen is Prof. Lupin from the HP movies (and I have seen many werewolf designs in my time).

His spidery appearance will forever haunt me in my sleep!

Alas and goddamn, werewolf Hugh Jackman was everything I want in life, but that movie was such unspeakable shit, I still don't know if it was worth it.

Totally agree with you on the BTVS wolves

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Because LBR, they look like gorillas. But most other werewolves I find palatable enough. I especially like the Teen Wolf half-shifted beta form. (Alpha form looks dumb due to poor CGI, although the point in the second season where Peter stares through a window and then jumps through it in Alpha form freaked me out.)

But I had a severe phobia of werewolves and wolves growing up, and only started being able to handle them the second or third time I saw Lupin as a werewolf in the HP movies. Now I worryingly find the human side of them unbelievably attractive, while still getting sweaty and really nervous any time they take wolf form. Really, if it's a sufficiently creepy/eerie howl? That'll freak me right out.
