I have a bit of a kneejerk response to this, on the same lines as I have a kneejerk response to the idea that celebrities make up being bi/genderqueer/LGBT in general for attention, because while it's possible that they may be making it up, enough people are attacked for faking/lying about those things that this attitude really seems unhelpful. As far as I'm concerned, it's better to give people the benefit of the doubt on that one. It doesn't give them a green card to talk shit that's harmful to other people who've experienced rape, but nor does anything. I just... I feel like you're damaging other people more than you're attacking her when you say stuff like that.

(ETA: Sorry for any lack of clarity. Rereading this, it didn't come out as clear as I thought it had, but I'm not sure how to make it clearer. Gah. I can't words tonight)

Yeah, this is one thing where I always try to give people benefit of the doubt, for this reason and also because, I figure, with the staggering amount of stigma that rape survivors have to endure, chances are very few people would want to lie about it. Maybe that's naive of me but it's better to ensure doing no harm.

Which is not to say that assholes like Palmer don't make it harder though. I also used to think nobody would actually try to fake a suicide for attention...

I think the idea is that there are less likely to be decapitation victims in the thread than there are to be rape victims?

I mean, I'm not saying I agree. Personally, I'm uncomfortable with wishing death or harm to anyone real (fictional characters I wish harm on all the time, that's why I'm a writer), particularly as I'm very aware that no man is an island and something like what anon is advocating would do a lot of damage to a lot of innocent people associated with her, but I can see where there's a degree of difference between rape and murder in this case. Rape is, after all, more common and leaves more immediate scars for the victim. More common trigger, basically.
