How do you stay fit?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Wondering because I can't seem to get this chub away :( I'm one of the callcentre anons so I can't really exercise while at work. I'm getting home after dark (winter here) and I'm really reluctant to go for a walk then. I take the stairs to leave the building though

I've been - yoga three times a week...with the wii fit as I'm awfully self conscious and it doesn't cost money
- I have two 2kg barbells I try to lift every night, increasing the amount. But as I said self conscious so I try to do it when housemate's are not around
...got a pole thing I can put on the door and lift myself. Try to do it a couple of times a day.

I don't

I run the track at the local high school every morning. it's 100% free and it feels great having your workout done first thing in the morning. if there's no track near you, you could maybe just run the streets around where you live?

if regular exercise isn't plausible though, you might want to consider just keeping a very healthy diet. this gets very expensive of course, but in conjunction with taking the stairs at your building, parking far away from wherever you're going if you drive, tapping your feet while at work, and just doing everything you can fit in, you may start to see some results.

good luck, anon!

There's a bike track if that's what you mean? It's poorly made, but I take walks on it when I can.

I wouldn't mind exercising regularily and it's much easier in summer because I really don't want to run around in the dark (i'm prone to leg injuries and would hate for it to happen where no-one can find/see me).

I use public transport, but maybe I should up the healthiness of my diet. More...something, I'm sure it can be improved XD

Google says 2kg is 4.4 lbs. Yeah, no, that's useless and won't do you any good. Those are basically paperweights unless you're extremely weak for some reason and then you should see a doctor. WiiFit is okay to start with, but you'll more intense exercise as you get more fit.

You might want to try: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/12/09/beginner-body-weight-workout-burn-fat-build-muscle/

This guy also has a fabulous book on bodybuilding--I read the unisex one, not the women one so far (I plan to to see if he makes it diff for women when he didn't in the unisex book). http://marklauren.com/ I found his book really demystified bodybuilding for me (explained the terms, how to eat, etc. in an easily understood way).

He also has an app that shows the exercise and i, iirc, around $3.00.

Also search on YT for fitness vids--it's fabulous for that (yoga, cardio, bodybuilding, etc.)--has entire programs just for YT and also uploaded fitness dvds (may get pulled for copyright though).
I do understand about being self-conscious while exercising. My mom used to criticize me for not lifting my arm as high as the instructor's on the dvd (this 35 minutes into a 35 min. dvd.).

Check out fitness dvds from your local library also.

Also, spot reducing, etc. is a load of shit--it doesn't work and it's a myth. Calories expended must exceed calories in or you won't lose weight.

You might want to try joining myfitnesspal.com It's free, you can track what you eat, calories, fat grams, etc. And the forums are helpful and nice ime.

I've got more 2kg disks so I can up it to 4kg a side? But that's all I have, they're a left over from the previous renter.

Thanks for the link! I'll have to check out his women one, then the other one just for fun.

It's just, yeah I don't want people hanging around making comments while I'm exercising or whatever :C My housemate is this uber fit person (she runs marathons) so I just end up feeling really self conscious and awkward.

I forget her until now: http://www.stumptuous.com/ It's an encouraging bodybuilding blog by a woman who weight lifts herself. I love it. She also has bodyweight exercises on her blog.

Yeah, people watching me exercise is a dnw, strong no for me. I can't deal with it well. I'm already doing this, which the person watching me isn't yet they're criticizing me (and, also, usually overweight themselves, so really no leg to stand on (yup, mom is and was overweight when she criticized me and hadn't exercised in many years). It's also why I don't do sports.

Good luck in your quest, OP!

Look, you are dealing with physical therapy weights here. So unless you had an accident and are recovering, Those weights aren't doing shit for building muscle.

You need to spend some money and either go to a place where you can have acces to weights, or buy some more plates.

If you can do more then 2 sets of 15 reps without any effort (by effort, I mean before you are done with the second set, you have a point where you cannot complete the lift) you are not challenging yourself enough. If you can't finish the first set, there's too much weight for you at this point.

When you can't finish that 2nd set... you rest and then you finish what's left. Even if you have to stop 4 or 5 times.

Are they okay if I'm not really after building muscles just... upping what I do have and losing some weight. Although yeah building up muscles are also cool ( i forgot to mention i'm a girl, not that that is hugely relevant)

maybe i can get a month pass somewhere and see how i feel about the gyms. (urgh wish they had private rooms where I could hide away!)

I can do a first set (of 20) fine, but the second set yeah I need a break and come back to it later down the track.

I can do this! *determined*

Also hey just realised winter = maybe sales on for those those...kinda like a barbell kit but in different sizes? Last time I checked they were like $200 (and I don't have a car so I think all around the set weighed 50kg and the place is quite a distance from my house D: Take a trolly this time)

Boy, girl, doesn't matter. More muscle on your body, more weight loss, period. Muscle takes a lot more calories to maintain then fat. which means being a bit more fit means you burn a lot more calories even when you aren't working out.

You ain't gonna build until you have some actual strain. I'm sorry but I have trouble believing that 2 kg's is so much weight for you taht your second set in you can't lift your arms anymore. Burn perhaps, but not lift at all? Unless you are really out of shape that seems like you'd have trouble, say, carrying groceries. Exactly what exercises are you doing with them? Go get some 5 kg's for starters, and go from there. I have no idea how the weight system works in kg's, but I gotta imagine they make 5 or 6 kg weights, right?

Here's one thing to remember though... nobody gives a shit int he gym. Most people are too busy doing their own thing to look to hard at you unless you are failing spectacularly. Obviously that won't fix your paranoia, but ti's still true.

I run a few times a week and just try to eat small amounts of food all throughout the day rather than huge meals. I take trail mix to work so I can snack on it in my cubicle when I do get hunger pangs. (I also work in a call center)

Urgh, it's a job but I hate sitting there for hours on end. The desks are so low I can't even stand :/ I worry what it's doing to my back as well, thanks to cheap ass chairs.

On the plus side, I'm the 12th floor so that's a lot of stairs I can go down/up on my lunch break when I'm going stir crazy X_X

Whatever you do, keep at it! Don't stop. Make a schedule and stick to it. That's what keeps holding me up; there's always something more important to do. Make this a high priority.

Yoga might not be the best idea for weight loss--it's great for you, but you might not be burning many calories. I suggest working in some kind of aerobics. I know there are aerobics programs out for the Wii, and they've been out long enough that they're probably inexpensive to buy used.

Also--I get bored. Really bored. Usually the only way I can stick to aerobics is by distracting my mind. I used to take an mp3 player to the gym and listen to NPR while I used the elliptical or treadmill. You might want to see if you can figure out an aerobics circuit you can do while listening to/watching something you like.

aww thanks!

I got a bunch of wii exercise games from a garage sale last year (and a few other random games, yay garage sales), one of those should have aerobics! :D I just use the basic wii fit one all the time because...it's already in the wii...

That might be an idea, some kind of background noise. I was mostly doing the yoga because it's kinda fun and I could probably use the flexibility XD

Thanks for the encouragement :D

It's not a bad idea to do this before really getting into more intense exercise like running or something. It lets you get your muscles limber so hopefully you won't injure yourself as easily as if you'd just jumped straight into running or whatever.

People seem to like the Zombie Run app, which also includes a walking to running app.

I don't have the money, but I really like Dashama (she's on YT also) and I plan on buying this eventually after I do get some money: https://www.udemy.com/30dyc-transformational-30-day-yoga-challenge/?couponCode=icontact

If you do try it out, let me know the results, I'd be very interested. :)

+1 on the distractions

TV, youtube videos, cool music, anything that helps time fly by faster is A+ for motivating yourself through a routine

Start jogging. Cut out soda if you didn't yet.

I'm good, I don't like soda much D: Makes my teeth fill fuzzy. Less sugar in the coffee maybe.

Re: How do you stay fit?

thanks for everyone's encouragement! I'll try to do everything more often and STICK TO A SCHEDULE (well, a loose schedule around my work schedule)

I'm going see if I can't get better weights secondhand/discount somewhere as I hadn't realised they were basically therapy ones
