Inspired by #17

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-06-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What is some change that would make you quit your TV Show/Movie/Game/Book series?

There will probably be unpopular opinions in this (starting with mine), no bashing. :<

I would stop watching Supernatural if Castiel was gone permanently. I don't really enjoy the brothers only storyline because they just do the same dumb shit over and over (Keep Secret -> Fight About Secret -> Break Up for an Episode -> Something "Shocking Happens -> Get Back Together After Having a Heart to Heart -> Keep New Secret -> Repeat).

I would say killing off my favourite character, but I think it really depends on how it's done and why. I like watching depressing shit so I do think I have a high tolerance for that.

But mostly it's when a show/movie/book/game looses something, like the storytelling turns awful or the plots just stop making any sense, but that's not so much rage-quitting as getting bored.

I thought I would stop watching spn if they perma-killed Cas but... I just got bored at the beginning of season 8 and haven't been interested in catching up since. I don't like it when my love of something dies that badly. :(

Honestly, for most TV shows it would not bother me if they killed off my favorite character (like Daryl from TWD) as long as there are other characters I care about. I hate character death in fanfiction though. For some weird reason.

Dying would break my heart but if he ever converted, I'm done. Him holding onto his faith while being knee deep in a place full of religious fanatics is one the most intriguing parts of the series. However if Lagertha dies, yes, then I am checking out.

Same. I only started watching for George and I'm a few episodes in, and I'm still only watching for him. I'm finding the series to be a real slog to get through, but... damn George Blagden. As long as he's in it, I can't not watch it.

Yea...me too, probably. Don't get me wrong, I started watching Vikings because I thought the premise looked interesting; I didn't know anything about George back then. But Athelstan quickly became one of my favorite characters and I think he's essential to the show; they need someone with his heart and innocence around to counteract the nature of the Vikings. I worry about him losing his faith or becoming a warrior too, so I hope they don't go too far with that. :(

I am hard to budge. I will ride out all sorts of changes. It usually takes a delayed 'fuck this' effect to make me bail, like when I finally gave up on CSI midseason.

It seems that a favorite character is what keeps most people interested in their stuff. And /highfive about Supernatural. But a sad highfive because it is over an awful event.

For me, I'd check out of Supernatural if Castiel and Dean became a thing and Dean went all domestic and had a steady, healthy relationship with the Angel because that's when I know then that the show took the eight previous seasons and chucked them out the window and pissed on the canon bible. Dean is not meant to have a healthy relationship with anyone or anything. (Not even his own kin.) He's God's punching bag and I like him that way. Same goes with Sam. No girlfriends. No boyfriends. However, one night stands are okay. The Winchesters are cursed. That's the running theme throughout the series. Stick to it.

Nah, I too enjoy them all being miserable and sad. If I want happy endings I'll read fanfiction.

What usually gets me to dump a show is boredom rather than change (I've been a fan of Doctor Who and Batman too long to get worked up about things being ~different~). If it starts to feel like a chore to remember to watch a show, it's time to quit. I'm trying to come up with an exception, but I honestly can't think of a show I gave up on because of a change. I guess if I watched something for a particular character/pairing/ensemble and they were written off, I wouldn't be tuning in.

tbh I might start watching SPN more closely if Castiel was perma-killed. I kind of liked s7 and all the conflict Dean and Sam went over Castiel's and Bobby's death (although the scene where they show how numbed by pain Dean and Sam were over Bobby was kind of pathetic). I think after s8 the way they react could be different and have different impacts especially after all that time Dean spent in Purgatory with him.

Oh, well, idk. I don't even watch SPN these days very much.

There are a couple of things that would do that.

First, if I'm watching only for the sake of a single character/plotline and the character is killed off/the plot is finished, I'm not going to bother anymore.

Second, if the hero is written as an irredeemable dickhole who doesn't get any repercussions from their stupid actions and I'm supposed to think that they are likable and to root for them, I'm dropping it like a hot potato.

Third, and this is just something I personally dislike: suddenly appearing family members. This person has never been mentioned before even if the show has run for years and now they are a major part of everyone's life. Double the loathing, if they have been supposed dead or are a child coming from the future.

-Love triangles that are really forced to the point where I want to shout, "GEEZ WE ALL KNOW CHARACTER A IS GOING TO END UP WITH CHARACTER B JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT HOW CHARACTER C IS GOING TO RUIN IT ALL WHEN WE KNOW THEY WON'T! GET BACK TO CHARACTER A'S CRISIS AT WORK!" I especially get angry if it seems to be one of the main plots to the story.
-If Holmes/Watson becomes canon on "Elementary".
-If Linden and Holder's relationship becomes romantic on ANY level on "The Killing".
-If I find myself not wanting to keep up at all anymore. Happened to me with the second season of "Revenge". I liked the first season, but then after three episodes I just felt like I didn't care what happened to any of the characters, so I stopped watching. And, yeah, I'm like the only person who liked Declan, so I know I'm not returning to that show, even if it gets good in season three.

Retcon-ing season 4 of Community. Or any season of Community. That would make me seriously consider quitting because I don't watch a season of tv just to be told it was all a lie and "this is how it really went."

If Troy and Abed were gone, especially if just one of them left leaving a sole Troy or a sole Abed to be on the show I would probs call it quits. It would just be too sad.

I quit...

- when the "will they or won't they" eats the show, the character development or the natural interpersonal dynamic of a couple who are fallin in love (happened with Castle and Bones and House) (don't want it to happen with Elementary or the Killing);

- when I stumble on a really-really-really distastrous episode that's supposed to be important, and story-arch-defining, but (at least for me) instead it's just sinks my main ship under three seconds, uses the stupidest clichés it can in the given situation and brings back characters I hate (happened with NCIS:LA) (don't want it to happen with Revenge);

- when my procedural crime show starts to revolving around longer story-arch I don't (and don't want to) care about, (happened with NCIS);
- or when a show's focus changes drastically (happened with Supernatural a long ago);

- when something happens that touches my personal sore points, and it seems it will become an important plot point later (meaning it won't disappear on a whim), and it makes the show hard to watch... not a triggering effect, not even close, it's just I end up staring at the DVD-case realizing that I'm not watching... again (I think it's happening now with the Killing).

I hate couples breaking up at the altar. If you don't want them married you have plenty of time to break them up before the wedding.
