That is the most not!fandom secret that I have ever seen on F!S and I've been here for years. C'mon, OP, what were you thinking?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-06-23 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, maybe they don't have another place. It isn't so bad so long as they don't get out of hand. It's not like we don't have a regular nonfandom secret thread in the general.

OP

You're right. I didn't have another place for it and just wanted to get it off my chest.

There've been a lot of really not fandom-y secrets recently. This one, the one about makeup, the one whining about natural deaths... did they miss the "fandom" part of Fandom Secrets?

OP, what profession are you in? And where are you? I'm wondering if this is a regional thing. I'm in the northeast US and I've never heard of this. People might frown on really loud nail polish, but not nail polish in general. Even the military allows nail polish as long as it's a neutral color.

OP

I'm in academia - not an acafan though. I teach at one of the top ranked schools in my country and my work is closely connected to current policy.

Oh geez, acafan. I just had to look that up.

That's really odd. I'm in academia too (just ABD in history, though; TAing isn't being a real instructor) and I haven't noticed that at all. I can't go into where I go, but I'm in a pretty policy-heavy section of the university (no, I'm not sure why they put our department there). The problem might be really out there nail polish--green instead of pink, for example.

Are you sure people would really frown on it, though? You might be able to get away with it as long as you don't mind frequently removing one kind of nail polish and putting another on depending on the situation; wearing the fun nail polish to teach, but wearing something more conservative to conventions or faculty meetings.

Aside, and this isn't a dig, but: this is one reason top ranked schools suck. They can't forget that they're top ranked schools. : /

That's just about the last job sector I expected to hear, OP. I teach in one of the officially 'elite' universities in my country and outlandish fashion choices - or simply a basic inability to dress oneself - is so endemic that the smart business types are the ones who stand out. At least in the humanities.

...Now I'm curious because it's just nail polish. Don't get me wrong, I love the stuff...but who would take nail polish that seriously?

Re: N!F

[personal profile] making_excuses 2013-06-23 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, nail polish would not go against you in Norway, then again our Lawyers barely use suits so we have a lax dresse-code allround. Not even our Prime Minister has a suit on all the time, he does dress more smartly than most in Norway though.

My professors all dress quite casually which includes tshirts with films and stuff on then*, minus one (the youngest) whom wears suits...

*They are film professors so they might be excused, I did have a philosophy prof once who whore metal T-shirts though (and that was at the top ranked university in Norway, I am now at the top ranked Higher Education Institution for Film and Television in Norway)

I realize now that the last part might make me sound pretentious? I am not, we have a fair system for applying to School, everyone apply through the same system, and we are known by a number not our name so the best grades get in. And our tuition is not over 200$ a semester no matter what you study.

You don't sound pretentious. It sounds like a great system. I wish we had it in my country!

Didn't sound pretentious to me, but then again, I'm used to a similar system ;)

Disneyland, for one. The idea of a "clean-cut appearance" gets taken pretty seriously. Anything beyond what they consider a "neutral color" like pink, forget it. No sparkles, no flowers, no nothing. Makes me sad. I have so many pretty colors I can't use anymore.

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-06-24 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Gah, that's so silly. D:

Idk why nail polish would be considered something other than clean cut! If anything it's stylish and can make one look even more put together.

Are you a Princess? (lol this question.) Again, as long as the color matched the dress I don't see why it wouldn't be okay. Sad.

Seriously... it's not like it's mini skirts or ripped jeans or fishnet stockings or something that would be glaringly 'unprofessional'.

I mean, I can't wear makeup or nail polish at work if I'm going to be in the sterile room, but that's a contamination thing, not a professional thing.

Jared's selfies are rarely not cringe-worthy. He needs to take lessons off of Shannon.

[Picture is a big collection of nail polish bottles of various colors, lined up in several rows.]

In my profession nail polish is unusual. It's a sign of being immature or low class. I still wish I could wear it. It shouldn't be seen this way. I wish my profession wasn't so conservative.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
A part of me wants to say that, well, the way to stop such as ridiculous trend is to start wearing your nails painted and rock the hell out of them, but the other part really doesn't blame you for not wanting to jeopardize your job.

I'm sorry, OP, that really does suck. :(
