Excuse me, but I think you might have a teeny bit of a vast fundamental misunderstanding of what a family is.

See, families consist of parents, children, and siblings. By definition, biological families are not chosen. Families are not groups of unattached, self-sufficient, independent, fully-developed individuals who choose to live together. They don't hang out together because they've made a rational decision in their best interests to do so. The entire definition of what separates families from non-families is that families don't choose each other and that kids are kind of dependent on their parents. You are aware of this, I assume?

Oh my, I was not aware of that. I assumed that families are formed by a state sanctioned lottery and consist of two adults and a goldfish.

Underage children may not have a choice, but spouses, who have chosen each other, can take a divorce and grown children can cut all contact with their relatives, if they want to. All the dysfunctional families that I've known in real life have broken up sooner or later, so yes, at some point you can choose your family.

Well, you mentioned "Married with Children", so I assumed you were talking about families that had actual kids. Sorry if that's not what you were referring to, but your comment sure sounded like it.

Yeah sorry, that comment does sound douchey.

Yes, and they're all held together by gunpoint and no one is allowed to break away when they have the ability to do so. Divorces are illegal, you're not allowed to disown anyone, and people can't move across the country and break all contact.

I think YOU vastly misunderstand that while you don't choose your family, you can still certainly choose not to stick around.

Sorry, I assumed the anon was referring to families with non-grown kids that aren't quite to the dysfunction level of abandonment.

Even then, non-grown kids have options. Kids can runaway, go to a boarding school, go live with another family member, demand legal independence, and so forth. The OP was annoyed that people in shows NEVER look into alternate options and just suffer staying with their families.

I suppose that makes sense. I was just angry at the OP for dismissing the idea of putting up with a difficult family life when those things aren't options at all for a lot of people and most fictional depictions don't portray conditions as being that extreme.

However, I don't see anything in the OP's comment saying "why doesn't anyone ever try to get out rather than putting up with them?" I only see "these people should all obviously try to magically escape their families because they don't get along". So while my comment was overly rude and I'm sorry for that, I don't see what part of the OP's comment was supposed to imply the former rather than the latter.
