Kind of a weird question

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
But has anyone here had breast reduction surgery? Or a mastectomy?

I've always hated having breasts. In general I just don't like having them, but then mine are also largely different sizes so that just adds to my awkward dislike. I guess I wouldn't mind an A cup or something very small but I'd prefer a flat chest. Whenever I see pictures of men in tight shirts or tank tops or whatever I get this burning jealousy. I just..hate everything about having breasts. I'm thinking maybe reduction is an option I should seriously consider. I'd have to save up for it and it wouldn't be for a bit yet, but I'm almost thirty and I really don't think this feeling is going away. In fact it only seems to get *more* the older I get. I'm really tired of hating and hiding my chest.

I don't know what I'm asking - I guess for experiences? Advice? Has anyone gone through something similar?

My sister got breast-reduction surgery. Obviously, it was uncomfortable afterward (and she is a huge, huge baby, so it's hard for me to say how painful it really was). But, she's very happy with being smaller, has a lot less issues with back pain and shoulder pain, doesn't have grooves in her shoulders from her bras anymore, etc.

She hasn't had any residual pain or anything, either, just her scars a little tender. I say go for it - i'm only at a B cup, but i'd go smaller if i could. I hate bras.

I have to ask, why do you wear them? I'm something like a C cup and I only wear bras for job interviews - I just decided I was done with them like 10 years ago.

Butting in, but this smaller-breasted woman wears bras most of the time, including at home, because I feel more comfortable with them, with my breasts supported and kept more in place. I do go without in Summer, but only if I'm wearing a more structured top, or a very fit (tight? ESL, sorry) one. I even have some very soft, comfortable bras just to wear at home.

I was asking because [personal profile] tabaqui specifically said she hated them, not because of her breast size.

This is mostly unrelated, but yes, the word you were looking for was tight.

Well, i only wear them when i have to, like when something looks weird without a bra or exercising. Otherwise, i don't. Stupid things.

Right - I've kind of shaped my wardrobe/dress habits around never wearing them, I guess. I just stick to camisoles or sports tops except for super-formal life moments.

Breast volume varies with both cup size and band size, so whether one's boobs are small enough to go braless comfortably is not purely a function of cup size. I'm a 32DD and frequently don't bother with a bra, but a woman who is a 40C would actually have larger breasts than I do and might not want to go without a bra. Also, breasts come in different shapes and densities and some women simply don't like the shape their breasts take under a shirt if they don't wear a bra, regardless of their bust size. My only concern is flashing my nipples at everyone, which is a problem in the summer when I'm more likely to want to go braless but also wearing thinner clothes that do nothing to conceal hard nipples.

I was replying to someone who specifically said they hated bras. As most women wear bras whether they hate them or not, I have been made aware of all the reasons why people of all shapes and sizes wear bras. I know that my body shape in most clothing would be "better" if I wore a bra (not least as most clothing is expressly designed that way), just as my face would look "better" if I put makeup on and my legs would look "better" if I wore high heels, but 99% of days none of those things are worth my time and discomfort, even at work. Tbph these days I think my boobs look weird if I'm wearing a bra.

And yeah, summer is slightly more annoying than winter, but fortunately I've always worked in places with air conditioning and outside of work and other formal occasions, does it really matter? You see male nipples in summer all the time.

I'm a small size and I wear bras a lot for two reasons. I'm forty-something and even as small as my boobies are they're not as perky as they once were - if I'm wearing a bra, I don't get the under-boobie sweat :D

And I like light-colored clothing and don't need people staring at my dark nipples showing through my clothes.

fwiw it's now thought that bras promote sagging, though I'm sure time catches up with all of us eventually. In any case, a shelf cami solves either of those two issues and many people find them more comfortable than bras. There's just this cultural entrenchment when it comes to bras - insofar as they have functions that matter to some people in some situations, there are other means of achieving those same ends, but there's a resistance to exploring those other options because bras.

The women I've met who have had one all had similar reasons as you--hated their breasts, hated the attention, hated their proportions, etc--and they never regretted it. People (who usually don't have big boobs) act like breast reduction is a huge loss to society but it really isn't, and it's a simple surgery. Since it's a surgery that mostly involves removing fat and then a little nip and tuck, it doesn't have a huge recovery time and it's not very dangerous.

Common complaint is a lack of sensation in that area, though, so expect that. Also, I think there are breast feeding problems, if that's a concern of yours or may be in the future.

My mother had it done in her late-50s and her only regret was that she didn't do it when she was my age (I'm 29).

If you have any kind of back pain/posture issues, you MIGHT be able to get insurance coverage for it (or, if the place you live has a public system, get it covered under that system.) Best of luck, however you go about it.

I'm FTM and have had a double mastectomy.

The positive: I had little post-surgical pain, mainly really stiff and achy for a couple of weeks. It saved me from years-long and deep psychological distress. I look normal with a shirt on, and I'm generally happy with it.

The negative: The scarring is obvious; I have underarm breast tissue left over, so I basically have weird fat rolls that won't go away. One of my nipples healed badly and looks different than the other. I have lost or disrupted sensation in both nipples and in large parts of my chest skin.

To sum up: I'm glad I had it done. The unsatisfying cosmetic results and lost sensation are immaterial compared to the positive psychological and physical results.
