Might be.
But just because a token character is a token doesn't mean they can't be well-written or undergo great character development, imho.

They definitely are, let's be real. But I like Emmy a lot; she makes me laugh and I admire her confidence. She was actually the first major Professor Layton character I didn't actively dislike.

Flora sucks, though. I feel bad for saying that because it's not her fault she's a terrible, nonsensical character, but hey.

[Picture is Flora Reinhold and Emmy Altava from the "Professor Layton" videogames. Flora has long brown hair pulled into a ponytail, pale skin, and an orange dress over a long-sleeved white blouse. She has a red bow tied on her hair, and another one around her waist. She is wearing green-brown knee-height boots. Emmy has long wavy dark hair, lightly tanned pale skin and is wearing a white blouse with a coral pink bow on the collar, a yellow dress coat over it with a thin light brown leather belt around the waist, white thighs and green-gray boots. Flora is holding her hands against her chest and smiling sweetly, while Emmy is holding up her index finger as if to say something, with her other hand resting against her hip. She is smiling softly but confidently.]

Much as I like these characters, I get the feeling that they're nothing more than the token chick in the games.

At least they're not as bad as Layton's love interest...

I used to dislike Flora but she's my homegirl now.

Just curious, why do you dislike Claire?

(Love the username, btw xD)

I never said I dislike Claire, but she definitely felt more like a plot device rather than, y'know, a character that isn't there to bring depth to a certain male protagonist other characters

not only that but her sudden appearance in the series was kinda an asspull because of how significant she was to Layton the story, yet she was never mentioned before the Unwound Future. It just left a bad taste in my mouth; I don't dislike her but I dislike the concept behind her character. I really think the writers could have done better.

(and thank you <3)

Ah, I see--I apologize for assuming so! I personally don't mind Claire (though besides finding her quite adorable and somewhat interesting/amusing, she's hardly a favorite), and Unwound Future is definitely my favorite of the three PL games I've played, but I can definitely see what you mean about her existing mainly to develop Layton xD the rest of the cast. I feel like what we know of her is filtered so much through the lenses of men--Layton, Don Paolo, and Dimitri, all three of whom had feelings for her--that we don't really see her being, well, an awesome person in her own right, at least not until the very end.

Also, I can usually suspend my disbelief enough when characters with little to no foreshadowing are introduced having a crucial tie to an already existing character, but I agree that it's not particularly good writing in general. There was the matter of Layton's hat and Don Paolo's seemingly unfounded vendetta with him, but those didn't really need to be explained. And the writers still probably could have exhibited that sort of emotional capacity depth our professor in a different, more consistent way.

I will admit, though, that I prefer Layton not explicitly thinking of Claire in the first two games, since it shows, however retroactively, that although he loved/loves her and was saddened by her death/hasn't fully moved on, he's still able to act the part of the perfect gentleman (at least until, y'know, she dies again). c:

(and I will leave my cravat on~)

Whoops, forgot to log-in. This is me, if it's not already evident. xD

I agree. Emmy is an improvement, but the scene where Flora gets "kidnapped" in Lost Future while everyone else just STANDS AROUND will always stick out in my mind.

I've only played the first trilogy (or rather, the second one chronologically), so I can't say anything about Emmy, but I've never really felt this way about Flora? I don't think she's an well-developed character, but I think she has a purpose beyond appealing more to females, even if that purpose is to be the daughter of some dude who--spoilers for the first game--made machine replicas of an entire village, or to get kidnapped by Don Paolo/whomever.

I feel bad for Flora. After the first game, I felt like the writers really wanted to do more with her, but just could not figure out a good way. I mean, they tried to get her to solve puzzles as well, but I just felt she was never truly as defined as the other cast members and was kind of just...there. The second game was especially problematic with this one because she tags along with Layton and Luke, only to get stuck behind fairly early on.

Emmy on the other hand I love. She's got a vivid personality and kickass martial arts without overdoing or outshining other characters. She's just as likely to mess up as she is likely to contribute and I really enjoyed her in both "Last Specter" and "Miracle Mask." I thought she was a pretty well-defined character.
