Radio Shows

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have some suggestions for horror or comedy radio shows. Something like Cabin Pressure (which I love). would prefer more modern ones (but will take really good older ones). I can't seem to find anything googling (maybe I am using the wrong search terms).

Well there is always The Navy Lark. Old BBC radio comedy about a bunch of incompetent Navy officers, and Doctor WHo.

Well...If you don't mind listening to a classic, there's always The Shadow

The BBC does plenty of both, if you can access them. For comedy there's panel shows like The News Quiz, Just A Minute and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. A new sketch show called The Show What You Wrote has been good so far, too. For horror, there's series like The Man in Black and Price of Fear, as well as regular adaptations of classic horror stories (they recently had a good H.P. Lovecraft one, and before that it was Carmilla).

If you're into horror I hope you've checked out Quiet, Please, even if it's old. It's not terrifying, but sometimes very haunting.
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is also available as a radio drama (check out the book & the game too if you haven't already).
And ofc, you can't go wrong with H.P. Lovecraft.

And, well, there's always The Boosh (2001) by the Mighty Boosh (comedy), but if you want newer ones (both comedy):
Bleak Expectations
John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme

The Thing on the Fourble Board is considered the best episode, so maybe start with that one and see if you like it.

some of my personal faves (some of them are pretty hilarious/absurd):
Inquest
Dark Gray Magic
Calling All Souls
The Pathetic Fallacy ("A computer gives wrong answers when it feels upset.")
Northern Lights ("Caterpillars and the aurora team up to conquer the world.")
Little Visitor
Baker's Dozen
Let the Lilies Consider
Anonymous
Good Ghost
Shadow of the Wings

you can see more episode summaries here

The Mighty Boosh radio show! It's still good even if you've seen the TV show because it has different plots and characters. I used to listen to it at work and burst into embarrassing fits of unexplainable laughter 'round my co-workers.

If you're looking for fiction, have you tried Night Vale? I haven't listened to it yet, but people are raving about it.

To expand a little bit on Welcome to Night Vale, it's set up as being the town news of a small desert city called Night Vale. Narrator Cecil reads the news in an even, NPR-style voice.

The news is just the regular goings on of the town. A new dog park is being built (no dogs are allowed in the dog park. Looking at the dog park is prohibited), an underground city is discovered under a pin retrieval area in the bowling alley (and the owner of said alley begins preparing for the inevitable war), a glow cloud rolls into town and begins raising dead animals...

But more importantly, a new scientist has arrived in town, and he has perfect hair.

It's not so much horror as unsettling/creepy, but it's also charming.

The CBS Radio Mystery Theater is from the late 70s-early 80s. Most of the whole series (around 4000 episodes) is available on ebay for relatively little cost. Funnily enough, the episodes are pretty good quality, all caught by amateurs on cassette tape, and most include news reports/commercials of the day. The stories are hosted by E.G.Marshall and include a mix of genres although definitely focused on mystery/horror.

I listened to it growing up and I love it for the little time capsules the episodes are.
