There was NOTHING wrong with him raising them by himself. The girls just wanted a mom. some kids REALLY want a set of parents.

Same. As well as the romance feeling totally nonexistent.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely a case of mileage varying. I felt it was very genuine.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still trying to figure out how they GOT a romance out of all the bodily injury Lucy visited upon Gru (accidental, sure) every time they had any screen time together.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't really get that impression. the kids obviously loved gru and it seemed like the two older children (I forget their names) didn't really have much of a problem being raised by a single father (not outwardly anyway). but, yeah, I can't really blame Agnes for wanting a mom. You gotta remember that she did have a mom at one point in her life and she died tragically along with her father. It makes sense that she would miss having a mother.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
J/w where did we learn about Agne's parents?

I think that the party scene in the very beginning was there specifically to show us that they didn't need a mom. Gru makes a fine fairy princess all on his own. The only time it looks like they're missing anything is Agnes' speech for the Mother's Day pageant, which was never displayed as a big issue. Her perfect performance at the end is not so much to show that something had been lacking, but merely that something had been gained.

Are you me?

I have yet to see the movie because of this very reason. Not that there's anything wrong with Gru having a love interest. It just wasn't necessary and I like the single parent aspect of the first movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it might be a good idea to see it and take your own conclusions about the movie.

spoilers for Despicable Me 2

Spoilers for Despicable Me 2

[Picture is Lucy Wilde and Felonious Gru from the CGI animated film "Despicable Me 2" (and their three adopted daughters? The text blocks them) wearing wedding attires. Lucy has pale skin and long red hair pulled up and is wearing a sleeveless white wedding dress and a white veil hangs back from her head. Gru is a bald man with light skin and is wearing a black tuxedo. The two of them are pressing their cheeks together. They're standing outdoors.]

As a fan of the first film, I was bothered by the sequel's implications that there was something wrong with Gru raising the kids by himself as a single father or that there 'needed' to be a mother in the family.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I was worried about this too but it's actually kind of downplayed. The only one of the girls who really wants a mum is Agnes. But to be fair I think that school of hers is fucked up for making her do a speech at a Mother's Day pageant when she doesn't have a mum. If she was doing one in memory of her late real mum that would be different but it didn't come off like that.

The only thing that kind of annoyed me is that they just accept Gru's new wife as 'their new mum' without showing us any scene of Lucy getting to know the girls. I guess we can assume it happened during the time skip but to have seen something would have been nice - especially seeing as the first film was all about the girls getting to know this strange new father figure in their lives.

lol this. I was wondering about that in the theater.

And I agree that I wish there had been some scenes of Lucy bonding with the girls. Like you, I'm assuming that it happened during the time skip but it would have been nice to see a little montage or something at least

My little brother was almost 8 when our mother died, and 'how does he mother's day' was something his primary school legit had no idea what to do with for the next few years. I remember one year he brought home a handmade mother's day gift for me because everyone else was making one and that was what they suggested for him to do.

I wasn't pleased by it, but that kid really want a mum and it is a children's story, so happy ending it is :D

I'm still over the roof that a movie actually went with a) showing an adoption and b) keep the option and not ~magically find their parents~

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, I haven't seen either movie, but one of my friends loved the first one and keeps talking about wanting to go see this... but she was raised by a single father and she's kind of sensitive/defensive about it. Now I wonder if I should tell her the ending might bother her without spoiling it.

yeah, I was kind of put off from seeing it. when I saw the trailers, I guessed the movie would be about giving Gru a love interest and the girls a mom and it was so predictable I just hjkhsakjhs. I'll see it when it comes out on DVD.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so mad that he got married. I found Lucy annoying and there just wasn't the development of a family, really, between the girls, Gru, and Lucy. It just felt weird.

I wonder how this would have been played out if it had been a family with a single mother. As a rule, single mothers get way more flack.

In my head, I do agree with you but in my heart I think I'll always believe that kids need a mother. That kind of nurturing...it's hard to replace. At least to me, but I understand a lot of gay couples do just fine.

Funny enough, I don't think the flip is true at all - that kids need a father.

Yup, hypocritical as fuck.

Did you even see the movie?
It was shown that he wasn't popular with girls when he was a kid and therefore he grew bitter and didn't want to date anymore, but he still wanted it deep down.

If anything, it was this typical Hollywood cliché that ugly, male outcasts always end up with the woman of their dreams. Also, that all women want children (how Lucy was totally okay with immediatly adopting three kids because they were oh so precious... yeahhhh)

But I agree that it would have been better without the stupid, obligatory wedding at the end. It would have been perfect if Gru and Lucy just remained good friends or were only casually dating. It would have fit better within the tone of the first movie.
The littlest daughter could have her mother figure and Gru would have still remained a single parent.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-27 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
i'm surprised how many commenters seem to forget that this is a kid's movie. that is why the wedding was there, most kids don't understand casually dating or fwb or women acting like a mum but just being a friend. they don't pay attention to any chemistry between gru and lucy.

I haven't had a chance to see this and have now been spoiled by scrolling too fast woops but I'M REALLY HAPPY BECAUSE I SHIP THESE TWO FROM THE TRAILERS MAN. xD

I have too many opinions on this movie, sorry.

[personal profile] juliamon 2013-07-28 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
This complaint bothers me a lot on the grounds that it's not really any different than the first movie's message that everyone needs to have kids (even if they're adopted). It's really not worth getting bothered about. Every movie is going to offend someone in some way, no matter what they do.

A fan of the first movie will remember that Gru wasn't fond of the girls at first but they grew on him over time, just as he wasn't fond of Lucy at first but she grew on him too without him realizing it. They're just parallel character arcs for him, wherein he learns what it means to love people (familial in the first, romantic in the second).

It's also worth noting that in the first movie, when the girls were told they were being adopted their immediate assumption was that they'd have both a mom and a dad, and they were visibly disappointed when that wasn't the case. Sure, they warmed up to it and they love Gru now, but we know at least Agnes still wished she could have a mom as well. So it still feels appropriate for canon.
