But superhero comics are typically drawn by tons of different artists (and most of them have vastly different art styles). Have you seriously never seen anyone's art that you liked? If yes, what kind of comic art do you like? Perhaps I -- or someone else -- can offer recs.

THIS!

There are a ton of generic superhero comic artists and there are a ton of interesting ones. My personal favorites are Chris Samnee, David Aja, Becky Cloonan and Cliff Chang.

I hate it when they change the artist. Usually I start to read something and I enjoy the art, then comes the next issue and everything has changed and usually for the worse. This is why I prefer manga, it gives me what I want to read without suddenly changing the art every issue.

Yeah, there's definitely an industry 'style' at least when it comes to the big name publishers. There are artists who put their own spin on things but a lot of it still tends to all look very similar. Only big publisher comic out right now I can think of with a distinctly different style is Hawkeye - have you checked that one out? Other than that, you'll probably find more variety if you look into smaller and independent publishers.

I love Hawkeye right now.

I kind of feel the same way, having been raised on Franco-Belgian BD (of which there are styles which I do find ugly as well) and to a lesser extent manga.
I know the rational arguments against that, and I guess that there certainly must be some lovely art styles out there, but I have this sort of blanket wariness anyway.

Have you tried older comics? I've found that the further back you go the less photorealistic the art gets.

Compare this: http://i.imgur.com/adz5MVb.jpg

to this: http://i.imgur.com/EdBQrp7.jpg

Personally, I think the art in the first one is much more appealing.

That is certainly an ugly-ass picture you've used as a sample, but as other commenters are saying, there's a lot of variety out there. If none of it is your speed, though, that's also valid!

Try Hawkeye. It has a really interesting art style, IMO, and is the thing that drew me into being into comics (and I cosplayed Kate! =D)

(BTW this is the most recent run of Hawkeye, starting in 2012)
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

Batwoman Elegy is my favourite *_* Iron Man extremis was also pretty cool

I tend to find comic art hit and miss, sometimes I love it, other times I think it's pretty shit. But with there being so many comics there are also so many artists that do the work, so maybe you'll find a style that you like?

Okay, so this is either A) a troll or B) a kid who got into anime first and (in that eternally charming reverse of folks who say all anime looks the same) believes all Western comics, or even just all superhero comics, look the same.

And also that that look hasn't changed since the late 90's.

In the event that it's not a troll, I give you:

Chris Samnee's Thor: The Mighty Avenger

Samnee is pretty much aces in whatever he does, and he's on Daredevil these days (also did some Rocketeer and a Firefly one-shot), but Thor: The Mighty Avenger is just a hug on each page, with absolute perfect colors to boot. It's a charming book in every possible way, and while Thor does look grumpy occasionally, well...okay, I can't find that grumpy-phone-Thor, so I'll have to settle for grumpy Foggy instead:

Nevermind a host of other great artists on superhero books, like J.H. Williams III on Batwoman (Elegy is one of the most gorgeous books I own), David Aja on Hawkeye, Jamie McKelvie on Young Avengers, just about anyone who's touched the Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-man book.

Or, y'know, you could sit there and feel superior. That's a thing too.

(There's a Superior Spider-man, if you like.)

Definitely try Hawkeye. But also try Captain Marvel. So far, there have been three (four, if you count the artist on the Enemy Within crossover) different artists on the book, and none of them are "traditional" style.

I happen to love Dexter Soy (most of issues 1-8) and am coming around on Andrade (9-12). Emma Rios, who did parts of the first arc (1-6) has a gorgeous style.

(Captain Marvel is also an awesome lady superhero comic, and worth a read for that alone)

[Picture is... all the characters from Marvel Comics standing together in a crowd. They're a bunch of superheroes and villains wearing colorful clothes.]

I can't get into superhero comics because I still haven't come across one with an appealing art style. Every popular comic seems to use the same "simplified realistic" style with its ugly grump characters.

I don't remember the artist name, but I remember when I was reading Ultimate x-Men ages ago, there was ONE artists that had this really awesome cartoony style. I think Polaris was involved, the school was, and Storm was being chased by someone from her past?

That sound familiar to anyone? It was also right in the middle where, the previous arc and then the next arc, had Logan with his short hair, but this one, he had his long hair back.

I was disappointed that I never saw that style again during it's run. :C

but, OP, I do get you. there's some artists that get used a lot and they're so boring. No variation.

Edit: Also, before the reboot happened, I remember Catwoman having this AWESOME almost Bruce Timm like art style for a time. THAT was great.

Do it! She's great. There are two main styles in the new run and they're both very unique!

What everyone else is saying about Hawkeye. It's as close to perfection as you'll get, imo.

(That said, most runs change artists often, so the series might cycle through several different styles. I'm sure there's something out there for you.)

I have to agree with the Hawkeye recs. And also would like to suggest Daredevil, especially some of the older arcs where David Mack did the art. I have never seen art like that in comics before and it blew my mind. He does work with ink, watercolor, found item collage, etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I blame Rob Liefeld, which is a shame because Liefeld is actually a really fun artist because of his rage faces and truly impossible bodies for both genders (and all species.) Lots of artists have come along since with more refined versions of this but that's what makes them boring.

Also, why why why aren't you reading OLD comics? Go look for the Marvel Essentials from the Silver Age. It's fun reading

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get why people keep saying try Hawkeye. It's the same general style just with minimal inking and coloring.

While I do sometimes choose books for the artist I think OP needs to find a character(s) they like because an artist staying on a book for it's run is a rare unicorn.

I'm the same way, secretmaker. I've tried several times to read comics (because I like superhero movies) but I'm left cold by the art. I have difficulty with the way the word bubbles are placed as well--too much space or something. My brain doesn't like the pacing, so I lose interest quickly.
