[Nostalgia Critic]

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's a difference between hating change and missing older stuff. Personally I miss when NC focused more on things from the 80's and 90's, although he occasionally still does. Same with Nostalgia Chick. At the same time, I can see how doing the same thing over and over would be repetitive, so it's fine that they've mixed it up a little. I don't like it that much, but I don't have any intense dislike for it either.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
His newer stuff is kind of tainted. Everyone knows he wanted to move onto to do different things, like Demo Reel. He just isn't a good writer, and the show was just a huge disaster of failure. Watching them is just a reminder that he failed at something he poured his heart (and over 200k money!) into. Also, he's begging for donations now. It's....really sad that he made internet reviewing his day job. Not stable at ALL.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sad he felt pressured to go back to reviewing nostalgic stuff.

And wow, I had no idea how much money he put into it, though thinking about it, it makes sense. And if it's really the only job he has, no, that's probably not healthy.

Eh, I think it wasn't just pressure. I think, as he said in the first new episode, he still sees things he'd like to do/say as the Critic. He just didn't want to be doing only that.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
do you have a source for the 200k thing?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how much he paid to buy the studio.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say he's a bad writer. Isn't he the one who writes the anniversary episodes?

s!a

(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I'd say it was just a matter of trying something new that just didn't appeal to anyone and wasn't on par with his old stuff. A writer is bound to write some complete shit that fails miserably.

Eh-yep, I agree.

Not to mention he had to bring back the Nostalgia Critic because his non-NC stuff, plus the other reviewers, were not making enough revenue off of their videos, since p. much NC was the only big draw that brought overall revenue to the site.

Kind of sad, really, but not surprising.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-04 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
At first I was going to mention how the reduced publication rate (once a week to every couple of weeks) can skew perception...
BUT HOLY SHIT 200K???
I'll toss a couple bucks into his fundraiser out of pity.

[Picture is Doug Walker, "The Nostalgia Critic", internet reviewer and comedian. He is a man with rosy pale skin, short brown hair and wearing eyeglasses, a dark baseball cap, a white T-Shirt and a black suit blazer over it. He is smiling and holding his arms to the sides in a "isn't this ridiculous" type of expression.]

I've hated all his reviews since his return.

Secret because: Most fans seem to think they're better than his old stuff, and criticize old fans for hating change and for preferring "lots of stupid yelling and screaming".

Agreed. I preferred the older ones - and still go back and watch them more than the new ones.

HEY GUYS THAT CARTOON YOU LIKED AS A CHILD IS SILLY

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-07-31 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
HEY GUYS THOSE OLD REVIEWS YOU USED TO WATCH AS A YOUNG ADULT ARE WAY LESS GOOD THAN THE NEW ONES.

Yeah this is an unsurprising attitude from their audience.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think it took him a while to integrate the new actors well, but when it got going I started really enjoying the new format.

I like them both equally well, but I don't fault anyone who prefers the old over the new or vice versa. It's just a matter of personal preference.

I was a bit hesitant to watch the NC when he came back, since I thought it was time to retire the character, but I do really enjoy the new stuff.

But I still enjoy the reviews he does as himself the best. Doug is a really good critic and even when I don't agree with his opinion (for example, Moulin Rouge is one of my favourite movies and not even remotely as a guilty pleasure) he articulates them well enough that I can see where he's coming from. I have been absolutely loving the Avatar vlogs.

I personally like most of the new ones more, but to each their own :)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
everyone in ATLA fandom is jumping on his dick because ~omg he's reviewing we've ascended~ and literally everything he's said is shit that has been discussed to death for the last eight years

i'm just so fucking sick of seeing his stupid face

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
So...don't watch his stuff?

I just don't understand this kind of attitude. It's really not hard to not watch something that you don't like.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think his older reviews were a bit funnier, but his newer reviews are a bit more thoughtful (at least some of them) and I enjoy that too.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's good that he kept the actors he hired for Demo Reel but the acting segments are so unfunny most of the time, I usually skip them.
And his 'analytical' rants as himself are cringe-worthy 80% of the time.

"Why is Lok so hot?" (Women love power, women love bad guys)
"Top 11 dumbest moments in LotR" (Sam and Frodo are too gay)

It's like he reads a dozen internet nerd rants by other people and mashes them together. He hardly brings something new to a topic, he just panders to his fanboys.
I can't say I liked his old stuff better, but it sure was more entertaining to me. At least then he wasn't trying to be a poor man's Roger Ebert.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
His Batman one made me cringe. "Oh, new characters, EH. Who is this Tim Drake, and why did Batman take another child after Dick. Whoa, Nightwing?! Some evil kid with a monster?!"

...Seriously? I can see him not knowing who Klarion is, but Tim Drake and Nightwing? Really??

Yeah, the Sam and Frodo are too gay thing annoyed me. He claimed he didn't like that not because he'd have a problem with them being gay, but because there are too few movies that have deep male friendships and it's a rare thing. Um... what? There are LOADS of movies that have male friendships! If anything having a same-sex relationship in a movie (where it's just a normal movie, and the main focus of the movie isn't on the fact that it's a same-sex relationship) is far more rare than bromance movies!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I like his new stuff better than the old; there's more of him in them, they're basically video-format pop culture editorials and I read such online a lot quite often. I never watched Demo Reel because I just wasn't that big of a fan.

It's difficult, though, because the whole fandom for the site is kind of built on that kind of democratic relationship between the fans and the audience. We could all review stuff for our webcams and edit the reviews together, it's just that some of us finally decided to take that up as a hobby or a semi-oft job that pays a little. But there's still that "home-spun" quality to it all, and we as fans probably aren't as picky as we would be if these web series were on TV, produced with some actual money behind them.

Then one guy wants to do something more ambitious and the fans are pretty quick to judge. Or maybe Demo Reel was unpolished. Or maybe it just wasn't as good as one could've hoped (or maybe the fact that his own web series had never pushed Doug much in terms of his writing talent so it turned out he wasn't that great a writer). Whatever it is, it failed. I feel bad for him, because it was obviously a risky venture he wanted to make happen and it didn't quite work out.
