I'd call you a ridiculous hypocrite if I wasn't so sure you'd be proud of it.

Slash fic just pisses me off. Everything is m/m these days, and it drives me nuts. Is it so WRONG to have het fic every now and again instead of "OMG HAWT BUTTSEXXORS LOL"?

...sorry, I've been drinking.

Methinks the SJW doth protest too much.

Not half as much as the idiots opposing them are.

Re: TB

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Protest? Nooooo. Just laughing at irony. Because if the Bechdel test got passed once in a while, slash probably wouldn't be so popular.

More respectful... hahahhahahaha 0/10

no points because it made me laugh and I have a net happiness gain.

IOW you have no actual argument. Well, thanks for being honest.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-01 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do people think that slash = fetishizing men?

Seriously, why? Do you people think all shipping is fetishizing, or just m/m? What about women who like f/f, are they fetishizing themselves?

Will someone please explain this to me?
queerwolf: (Default)

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-08-01 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you - I'm gay and I write m/m. I'm definitely not fetishizing myself - I'm writing the characters I think have good chemistry and that I don't get to see together in canon.
elephantinegrace: (Default)

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-08-01 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What about women who have m/m ships because female characters are generally poorly written in their canon and the male characters are the ones they relate to?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that every example of slash shipping is fetishizing gay people. However, I do feel like it happens a decent amount. Especially when I see so many people who seem to only care about the m/m shipping because "it's so hot!" and never seem to care for any female characters. It seems much more like a lot of them are straight females getting sexual pleasure from imagining two guys than people who legitimately care about the characters as people. It seems to me like straight males watching lesbian scenes in porn. And that makes me uncomfortable. (Queer female here, so I can't really talk about the fetishizing of men, but that is how I feel regarding the sometimes/potential fetishizing of gay people. And, yes, it is obviously just my opinion.)

It doesn't seem like fetishizing to me, at least not all the time. It seems to me more like "I like this better because I am attracted to both participants" or "the female characters are all portrayed as either pathetic or bitchy so I don't like them in a relationship with XYZ"

[personal profile] thene - 2013-08-02 02:25 (UTC) - Expand

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Because

1) occasionally it does fetishize gay men

2) much more often, it's a way of trying to play the "women are just as bad as men so we get a free pass for our shit" MRA crap

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I am OP, and while I don't think it's ALL fetishizing (as I said, a lot of it is more respectful than how mainstream stuff treats women) I do feel some sympathy if it makes gay men uncomfortable in the way that exploitative crap makes women uncomfortable. But I don't think it's quite as bad, in this case, since it's generally accompanied by a lot of affection for the characters as people, so it isn't as objectifying.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, on the one hand I see your point, but on the other hand, getting your jollies from other people's annoyance is kind of twisted. It's better to focus on what makes you happy, and trying to improve the world. Just being happy because someone else is upset or pissed off says more about you than anything. (Not good stuff, by the way.) I think we all do it sometimes, but it's a good mindset to move away from. It's like, do you want to enjoy the cotton candy you have or laugh when someone else drops theirs? Just live your life.

How's that for unwanted advice? :D Toodleooo~!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good advice in general, but honestly with the amount of shit I put up with, I think I'm entitled to a little laughing when something makes the assholes as uncomfortable as they make me.

Especially since, as other posters have pointed out, one of the reasons slash is so popular is because the female characters are nonexistent or poorly fleshed out, which is because misogynistic manchildren have far too much influence over what kind of fiction gets made. So really it's just their own entitlement biting them in the ass. Which I find hilarious!

[Picture is a black and white photograph of two shirtless men hugging each other. One of them has dark skin and short hair with very small curls in it. The other man has lighter skin and short dark hair. The way they're hugging obscures both their faces from the viewer.]

I'm HAPPY when slash makes male fans uncomfortable!

Why? Because I think the ones who object the most are the same ones who do things to make women feel unwelcome in fandom (rape jokes, "tits or get the fuck out", etc.) and are the most entitled and expect everything to pander to them. I think it's hilarious how offended they get when they see something that objectifies men the same way they objectify women.

I feel a little bad fetishizing (male) homosexuality, but not much. In my opinion most online slash stuff (at least the stuff I see) is WAY more respectful to gay men than the majority of comics and video games are to women anyhow.
thene: "I think it may be just as well to have a good understanding even with shades." (s.)

[personal profile] thene 2013-08-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
The guys you're talking about don't really come into slash spaces anyway, so what's the point? They don't suffer when you ship things; it's their own minds that do that to them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Slash isn't just limited to "slash spaces" it's really kind of the norm in most fandoms. Besides, they still know it exists, and it pisses them off.

I'm a woman and.....

(Anonymous) 2013-08-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I find the OP and their attitude obnoxious and sickening. Seriously if you honestly think your situation in life makes you entitled to enjoy people's discomfort-in my mind you're just as bad as the people who think being a man entitles them to make women uncomfortable.

A sick little creep.

As long as we keep thinking we are entitled to make people uncomfortable society is going to continue to suck. Pushing someone because you were pushed and saying it's okay has never done anything or reached any goals.

Also what about actual gay guys who find bad slash where 'Rape Is Love' is played straight and such uncomfortable? You know because that's a legit thing.

I'm not saying men have it worse, I'm not saying women have it worse, I'm saying don't complain about people who make you uncomfortable when you're going to turn around and go "lol look at them squirm. They're probably gross dudebros so they deserve it" .

Spite for people who MIGHT deserve it never did anything.

Fuck you OP , people like you are an embarrassment to feminism. If your response is "well you must hate women" or "you're not really a woman" then you've completely missed the point.

Ugh internet slacktivism is so fucking obnoxious.
