Sorry you have to go through this, OP. Since your problem seems to lie in the fact that people think you can't be active and have adventures while having a limp and not in how they react to your appearance, I'm not really sure if anything I can tell you would be of any real comfort. [because as to the appearance aspect, I think that canes are cool and give one a slightly Byronesque flair. Sometimes I entertain an idea of buying one for myself, especially since I have a weird habit of walking with a limp - even though physically I've never had one - but then I don't want people to assume that I have a disability, it would look like attention seeking]

Still, Dr. Joseph Bell, for instance - the/a prototype of Holmes - did really have a limp that he acquired after falling victim to diphtheria (that, in turn, he went down with after trying to save an ill child). Needless to say, he was still absolutely awesome and led an active life.

I'm sorry you feel that way, OP, but at least there are lots of cool characters who limp or have to use a cane: Gandalf, Harold Finch, Carrie Weaver, Dr. House, Hershel from The Walking Dead, Yoda...

This is one great list of characters.

And OP, I don't see what you have to be embarrassed about. Everyone has limitations, physical and otherwise, and it's just a part of life that we all have to deal with. Obviously some are more serious and more difficult to deal with than others, but the point remains: you shouldn't be ashamed.

Plus, canes are badass and can double as weapons! :)

Accelerator from Toaru.... Although looking at it I think his may be closer to a forearm crutch

I want to add Jody Parrish, who had to use a cane due to an injury, and still led a rebellion to save mankind.

I personally like that Mr. Gold uses a cane on OUaT. There was a great article on a PwD-related blog a while back about how his disability is played completely natural and not made into a huge thing. There's no ~very special episode~ about it or people making awkward concessions or whatever. It's just a part of his character. There are small things like when he told Emma he couldn't run, but it's never blown up or harped on. Makes me feel good idk. I sometimes fantasize about hitting jerks with my cane too oops

YES. This is exactly why I can't watch them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a shame, because the limp, the cane, and the war wound as the origin of it all - I think all that was both an important part of Watson's character, and really cool. One of the things that distinguished him from the "clueless bumbling observer" stereotype that he so often has become. It's a shame, because yeah, it's a cool thing to include.

*fist bump*

Me and my green crutch are awesome! And I can do anything when I use it as when I don't, which is why I do use it when the pain in my feet (and my balance) goes to hell instead of just trying to walk through the pain, which I did for years. But then I realized that using a crutch isn't that bad, and I really want to find a cane instead, but for now I like it. I do miss my black crutches though...

This also reminds me of a House secret we had ages ago, which said something along the lines of "My leg hurts too, sometimes I wish that would justify acting like House", I liked that secret for some odd reason.

Green crutches sound fantastic! My stick is purple polka dots, which has garnered many an admiring comment over the years :) It took me a while to adjust to the mindframe that I could and should use it, but it's helped improve my balance and walking distance so much. It's getting old now, but I <3 it.

I love House so much that when I had a pelvic injury and briefly had to use a cane I actually felt kind of proud (and yes, I know he'd think that was ridiculous.)

[Picture is a black and white photograph of the actor Jude Law playing Dr. John Watson in the Guy Ritchie "Sherlock Holmes" movies. He is a dapper man with light skin, short dark hair, a mustache and wearing a suit, a top hat, black gloves and holding a cane in one hand, and letting it rest against his shoulder. He is staring daringly at the viewer.]

Not Secret: Despite numerous therapy sessions and being in my late twenties, I walk with a distinct limp and have to sometimes use a cane to get around. I'm still fit and active, though, and try not to be embarrassed about it.

Secret: I can't begin to explain how bitter I felt when the newer adaptations did away with Watson's cane. I get that it's not practical and they were trying to give the characters a new spin but it just makes me feel like they don't want Watson to have any physical limits because "of course" he wouldn't be able to keep up with Holmes if he did.

Just because he - who am I kidding? - we have our limits, it doesn't mean we can't keep up with you.

Bonus Secret: I didn't always use a cane but to get through the pain of having it now, I sometimes pretend to be Watson out on my way to see Holmes. It makes it easier.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. I walk with a cane a lot of the time and most people have trouble keeping up with me.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Just wanted to say, canes are sexy (most of the time).

(Anonymous) 2013-08-03 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I use a walking stick too; this last Halloween I went to a party as Sherlock from the BBC series and in my head my stick represented John, which made me feel more comfortable because it wasn't the kind of environment I usually like to put myself in. So I understand where you're coming from *fistbump*

I thought the Jude Law version did use his cane. Maybe not, I guess watching the movies on a tiny screen on a bus barely counts as watching.

He uses it intermittantly (which is actually kind of neat as for lots of people, pain/ability levels fluctuate, and sometimes a prop is absolutely necessary and sometimes it isn't).

I didn't know Watson even used a cane. :/ I'd be upset, too; TV totally needs to have more disabled characters having adventures and being badass.

I...actually never thought about that. But I think I agree. That's kind of shitty.

I hate it because oh wow, a person can just magically throw their cane away and get on if they want to and if they stop wallowing in self-pity long enough to be 'well' WHAT AN ORIGINAL AND FASCINATING CONCEPT GOSH TELL ME MORE

House is a Holmes adaptation and he has a cane + limp!

Not sure that helps much in the overall scheme of things, I know...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
What you're feeling is totally understandable and totally reasonable. It's true that there are other characters out there who use canes, but if they're not your faves, they're not your faves, and there could still use to be more of them. If for some reason someone really wanted to see nondisabled characters on TV, that would be very easy. You have your favorite of the few well-written cane users in fiction and it's taken from you, and some snarky doctor doesn't make that go away.

OTOH, maybe this thread can function as a rec list for you, if you do want to find more characters.

I hope you don't mind my pimping out one of my fics? It's, um, circa Stephenie Meyer's New Moon (the second Twilight book). *sheepish*

But the cane-using character in this fic, David Pierce, was created by me. Mostly because the canon is some seriously ableist/sexist claptrap, and I like characters with actual imperfections, flaws and such.

I think you'll like David.
