Trans* is a really bizarre lifestyle/mentality that doesn't belong in fandom IMO.

More than half the US held the opinion that slavery was fine and dandy and a Constitutional right! I guess that means that we should have kept slavery around!

As a trans person, I'm genuinely interested in hearing your reasoning for this statement.

I've struggled with gender identity and issues my whole life and grew up surrounded by people who looked down on everyone that wasn't cisgendered heterosexual. That led to a lot of self-loathing and other awful stuff, but I've never had a chance to talk to anyone about why they think the way they do about transgenderism. I'd love to know because it's important for me to understand people.

I typed out a long, earnest reply as a person who may not necessarily be trans*phobic but maybe more trans*ignorant? If I actually made that reply, would it just create more wank? Do you really want to hear that?

I'm not trans, I'm cis and straight and I still want to know what's up with people who think how other people label themselves/live their lives/alter their bodies/whatever is their business. I've never got an explanation that didn't boil down to 'other people's choices make me uncomfortable,' and I'm just like 'sorry, but they/I don't have to change for you.' Transitioning or presenting whatever way doesn't hurt anyone, so why do they care so damn much? Get a hobby that doesn't involve judging people for their choices, your blood pressure'll stop spiking.

Fair enough, but now turn the concept around. To what extent are the rest of us required to change because we're making them uncomfortable?

(And before anyone starts: I am not talking about assholes who like to taunt or abuse people, any people, because they're different. Fuck them. I am also not talking about those who would deny people, any people, fundamental legal protections and rights because they're different. Fuck them too. I'm speaking of society at large being asked to rewrite our language and our fundamental understanding of concepts like gender because a very small percentage of the population are exceptions to the general rules. By what logic are we morally required to do this?)

Are you one who thinks sexual identity is a "lifestyle" as well?

I'm pretty sure you're just trolling, but I"d be genuinely interested in hearing your reasoning here. I mean, I'm of the thought that there isn't a single thing that "doesn't belong in fandom". There's a lot of stuff I don't want to read, but fandom is for exploration of themes and characters and tropes.

I think you're a troll, but fandom isn't about proportionate representation. Fandom doesn't do quotas. I've no interest in trans* stuff whatsoever, but I don't care what other people do with their time in fandom. If they want to write meta and stories and make fanart about everyone being trans* then I'll just go do something else.
