It finally happened. The garden gnomes have invaded the internet!

Well, I dunno who you're talking about but, if they are truly a dick, then godspeed to you my gnomish friend.

Go and smell the roses!

There's a Travelocity fandom?!

[Picture is the figure of a gnome (small male person with a pointy hat, pale skin, white hair beard and mustache) peeking out of the bottom of the secret.]

I'm boycotting your fic because I think your attitude toward other writers is childish. You learn by reading the works of others; get over yourself.

I read this in a silly gnome voice.

Then, I imagined a gnome appearing on this person's computer -- popping up from the bottom of the screen, stating this message with a cheery gnomish grin, ending on a note of bubbly laughter, and then slowly sinking back down to disappear off the screen.

It was a good imagining.

Do they even know you're boycotting their stuff and why? Because it might not be successful if they don't even know you're doing it.

By the way, your secret reminded me of this commercial.

My interest is piqued and I want to know what fandom this is and who it is specifically

+1

Details are needed!

I immediatly thought of The Hobbit because it's full of dwarves.

This is the OP. Your gif is incredibly fitting since the fic involves this character from this fandom.

Haha, I totally agree!!

People who say they only write fic but don't read fic just ooze 'superiority complex' to me, and it comes off as: any stories that aren't theirs are beneath them and a waste of time.

The thing is, how do they know if their stuff is better if they've never read it? That's my question.

So yeah, these people confuse me too, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not one of the people who writes fic and doesn't read it, rather the opposite--I've never published any of the stuff I do write online; I write for myself and anyway most of my output kind of sucks. But I try not to judge fic writers who say they don't read much fic by other people. I've never seen any of them claim they didn't read, period, which would make me cringe, mainly because I think writers kinda have to read for inspiration and on a more prosaic level to learn how stories work and how to put them together properly.

I know of at least one fic writer who's had to modify her fic-reading-and-writing habits considerably. She's still writing her fandom's most popular, and longest, AU fic. But from what I gather she used to write tons more a lot quicker, and read tons of fic and books. Now she's got some kind of cognitive/memory impairment and also some nasty chronic pain issues that mean her concentration is shot; she writes the fic in relatively short chunks, has it beta'd, and publishes it, then goes on to the next part. She even has trouble re-reading her own fic to check for errors; apparently she listens to audio books because she can't actually read much anymore.

Another author in the same fandom doesn't read much fic, although she does read published books. Her stuff seems well received, I like a lot of it, and she's the sort of insanely prolific writer that I normally associate with half-assed crap, but her stuff's really good. And I can see why she wouldn't read much fic, simply because I can't imagine writing that much of anything and still having time to do things like eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. Maybe she writes on the toilet. If it wasn't for the occasional rant about her job, I'd think she didn't work; for awhile there, she wrote so much per day I would look at my monthly wordcount and want to cry.

This is such a kind post. You're right, people can have perfectly good reasons for not reading works by other writers.

P.S. Whether or not you publish your fic, I hope you find joy in it and that you don't give yourself too hard a time over your wordcount *hugs*

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not because you're interested in writing fic that you're interested in reading it. It has nothing to do with a so-called superiority complex.

There's someone in one of my fandoms who writes fic but doesn't read it and yeah, it does come across as slightly egotistical IMO.

I don't boycott her fic though because she's a really good writer. So at least whatever arrogance she has is somewhat valid.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious, OP. Did the writer say, as everyone is assuming, that they just don't read other fics or was there more to it than that and they've actually said some really insulting things?

I'm just wondering because if it's the former - well, someone else in this thread said it much better than I could about why some people might not read much fic - but if it's the latter, I don't blame you.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
OP here.

The writer is insulting about other people's work. Writer in question spends all day talking about their own fic and gets upset when any other work is brought up and praised.

Writer isn't a dick for not reading fanfic; writer's a dick for being disparaging and elitist.

:)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
idk, sorry to say, but there are a lot of fandoms where one person is clearly a hell of a lot better than the other mediocre-at-best writers, and if some people like those less-talented writers' stuff, that's awesome, but an author is not obligated to read crap fic when they really do think it's crap. It's not going to help her get better to read worse stuff.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
OP: Writer in question is not better than other writers. Author has a lot to learn about writing, and reading other people's fic rather than turning up their nose would definitely improve their skill. Buuuut... writer in question has superiority complex. So.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I write fic. I don't read much of it at all. It's not because I think I'm better, it's because my preferences and the fic that tends to get written in most of my fandoms just don't match up.
