Aw, that's really sweet. I'm glad you've found your space, OP!

I feel completely lost and overwhelmed by tumblr. I feel like when I was in fandom over on LJ it was like a small community and journal entries were more like discussions or conversations. Whereas on Tumblr I feel like I'm shouting into a crowded room and sometimes people yell at me or nod while they walk by but otherwise it's just a giant room of other people yelling at the same time.

OP

That's a great description for tumblr and I think that's why I like it. I'm not comfortable being the center of attention and one-on-one conversations online always stress me out. With tumblr, I feel like I can shout in that crowded room and not worry about keeping the conversation going. Some people will like and/or reblog what I had to say, but it's quickly forgotten leaving me to talk about something else. I feel more confident and encouraged to write more about my fandom thoughts.

It's not for everyone, but it works for me. I hope you can become more comfortable with it one day too!

Yes, exactly. It's like, LJ/DW are set up for conversations among assumed peers, while tumblr is set up for broadcast to an assumed audience. It's a great platform if your ideal interaction model is performance for an audience, and since more and more of US society follows a performance model, it makes sense that it's popular and that people who're basically seeking to be looked at, or to look at others' performances, without any further interaction will feel comfortable with it.

It's just that it's a terrible and uncomfortable platform for people who aren't following the base model of one-way broadcast to a public following. Tumblr democratizes celebrity, if you will, and that's fine for a culture that isn't looking for mutual engagement. It's just useless for those of us who're looking for something other than followers.

Tumblr democratizes celebrity

I think this encapsulates really well one of my biggest problems with tumblr (other than the absolute lack of control over something as simple as your own posts, given the absence of anything even resembling security functions similar to flocking or freezing comments, etc.). Tumblr feels limited to two ends of a spectrum with little to no middle ground: it's either a race to gather as many followers as possible and be the one who is being listened to/is tumblr famous, or just...utterly superficial on the level of idly flipping through tabloids at the grocery checkout.

It's frustrating. I miss coherent conversations. I miss being able to keep up with those conversations with a simple page refresh rather than having to open a zillion tabs to figure out all the different directions things have gone. I miss being able to be a participant at a moderate level rather than having to achieve some astronomical level of tumblr cred or else be nothing other than another of the masses clicking the like button. I miss words because yes, I personally get more from discussion than from pretty pictures. I miss the social value of people at least having the ability to define spaces for general conversation, and complaining conversation, and insulting conversation, and attention-seeking conversation, and intensely private conversation, without being forced to either have everything out there for all the world to see or stay restricted to one-on-one messaging.

tumblr is, basically, really problematic for a lot of people who don't thrive on either anonymity OR heights of "fame." A lot of us miss the middle of the spectrum, because tumblr just doesn't serve it very well.

This is a great way of explaining it.

Basically Tumblr caters to people who are great at fanart or else want validation for basically doing nothing at all except clicking a Like button. Fuck that. The vast majority of people/fans are neither of those things.

So how do we create a platform that satisfies everybody? It's the next big thing.

I just... *cough* *stubs toe in dirt*

...I love you.
