Honestly, I feel that way as well. I was always one of those people that thought Tumblr was killing fandom but then I got into it and I really like it and feel more involved on there.

I don't understand tumblr. I've tried, I can't make it work. How do you make friends? Talk to people? How???

It's the same for me. I was very wary about tumblr, but then I got into it and now I *love* it! It's long ago that I was last that happy in a fandom.

Maybe I was just lucky in my fandom, but it is very easy to ignore idiots on tumblr and I got to know some really lovely people (some of them I've met in RL as well and the friendship has moved far beyond tumblr/fandom). I certainly don't want to miss tumblr anymore.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I went to tumblr to follow my friends, and what I found of fandom there seemed to me as extremely fragmented and lacking any kind of core community. There were popular art tumblrs with lots of followers, but I saw minimal interaction between the people there. Conversation, as far as I could see, consisted of people who were already following each other re-blogging a post with a new reply every time. 90% of my dash consisted of gifsets re-posted by my friends, and whenever I found something fannish to talk about, my options were to leave my signature by "liking" it or to contaminate my friends' dashes by re-posting it with a reply that somebody might or might not see.

I'm asking for serious: how the bloody hell does something like a fandom community even exist on there.

Tumblr isn't killing fandom, but it is transforming the way fandom talks to itself in ways that aren't necessarily good.

It's much harder to have certain kinds of conversations in certain ways on tumblr, but the metamorphosis is complete. There's no going back. We're going to be stuck with tumblr for at least five more years.

We just have to hope the next big fandom platform is better.

I was also initially wary of tumblr but once I got the hang of it (which I more or less have now...) I began to love it! It IS kind of hard to have conversations though, especially with groups, and that is the site's true shortcoming. But as for meeting random people and feeling welcome in fandom spaces, I agree that it's pretty great.

I've tried it and don't like the way it works at all. It's great that so many people love Tumblr and are having awesome fandom experiences through it, but I feel like I don't connect with people there the same way I can on different platforms.

[Picture is the logo of the microblogging website "Tumblr". It's a lowercase letter "T" in white against a neutral blue background.]

I have never felt more welcome and included in fandom since joining this site.

Secret because: Most people seem to believe tumblr is killing fandom.

Tumblr is great for a lot of fandoms. Sadly my fandom isn't one of them. It's dominated by a certain part of my fandom that is intolerant of other viewpoints than their own and is clique-y as hell. It's sad because it's a wonderful platform to work with and could be used for so much more in my fandom.

I was so wary of Tumblr to start with, but decided to try it anyway and ended up loving it. I thought I was done with creating fannish stuff because I just hadn't been motivated in forever, but moving over there brought back all my motivation and all the enjoyment I get from fandom that I hadn't really realized I had lost. I'm so glad I gave it a chance, I've connected with so many fantastic people and have had such a great time.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh...I don't think it's *killing* fandom, per se. More like it's changing it in ways I really don't like.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, that's really sweet. I'm glad you've found your space, OP!

I feel completely lost and overwhelmed by tumblr. I feel like when I was in fandom over on LJ it was like a small community and journal entries were more like discussions or conversations. Whereas on Tumblr I feel like I'm shouting into a crowded room and sometimes people yell at me or nod while they walk by but otherwise it's just a giant room of other people yelling at the same time.

I owe Tumblr an apology

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was killing fandom's smarts. But then I got into a few new fandoms and it turns out that I'd misjudged.

It wasn't Tumblr's fault. The fandom for which I switched to Tumblr is actually just much stupider than any other fandom I've ever been in. It's just abnormally full of very thick people.

I don't think tumblr is killing fandom. I just think it's taking it in a different direction than a lot of other people like.

I think... tumblr is accepting if you find the right people, and obviously you have, but on a whole? I find it to be a very negative space that I kind of skirt around and try to hide from. I stick with the 50 people I follow and rarely venture further.

I don't hate tumblr and I don't think it's killing fandom. It's just changing it into something I don't care much for. I don't really talk to anyone I don't already know and it's hard to feel apart of a fandom.

LJ wasn't perfect, but I didn't feel this disconnected when fandom was there either.

[personal profile] dazzledfirestar 2013-08-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is not killing fandom. I get the impression that people who were able to build up relationships on LJ or DW are resistant to it because well, change it hard. But if it's working for you, OP, rock on. Everyone's experiences are different and while some people are overreacting and digging in their heels, time rolls on.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've never been a particularly "social" fan, because I don't write fic (any more), I don't do art or graphics, and I only occasionally respond to my fandoms with anything thoughtful, so on LJ/DW I never really felt as comfortable as I do on Tumblr. I do think the style makes it difficult to have one-on-one conversations sometimes (especially since asks disappear after you send*), and I'm still really bad at striking up a conversation with someone I hardly know, but I actually get to feel like I'm participating when I reblog something! I don't have to say why I like it or write a long-winded rec or anything; just a reblog. The end. No pressure.

It's a really lovely way to follow people, read interesting conversations/meta, and share what I like without feeling pressured to comment or add something. Plus, because the notes don't count the number of likes/comments/reblogs to that individual, but over all of Tumblr, there's no way for me to know if I'm talking to someone potentially already overwhelmed with conversation, or someone who just got reblogged from someone popular. It weirdly makes me feel more open to talking to people, because I guess I can't tell who's Tumblr famous and who isn't, so I don't have this weird fear that I'm going to be just another insignificant person to them or get read as a sycophant instead of an interested person, or whatever thing I overthink about at the time (if it isn't obvious by now, I have some social anxiety, lol). I know Tumblr isn't for everyone, and I still feel like a n00b after all this time, but I really enjoy most of my time there.

*Speaking of being a n00b and asks disappearing, does anyone know of any extension that fixes this?

I really think it depends on the fandom. For some bigger ones, perhaps it is killing it. Goodness knows I've grown tired of the SuperWhoLock stuff (and I say this as a Who fan!). But for smaller, lesser-known ones, as I said in response to another secret recently, it's been a godsend. I mean...for the longest time, I thought the Gundam fandom was effectively dead here in the West. But on Tumblr, it's active and thriving, and I've met a ton of awesome people there since joining last year.

I'm half-and-half on tumblr, OP. Sometimes it's very nice; surrounded by people, but still in my own personal bubble where I can be by myself and no one will bother me. Sometimes, though, it feels very disconnected and lonely and much too big; I feel like I get lost. I miss the old communities on LJ and such in that respect; I feel like it's much harder to connect. Not so hard to get involved in fandoms, so you can sort of feel part of the group...but it's much easier to get swept away and ignored there, too.
