Question for immigrants

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
How was your life in your home country different from the country you live in now? Would you go back and live back home?

My parents bringing me to Canada from Russia was probably the only good thing they've done for me.

I'm an Irish immigrant to the UK. I dig the health system, more liberal laws, and the right of a woman to not have to die for the sake of a fetus.

On the other hand, I often pine for home in the face of the hideous British class system.

TBH, I probably would move home if there was any chance of finding work there, but there isn't.

I'm an ex-pat, not an immigrant, so my situation is weird. I pay my taxes to my home country and live in a country where I'm not allowed to own land because I'm not a citizen.

But I love it here. Social norms are very different to my home country and they make more sense to me. It took some time to adjust to how some things are done, like the road systems, public transport, and shopping, but I think all those things are better than where I'm from.

I've applied for citizenship and was denied, but I think I would like it less here if I were a citizen because they have very high taxes and it's also really expensive to get a driver's license (I'm using one issued by my country that this country accepts). I would be allowed to buy a house finally but it's so expensive that I wouldn't be able to afford it because of all the money I'd have to pay for income tax would cut my salary in half.

I think the situation I'm in now is ideal and I don't want to change it. I plan to stay here as long as I am allowed.

Also, sorry for not saying the countries' names but it would give me away and I don't like people to know that I'm an ex-pat instead of an immigrant.

I'm not sure where you're from, but US citizens theoretically have to pay taxes to their home country wherever they live and can only cease doing so if they renounce their US citizenship. I say 'theoretically' because you get a total break on the first $95,000 you earn abroad. Still have to file, though.

Best part: I can afford basic health coverage without a job offering benefits. It's mostly for emergencies and prescriptions, so if I need new glasses or my teeth hurt I'm screwed, but it's fully covering an upcoming MRI. (Damn commies with their socialist medicine and taking care of their residents' health and wellness!)

People are generally nicer, in this city. Buuuut good luck affording a place to live above ground.

I'd totally go back to live at home; I have no qualms. I like my parents (most days :P), and love my home town and my friends there. Since I'm trying to get into a specific degree program where I am, I'd rather network here.

People tend to be less open about their emotions in my home country; I've had to learn to have a more open social persona. I also felt like my old culture had less rigid gender expectations, which may be because it's a much less religious culture. Rent, public transport, and most other things are cheaper here and it's easier for me to earn a living, but I really, really miss universal healthcare.

It's not really possible for me to go live back home at present, because most of my job skills are specific to a bureaucratic system of the country I live in. I never intended to stay here forever but I've got more detached from my home culture over the years, simply because it moves on without you, you know?
