I just killed off my online persona after nearly ten years of being active in various fandoms, and am now starting over.

It's more refreshening and liberating than it should be, I think.

Full-on pseuicide, or just a silent fade?

That's what I want to know. Silent fade-away or "sorry guys, I'm out" and just leaving is one thing, and good on the OP if that's what they feel like doing, but a pseuicide?

Harsh. There are probably a lot of people who will be devastated to hear that :(

Yeah, that's what I'm concerned about. Pseuicide can be very hurtful.

I did something similar. I stopped using the same nickname on each and every website/service I sign up at.

People don't even recognize me from my art anymore. Sometimes someone will point out that person X has a similar style to person Y and I'll just sit in front of my screen chuckling because I'm X and Y at the same time and so far no one has ever noticed.

Good for you, anon. I keep meaning to give this a try, maybe not a full-on "death", though. I doubt I was ever active enough in fandom for anybody to go "hey, I'd know that turn of phrase anywhere!" (though that would be more flattering than dismaying), and it might help me get back into writing.

To be clear, did you fake your own death? Or did you just delete your accounts. I'm confused.

It's nice that you're so happy. I feel a sense of liberation in telling you that you're an asshole.

Also, I'm never going to take anyone in fandom dying seriously, ever. Knowing how many assholes are out there with the intent to hurt others by faking their own deaths, it's not worth the grief of actually believing that someone has died for real. Because they probably haven't. I'd be more worried if someone just stopped posting suddenly, because then they might actually have died.

lolwhut. You don't know anything about OP. Maybe their fandom was full of shitfaced assholes who wouldn't leave them alone. People like you always pretend that all people are great except the ones who feel the need to do something like OP. Sometimes doing something drastic is the only way out.

But I agree that a sudden silence would alert me more than someone saying -insert name- was dead.

Possible assholes in OP's fandom don't excuse what OP has done to the people who aren't assholes. For any possible fandom friends OP may have had this means sorrow and grief. It could turn out to be a traumatic and damaging experience for some people. Pretending to die just so you can feel happy and free is a horrible and selfish thing to do when you could just as easily say "I'm done!" and make a new internet persona.

And this is why I want the OP to suffer the embarrassment of people finding out what they did.

Uh, no. No it isn't. You can stop using your accounts or delete them any time you want to. Change your phone number if you have to. Or you could just stop using that part of the internet and go someplace else. No one ever 'has' to go for pseuicide unless they're a complete emotional sadist who requires other people's grief in order to feel good about themselves.

I don't see how faking your death on the internet is in any way better than just shutting up and leaving. Other than stroking your e-penis and feeling so very, very edgy, there is absolutely no benefit to that.
