Conversely, why does it bother non-shippers so much that some people's interaction with media takes the form of shipping? Is it secondhand embarrassment or something?

I am a shipper but I'm not hung up my OTPs being canon and I don't get people who are.

The only time when I care at all about whether my ships are canon is when the characters in the ship already have some kind of canon romance; if I'm just taking two characters and making them kiss inside my head, I don't give nearly as much of a fuck. Maybe it's because I feel like I'm "losing" something if the OTP breaks up/is forced apart in canon, whereas if they were only together in fic//my head, there's no loss? idk.

That's pretty much how I am. I care if a canon couple that I love breaks up, but if it's a pairing that doesn't exist (and never will) outside my head/fanfic, I'm not quite as invested.

Yes, totally. I remember being gutwrenchingly upset during Farscape at every down in John and Aeryn's relationship.

I don't know if it's an age thing, or a fandom evolution thing, or what, but it seems like so many shippers anymore are hung up on 'canon' and just can't be happy unless they get some kind of acknowledgement. It seems so weird to me. Like...just ship your shit and stop pestering the crap out of everyone else, ffs.

I don't think it's so much the shipping itself, but the desperate need to have ships become canon. That's what seems to bother so many people.

This is it for me. When people constantly ask about Destiel becoming canon, or when Bryan Fuller's most asked question (out of all of the possibilities given the complexities of the show) is "When will Will and Hannibal kiss?" I have issues with it. I understand loving shipping; I tend to have multiple ships for a show. However, being so caught up in having your ship become canon that it is all-consuming and mentioning that it needs to become canon all the time to TPTB? (Especially when there are many in-canon reasons that it has been shown it will not be canon.) That bothers me.

Like, I ship Dean/Cas. I like to imagine them smooshing their faces and other parts together. But I have never considered pestering anyone in the show about it, or felt any need to have my thoughts vindicated by the show or something. Which is why I don't like to admit I'm a Dean/Cas shipper.

I went througha brief period of shipping canon when I got involved in the Torchwood fandom.

Never again. Never the fuck again.

I personally think there is a huge freedom in shipping non-canon, in that one does not get so hung up on how canon shows the two characters and one does not get butthurt when canon fails to write the pairing right (with that "right" being very very subjective).

Of course the same outlook is also exactly where I get my huge lack of faith in how well canon sources write pairings (along with a few canons where canon pairings have been handled badly IMO).

Simple, because it's insulting and annoying to be called "homophobic" if we don't agree with someone's ship. Because we don't like to see the writers and actors harassed about such and such ship because we are afraid those same writers and actors are going to go all radio silent on the rest of the fandom because of it. Because we want to have a conversation, one conversation that doesn't revolve around shipping. It's not a romantic show. It's a horror-drama. Can we please talk about the horror aspect for a change?

I see what you're saying. But it strikes me that most of that's really more about certain shippers doing human-interaction wrong, rather than evidence that being focused on shipping is doing TV-watching wrong.

I guess I'm interested in knowing whether people have qualms about watching a show primarily for the sake of a ship. Where love of the story-telling, or genre, or other characters is a factor, but is secondary to the shipping. Because I think a lot of fen have shows where shipping is the main enjoyment for them, and that's always been the case.

If you tell me that you don't ship A/B, I'll gladly assume that you don't ship A/B and that's it. If you tell me I'm a sick pervert for shipping A/B and that A/B is an abomination... then I'll call you homophobic. But I don't understand the automatic jump to 'you probably hate gay people if you don't ship what I do'.

That said, I still hate that any group of shippers is accused of not wanting to talk about anything but shipping. Because I think it is part of the fun too. Sometimes we talk about the horror, sometimes we talk about the shipping, and I don't see why that is so 'wrong' or 'delusional'.

Oh yes. Shipping subtext no matter how juicy and ripe with fanservice isn't more important to me than the promotion of openly queer writers and artists engaged in the production of openly queer works with openly queer characters.

Exactly! I mean, I ship them, and I'd love if Dean was openly bisexual not because it's Dean, but because I think we need more openly bisexual characters, but I'm not going to start campaings to force my head-canon into other fans. If you don't see it, you don't see it and that's it. Wasn't that the whole point of headcanons?

The only time in which I honestly hate anti-shippers is when they go to a specific shipper-space and start criticizing shippers. Then, I might call them homophobic trolls.

The only time I care about being an anti-shipper is when fandom's so full of SHIPPING AND SHIPPING AND SHIPPING WARS OMG WE MUST SHIP that there's little else available. Like in OUAT - it's all pretty much ship and ship and it's kind of annoying.

And ship wars when you don't ship anything are incredibly dangerous.
