Pacing is important in all forms of storytelling...but, as far as web comics goes, so is sticking to your update schedule. Granted, not as important as pacing or most story telling elements, but if you have a really random updating you're going to have a harder time building and keeping a regular readership.

Yeah, I love Ava's Demon and I've been reading it since a little after it started, but about 2 updates into Gil's full introduction, it got really tedious for me, and I stopped reading weekly and decided to read after a month/month and a half's worth of updates. It's a lot more to read all at once, but it feels just a little less tedious now.

Otherwise, I agree. I get that sometimes life happens (I've decided if I ever get around to one of my original comics, I'm getting the entire story done ahead of time so there's no gaps/hiatuses) but one or two delays that go on for more than 2 weeks can sometimes throw off casual readership, I've heard.

This. It's a stunning comic and had me enthralled at first (especially the videos, wow), but I have to let the updates build up over a few months before I read them all at once or I'd completely forget what the point of all the pretty art was.

your thoughts on pacing, i would have them!

[personal profile] omens 2013-09-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
:D?

..but seriously: i'd buy it. i fail out of a lot of webcomics that don't grab me quick enough/aren't coherent but I have zero clue how to pace things myself. :s

Truth be told, pacing is hard. And I have yet to find a book on how to do it. Let alone do it for comics. I do a webcomic and I am always wondering if my pacing is off. Because I have X amount of story line and details within the story line but I don't want to it spread through so many pages. But still, sometimes it happens because leaving out a detail will through the whole story off. It's frustrating, to say the least.

All you can do is read other people's comics and learn from them. See what works and what doesn't work.

Link us to your webcomic! We need to judge you!

But-
I mean -
Wait -
Aw, screw it.
Judge away.

I'm no expert on pacing either, but your comic is hilarious and entertaining.

Thank you! I know humor is subjective and mine can be a bit twisted and weird sometimes, so it's always nice to meet someone who has the same humor as me.

It's pretty good! There are some panels where the characters look a bit too stiff, but holy shit your anatomy is cool, you don't cheat by making the characters barely move, your paneling is pretty decent, the writing is funny

I just hope you don't stagnate and stop improving

Thank you. And I hope I don't stop improving either. I know that Purson looks different now from when I started him. I didn't even realize it but he went from having large, thin horns to small chubby ones. (They kind of look like bent carrots stuck to the side of his head, don't they?) As far as running out of story, I just started chapter two and I have at least up to chapter four written. So, it's going to be a while before I am without a plot.

Does it take place in the future?

the downfall of updating serially and losing track of the greater picture in regards to pacing, filler, etc.

look at gunnerkrigg court: the whole thing is planned out chapter by chapter and page by page without regards on how slow it will be if you read it as it updates, and it shows in quality

Homestuck is great if read sequentially though. Periodic updates are lousy with pacing, yes, but if you read it in book form, or go back and read an entire act, the pacing is just fine.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I found out about it on my own, read at my own pace, with no hurry or pressure to "get to the trolls already!", and it was fantastic.

And to claify, Hussie has said this was his intention. I mean, you can love it or hate it, but his pacing is deliberate.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
why do you say "certain" instead of "these"?

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the logos of the webcomics Monster Pop! Homestuck, Ava's Demon, Olympus Overdrive.]

I'm starting to think that certain webcomics have no idea what the concept of pacing actually means. It's an underestimated element, but bad pacing is deadly.

Secret because: I'm not sure if it's really important or I just make a too big of a deal about it. Every time I bring it up, I get told I mean update schedule.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-03 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you transcript anon! I was wondering what some of the comics were and now I can check them oit. :)

Once again the day is saved, thanks to transcript anon!

Is this about Misfile, where pacing means padding every conversation out over five or six months accompanied with the artist begging for cash? I'd agree with you if that is what it were about.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Avas' Demon, oh dear. This is pretty amusing, since she's going on hiatus until January. I still don't really get how the plot is turning out, and it's way into the story by now

(Anonymous) 2013-09-03 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's one of my concerns about it, too. It's so far in and yet I can't see where it's going at all. And not in a good, surprise-me way.

Not knowing what your exact complaint is, I couldn't comment on pacing versus update schedule. There's a couple of webcomics that I love dearly that work best when I read them in book-like chunks. There are some that keep me on edge from update to update. But, no, pacing is something that cannot be overlooked. But pacing is relative to your frame of reference.
