Slightly unrelated to the exact wording of the secret, so excuse me Confessor.
Usually, 'the fandom is wanky/a shitfest' is said by people who got told off in it one way or another - and sometimes I see people complain about such happening to them.

Am I the only one who doesn't see this? (No, but rhetorical questions). I HAVE seen people go "Someone yelled at me after seeing their 1,533 white sweater vest glasses purple color scheme Cecil.", but is anyone actually calling them a horrible person or is this person (hate to say this, but here we go) 'being too sensitive' about someone going "There are a variety of ways to make Cecil - but most of them are white? Huh?" in the tag and not direct it at anyone?

There's a difference between wank and social related discussion. Again...this doesn't really have anything to do with your grievance so much.

I was done with the fandom when the hate blogs started popping up. Apparently now Carlos doesn't just have to be a certain magical shade of brown that no one can attain, he's also trans...?

And if you don't adhere to that, the "fandom" attacks.

So yeah I think Night Vale is just a shitty fandom. They do exist.

Like what kind? If it's something like "Hey, your Carlos is too light (Imagine: A Picture of Carlos where his skintone is roughly that of a new cardboard box) he should be like this (*picture of darker shade*)", I do agree that's nitpicky.

But if I'm looking at a picture and can't tell the difference between a bunch of white people and one of them is supposed to be Carlos, yeah, that's shitty.

I've no comment on the trans* issue...this is maybe the second time I've heard of that, didn't know it was so widespread.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'm not sure I'd say 'OMG, HE LOOKS -RACE-' is really a legit critism for him since he's only ever described as 'dark skinned' and I've seen that used to described anything from black to 'white person with a tan'.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sa

I apologize, someone else pointed out down thread and I guess I misremembered, but *he wasn't described as specifically dark - just dark as a whole which doesn't inherently refer to skin tone.

Who exactly is saying this, though? Is it a couple folks on tumblr who annoy you? Because I pay attention and I've literally never seen the Carlos Is Trans headcanon pop up.

You might have shitty tumblr friends.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
God yes the trans!Carlos debate. Like WTF, where did that come from and why is it suddenly transphobic not to make him trans.
chardmonster: (Default)

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-09-08 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
When a bunch of artists realized it's really hard to draw guys who aren't yaoi ukes, so let's say he's trans so we can still make him kinda ladyish.

That's my headcanon and if you disagree you're a terrible person.

Well, in WTNV there are plenty of assholes who like to just reblog people's art telling them stuff like, 'Carlos is not white'. Like this tumblr. http://carlosisnotwhite.tumblr.com/tagged/carlos-the-scientist Apparently "dark skinned" means you must be as black as night (even though dark skinned can be anything from Halle Berry to Djimon Hounsou). Some of them are just fucking stupid like:

This one http://media.tumblr.com/c45b9727a883cbbeddf18124b579ca34/tumblr_msjhlc6cis1sqeo9yo1_1280.png
This one with the caption "It took me a minute to realize that I seemed to have drawn Will Graham when I was actually trying to figure out what my headcanon for Carlos was." (like WTF it is a B&W sketch) http://media.tumblr.com/8f6542127b0514b8ddeac0299d5833f8/tumblr_ms82b8zysS1rb4d9qo1_1280.jpg

And this one (to name a few) http://media.tumblr.com/3fcdf5d30bf8382ea668e943857635e0/tumblr_mrkd7i2GMv1qf5cimo1_1280.jpg

While I do personally think the last one kind of misses the mark a bit, the other instances are foolish. Again, the blog gets some things wrong, but there isn't a polite way to go "Your canon drawing is too light". The person is about as bland as one can be.
chardmonster: (Default)

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-09-08 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I disagree on a few points (white people can be "dark skinned," check out southern Italy) but there doesn't seem to be any kind of bullying here beyond a single reblog.
vethica: (Default)

[personal profile] vethica 2013-09-08 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The stupidest thing? Carlos isn't even explicitly described as dark-skinned. I listened to the episode in question the other day, and the line is "dark, delicate-skinned Carlos". His skin is delicate, and he as a whole is dark. A word which when applied to a person can mean a whole range of things, up to and including a light-skinned person with dark hair. =_______=;; tl;dr sjws

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
REALLY? What episode is it in? I want to hear this for myself. Because so many people quote it as "dark skinned".

Hell, he's never even explicitly described as Hispanic. The people insisting he can't be white are doing so based only on his name.

Thank you - that's what I was remembering, but was too afraid to ask. "Dark" as a general descriptor is pretty ambiguous and I've seen it used to mean dark skin or just dark hair and eyes.

I'm mostly baffled at the reblogged black and white pictures. The person obviously draws the same face irrespective of race/gender. How can you tell in an uncoloured picture???

GodDAMN I want to throttle the owner of that tumblr. They're being such a sanctimonious smug little asshole acting like they're correcting ignorant artists but a huge amount of them are actually trying to portray Carlos as dark-skinned. Just apparently not dark ENOUGH, because even giving him a tan skin color that's darker than anyone else in the picture still counts as 'white'.

And this is after many people have pointed out over and over that there is no one 'shade' that a Latino has to be, because THEY'RE a light-skinned Latino, but apparently that's not good enough either.

I love how they're too chicken shit to enable anonymous asks, it's like they know they'd be eaten alive by people with actual sense. It's a shame, because I'd love to ask how in the world they use pictures colored in sepia/B&W/purple toned as an example of the artist white washing.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I always think "The moron who keeps this tumblr has no fucking clue about art" whenever they post a black-and-white picture, sketch or a picture where the ambient light colours the skin of the character (or when the artist clearly didn't have the right colours/technique to properly colour the skin in the case of traditional art).

I also find it incredibly racist to say "Only a certain shade of brown is dark enough, anyone else is not a POC" - especially when it's only based on a misquote.

I opt for making Carlos a Drow. Maybe then he'll be dark enough.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, that side of fandom is heated but the thing that pissed me off enough to make this secret was the wank that arose around people's different interpretations of Cecil critiquing (or mock critiquing) Carlos's chewing.

One popular writer started shitting over one of her fans for having a different interpretation. All to the point of the fan apologizing and slinking off.

I mean... chewing. The fans all ganged up on someone for one line.

I like any interpretation of that line but I think the fandom is really quick to establish what is "right" and attack anyone who has a different view.

So while I understand what you're saying, my secret didn't have much to do with the race wank, though that can be tiring. And I say this as someone who believes there is legitimate critique for how some people draw Carlos and the overall depictions of Cecil. And I think that's all I'll say on the matter.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have a link for that? I don't even know who the popular writers are in this fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
da

I kind of agree. One of my fandoms is incredibly nice, considering the source material is extremely violent. It's pretty small, there's maybe 50 regulars and 300ish overall. The wank that has happened has been incredibly minor, short and polite.
That said, one person went on a whole bunch of rants about how the fandom is horrible and that no-one should join the fandom - because they were told off (politely) over being rude to another fan's character interpretation (other fan may have been a BNF? It's kinda hard to tell)

I think if they had opened it as a discussion they would have been fine, but the person went straight to insults and got upset when they were told off.

That said, for all I know Night Vale is a wanky fandom. I know MLP, Supernatural and the Doctorwholock thing are because I've seen it, but night vale only every graces my board with nice art and some meta I skipped

Yes, I have seen many posts that basically boil down to, "if your Cecil headcanon is white, you are everything that is wrong with society." When a fandom focuses on headcanon policing, it is a shit fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. This sort of behavior is basically reverse racism, and it makes the fandom feel hostile.
