So, basically, you are the arbiter of what other people's sexualities are? How, exactly, did you get this job?

How about we let people define their own sexuality for themselves.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I'm 2Dsexual and I'm so fucking tired of the opression I face every day, with people deniying my sexuality. I can't even tell anyone about my sexuality without people thinking that I'm nuts. Fuck people like OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If you honestly wanted to identify as that, I wouldn't care. You're sexuality doesn't effect me. Someone else's sexuality doesn't effect you, so it shouldn't matter what they identify as.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's AFFECT you illiterate fuck. I hope you don't write fic with that keyboard.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not know what that is.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Being attracted to fictional characters.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a thing?

I mean, that's a thing unique enough to have it's own term?

Isn't everyone attracted to fictional characters?

You can stick any label on yourself you like. You can claim any sexual identity that you like. Go for it.

But if somebody wants me to identify with a character in their fic, they aren't going to do it by slapping a sexual label on a canon character so as to make said character more Special Snowflakey.

And if they're doing it to make a canon character share the author's own special snowflake-ness, *barf*

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
maybe they're not writing the character for you to identify with

maybe they're writing the character for them to identify with because they feel connected to the character and want more representation of their own sexuality

whoa no way people write fic for themselves?? how even

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Then I hope they understand when I back button away from their fic and don't start lambasting me as a bigot because I don't love their interpretation of a character.

I have every right not to be interested in a particular story. I'd love to live in a world where people would never call me "something-phobic" over it. And current reality is, there are people who damn well would do that.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Demisexual? Otherkin? This shit is all complete nonsense. Homosexuals suffer REAL and ACTUAL and NOT MADE UP OR IMAGINED shit every day. In fact they get killed for it. No one outside of tumblr has even heard of this other garbage. It's just so...adolescent. When I was 12 I too pretended I was special and imagined I had ESP. And then I grew out of it.

TL; DR Whenever I see someone's story marked with that nonsense, I skip.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Pansexuals and Demisexuals suffer REAL and ACTUAL and NOT MADE UP OR IMAGINED shit every day too. Just because you don't encounter it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I was going to read this thread for the laughs since we all know by now that nothing is going to be learned and everyone's just going to be angry and yell, but I just had to stop and look at this comment here as it is such a fine example of the McCarthyist internet where everyone is accusing everyone else of Not Suffering (and the law is that if you aren't suffering, you're an oppressing monster who must be hated).

Maybe it's just the way it's worded here, but sheesh, it went right from "this is nonsense" to "you don't sufferrrrrr" quickly enough that it seemed to be implying some relation between the two. What are this? What are this?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Only homosexuals suffer and only they can complain about it, right?
manifold: Look away from the computer screen and breathe. Welcome to the internet. Shit happens. (internet shit happens)

No one outside of tumblr has even heard of this other garbage.

I'm pretty sure this has been said about every single Internet subculture in existence, including ones that date back to the early 90s via Usenet.

I mean, let's be honest here. If you'd never heard of otherkin before Tumblr, you're either very young or been doing the internet equivalent of living under a rock. People have been mocking otherkin since the era of Diary-X and invites-only Livejournal, ffs.

Tumblr's just a site, guys. It's not some magical land of spontaneous internet wizardry devoted to inventing wholecloth everything you hate. The Internet was full of beliefs and identities you would have hated in 1993, I promise.

I'm pretty sure "Otherkin" isn't a sexuality.

People can define themselves however they like, but that doesn't mean the rest of us have to take them seriously.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I have every sympathy for everyone going through the crappy phase of trying to work out who you are and who you fancy. Especially with no active experience to draw on. It's hard and it's miserable, and I'm glad I'll never be back in that place again.

But I still reserve the right to laugh my hole off at the term "demisexual" until anyone can describe it in a way that resembles anything other than an overactive special-snowflake gland.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
"demisexual" is slut-shaming bullshit. the entire "sexuality" is based on the notion that "I only want to have sex with people I like" is such an unusual mindset that it counts as asexuality (which makes up only 1% of the population).

"demisexuality" is the norm and anyone who thinks otherwise gets all their ideas about sexuality from pop culture.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
i agree, i mean unless they're gay or bi as well (which i've never seen anyone gay or bi claiming to be demi) society is not set against them

That's what confuses me too. I feel like the cultural ideal (for women, at least) is demisexuality. I don't want to judge people's sexual identities, but it seems a bit weird to lump something that's so widely promoted in the dominant culture in with LGBTQ.

I get jumped on every time I say this, though.

To me it's just like a woman at my work who got a deep tan, was mistaken for an Arab and therefore understands racism. You can define yourself however you want, but don't pretend there's an analogous level of prejudice when there isn't.

The way I see it, if your romantic partner is a person of the opposite sex nobody is going to 'oppress' you unless you're doing a hell of a lot of inappropriate TMI broadcasting about what is or isn't happenning in your bedroom.

I suspect that the majority of demisexuals are people who invested too much in the asexual identity too young and are now too embarrassed to admit they're gay, bi or - horror of mundane, non-oppressed, and unfashionable-on-Tumblr horrors - straight.

Can I use 'horror of mundane, non-oppressed, and unfashionable-on-Tumblr horrors' one day please, that is such an awesome line. :D
