I've always suspected Amanda Palmer is mentally ill. It's the eyebrows, they scream Bipolar with a capital B. Add a dash of narcissism PD, et voila!

I don't know about Amanda Palmer, but Paula Deen and at least her brother treated their black employees like shit. The black employees were forced to come in their restaurants through a separate entrance, and a lot of them were forced to stay in the back of the house. Her brother verbally assaulted a lot of his employees. And Paula Deen promised this so-called close friend of hers equal footing in the restaurant business. Instead, she took advantage of her "black friend" not being able to read to the point where she never was Deen's equal in the restaurant business at all. That's why people are upset over Paula Deen, not only because she said the N word back in the 80s. It's even more frustrating to see news outlets only make it about the N word when it's much more than that. And these news outlets would know about the abuses she was accused of in her restaurants if they read the court documents for Lisa Jackson's (the woman who sued Deen on behalf of her former employees) lawsuit.

I can imagine Amanda Palmer, in comparison, is not as heinous.

Anyway, yeah, it's a much deeper issue than just her using the slur in the past.

First, did you do something weird to the color levels on that picture, or is she actually that pink? That is really pink.

Anyway, for my part, I have no interest in Paula Deen's brand -- I don't cook, I hate cooking, and I resent celebrity-branded cookware -- so I wouldn't be her fan even if she never did anything obnoxious. Amanda Palmer has made at least one song I enjoy.

Paula Deen is now a joke, who did something most people agree was wrong and who fails to recognize the seriousness of it. People treat her as a joke. (Or maybe that's my sources.) Amanda Palmer is the target of really vicious hatred in some fandom circles.

I feel mildly sorry for Paula Deen the way I would for almost anyone whose life crashed and burned. I'm considering buying Amanda Palmer's music just to spite the people who think she's the Antichrist.

I cringe whenever people on Fandom Secrets say: "People make such a big deal about hating her that I'm becoming a fan." ...Because they tend to say it about Amanda Palmer but not about Paula Deen. They both said and did dumb things. Why is it so "edgy" to like one (sometimes just to be contrary) but not the other?

Even before all of the stuff about Paula Deen being a crazy racist came out, I have no idea why anyone would be a fan of her. She's got an annoying voice and says stupid things while she cooks food whose flavor is made almost entirely of excess butter. How she came to have a cooking show in the first place is completely beyond me.

I read the court documents for the case against her and her restaurants and if even half of that shit is true... you'd have to be a pretty sick fuck to like her over it. I've no doubt people do, somewhere, but probably not here, or anywhere a majority think that Amanda Palmer, obscure indie musician, is a hairy ablist egomaniac.

Honestly, it's probably part because Palmer is young and pretty, and part because music sincerely touches people a lot more than cooking shows.

Also Paula Deen hate is more a general news 'oh shit scandal she's an awful person' thing, whereas Palmer's hate is more specifically part of geek/fandom culture bc she's married to Neil Gaiman and thus quasi-relevant. It's more entrenched/common in this space in particular, so the more of the pushback takes place here and is more noticeable.

Call me crazy but I think it might be because one of them is a musician and the other hosts cooking shows. One of these things is a lot lot more prone to having a fandom than the other.

Well, there's something of a difference between making performance choices that cause offence, and persistently racially abusing your employees over the course of several years. To use an analogy, most people disapprove of the man who commits violent armed robbery a lot more than they do the man who shoplifted a packet of skittles.
