Man, I get so bored with ACD Holmes. But glad you like it, OP. And I wouldn't mind seeing some weird time-bindy fic where Holmes and Sherlock go head to head. Watsons, too, for that matter.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
How many versions are involved? Because I think ACD!Holmes would find Sherlock annoying and RDJ!Holmes bizarre, but he'd probably get on well enough with Livanov!Holmes and Brett!Holmes. RDJ!Holmes would probably get along best with Basil the Great Mouse Detective (although he'd probably have to wonder at the same time if drinking the eye fluid had really been the wisest choice this time around).

With the Watsons, I'd mostly just want to see their reactions to Law!Watson having pulled out an actual cannon to deal with Moran. Cheating, absolutely, but a good soldier should always be able to lay his hands on field artillery at a push.

I need this fic in my life.

Reaction to Joan Watson smacking Moriarty down plz.

They exist. My favourite was one where ACD Holmes threatened to kick BBC Sherlock down the seventeen stairs if he didn't stop being such a rude brat.

Agree with this secret so hard. ACD canon is much MORE interesting than Sherlock, because he is not one-note. And has manners.

(Off topic.)

I'm catching up on Sherlock and I don't know what's more ridiculous, the over-the-top misunderstood superhero writing, or the fact that a cold-war relic of a military intelligence administrator would use a dictionary word to protect his account.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually like the character portrayals from the BBC series, at least for the two main characters (and probably more because of the actors than the writer).

It's really the only part of it that I do like.

Laughing so hard at the term "canon Holmes." They're both canon, honey. XD

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Holmes purists might like to think otherwise, but sorry, an adaptation is still canon.

It's a canon, but I don't think it's absurd to refer to the ACD stories as the canon, or just as canon; it's at the very least a natural thing to do, I think.

Sorry, I'm going to have to disagree. ACD's Holmes is canon Holmes because he created the character.

No. BBC Sherlock is a licensed adaptation. As such, it has its own canon. But it is an adaptation, not canon. If you don't like it, take it up with the people who own the rights to Sherlock Holmes.

There's only one canon Holmes, honey. The rest are adaptations.

The literally refer to it as "the original canon."

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Er, no, this is simply untrue. ACD is the canon. All other versions are adaptations. Including my own favourite, which happens to be Brett.

How do you work that one out?

Secret 9 - Canon books Sherlock Holmes, BBC Sherlock

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a drawing of a man (Sherlock Holmes?) in a cartoonish-with-a-realist-bent style smiling up at a kitty who is standing on his head.]

After reading the original Holmes canon, the BBC version feels like an angsty teenage rendition. I'm pretty sure if canon Holmes ever met BBC Holmes, he'd laugh at him. And I definitely like canon Holmes better.

YES. THIS. SO MUCH.

Not only laugh, he'd tear him to polite Victorian shreds.

And I'd love to watch it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, uh - you really should have used one of the old Holmes illustrations for this secret and not such a cartoonish picture.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
that looks like a Disney version of Hugh Laurie!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the fighting about canon is hilarious.

I just love Holmes, dude.

I agree that BBC Holmes & ACD Holmes are extremely different & ACD Holmes would be offended by BBC Holmes' behavior on many occasions.

That said, I still enjoy BBC Holmes. I have a soft spot for it as interest in that version is what finally prompted me to read the ACD Holmes (it had been on my 'to read' list for ages, but it wasn't a priority - BBC Holmes changed that.)

That's one of the reasons I find Sherlock unbearable. I like the character in the books, and Benedict's version is nothing like him. Of the recent versions, RDJ is closer ffs, despite the weird Steampunk AU.
