I am getting so damn sick of the constant whinging about allies in the queer community.

Yeah, lets whinge about the people who actually have our back because they aren't your perfect minions and might say things you disagree with (even tho generally from my perspective they're more right then you are).

After all who needs support when outnumbered a hundred to one when we have self righteous tribalistic nonsense on our side?

God me too. Especially the Macklemore wank. Like hoooooo-lllleeeeee shit. A white, straight guy wrote a song about how homosexual and straight love are equal and should be treated as such. He donated the proceeds of the song to a group that helped legalize gay marriage in Washington. The song was also written for his uncles who are gay.

But no, he is an asshole because he is white (he also wrote a song about his White Privilege (titled that), straight, and male. So you have someone who is acting JUST like people want an ally to act and he is an asshole.

I didn't know people were actually saying that. That's pretty shitty.

da: Mostly on Tumblr, of course. Which makes my eyes roll so hard. They can't get past the 'cis white straight male' part, apparently and that makes him an asshole. Nevermind that he put out a queer-positive song in a very queerphobic genre.

The thing about Macklemore that gets me the most is how he sought out a lesbian singer for the chorus, put his uncles who are gay on the cover, the song was inspired by his gay uncles not being able to get married, etc, and he gets branded as the hetciswhitemale awful dude?

Overall I think the whole ~hip-hop is homophobic~ bit is eyeroll inducing b/c he is not the only rapper to support gays ever, but people seriously downplay how much he tried to make actual queer people a part of his song, and why he wrote it, and that really bothers me. Like as a lesbian, dude, if my lil bro or someone did that for me and people dissed him as just some white cis straight male, I'd be so mad I'd have blood coming out my eyeballs. He didn't do it out of some dumb noble ally points, he did it because the issue affects him since it involves someone he loves.

Kinda reminds me of (and this is only mildly related) this post on tumblr where somebody got an Austim Speaks puzzle piece on their arm. And a bunch of autistic people on tumblr were reblogging it laughing and being like NOBODY ON THE SPECTRUM WOULD GET THAT TATTOO *eyeroll*

And I'm thinkin yeah, ok, maybe nobody would. But maybe this guy did it for his son or little brother? Maybe he doesn't know of the problems Autism Speaks had and he's trying to show support for somebody he loves?

Allies of things don't always do things the way the community would like, they don't always know the ins and outs or who's "bad" or "good", and sometimes they offer support that's a bit ignorant. But it's still support and I wish people would be a bit more gentle and forgiving of that.

I don't get the whining behind allies. Non-heterosexuals only make up 10% of the world's population. If you want anything done on a majority scale, you are going to need help from the majority. You are going to need "allies."

Though I hate that term "allies." There has to be a better term. Something that doesn't make you sound like a sidekick or a fighting against the Nazis country from WWII.

As a straight ally: thank you. I'm getting really sick of people who dismiss us just because we ~don't fully understand. Just because we're not LGBT doesn't mean we can't want you guys to have the same rights. Besides, who's going to help vote for gay marriage and such?

I think a part of the dislike is some allies making us look bad: those who make a big deal about BEING allies (Lady Gaga gets criticism for this), and those who are just around to fetishize LGBT relationships, and maybe there's other types that I can't think of.

Eh. I just want my queer friends to be happy. /shrug

I thought Lady Gaga was bisexual? I don't really pay attention to celebrities, but I'm pretty sure I read something somewhere about that...?

The thing is, it's great when straight people help out with the work because they too want the world to be awesome and equal for everyone's sake. Excellent.

But the fact that there's stuff you're not going to get about being gay is just a fact of the gay/ally dynamic, and sometimes we're going to roll our eyes and vent a bit about the straight dude or chick with the truisms.

Being gay is nothing like Macklemore's song. Macklemore's song is not about being gay. It's about the experiences of a straight guy who doesn't like heterosexism. Fair enough. There's totally room for that - go him. But I'm still gonna roll my eyes and snigger at dude's earnest straight-pain with my gay friends sometimes. Cause I have a lot of anger and bitter stored up and venting is cathartic.

I feel like being an ally should probably also involve sometimes giving the people you're standing with a pass on being dicks, even if only for pragmatism sake. Unless it gets to the point of being personal, you can probably take it?

ME TOO holy shit. I LOVE it when I meet a straight ally. Knowing that someone is on my side is a damn good feeling and I don't want them to be scared out of raising their voice for our cause. And that's what all this bitching about allies is doing. It's silencing people who would stand up with us.

Straight allies speaking up is NOT stealing our space, it's using their own, and I'm personally really grateful for it.

I don't like straight people who call themselves allies and then tell me to be grateful.

I do like straight people who I can talk to honestly about my feelings without fear that they're talking behind my back about what a pervert I am, and who actually do stand up against homophobes.

And I don't have to kiss someone's ass just because they don't want to kill me and they like, totes think I should be able to get married.

I don't want my ass kissed or showered with gratitude. I just don't want to be dismissed just because I'm not actually LGBT, just an ally. I like to think most straight allies are similar - not in it for brownie points or wtfever.

I really hope this is just an internet thing, because in my life all my straight friends support gay rights, and they don't want a fucking medal for it because it is just human decency, nor do I give out kudos to them for supporting me.

Which should not be mistaken for lack of gratitude or anything, but for me gay right, equality and all that treat everyone like a fucking human being is the least you should do to be a nice person...

I wouldn't get angry at any of my friends because they are ignorant on a subject, be it LGBT stuff, feminism, religion or anything else, because no one can know everything and the most important thing is that they want the world to be a nice place and for everyone to be accepted, if they go about it the wrong way once in a while, that isn't the end of the world, because in the end all we can do is try and trying is better than not doing anything...

I've always been more in line with, "You care about this issue even though it doesn't directly affect you? Wow, you must be a compassionate person! YAY!"

I mean, sure, there are some bad allies out there only in it for the points, but I highly doubt they're the majority like some people seem to act. I've yet to see a n ally co-opting the cause or anything.

Following this, I really hate the "You think you deserve a cookie, now?" crowd (God help me if you say "fee-fees"). Imagine, thanking someone for a positive act makes them want to do it more. Making someone feel good for making you feel good should be a good thing, not something to be mocked.

Not to mention, a less than perfect vote on my side is still better than a vote for restricting my rights.

I'm...torn.On one hand? Yes, people who do care and support for other's rights are awesome, and they shouldn't be told to sit down and shut up.

On the other? I've met a lot of allies who think being an ally gives them a free pass to do a lot of crap. Stuff like telling people in the LGTB community how to act, what words they can use, and generally acting like god's gift to the LGTB community despite people pointing out why what they're doing isn't cool.

tl;dr: It really depends on the person and how they act for how they should be treated in terms of being told to shut up, imo.

Wow I've met few allies like this. They sound like Tumblr types, but otherwise and in real life, it's pretty rare.
