This movie is great and it's one of the reasons I started to read ACD's books.

IDK how to feel about this, but I pretty much lose interest in a film when I discover that all the protagonists are teenagers. Kids? I'm OK with kids. Adults? Alrighty then. Teens? ...hell no.

These films are so boring. I feel like their creators just don't take their own characters seriously.

I remember this movie! It had bats in it. And hallucinogenics.

I watched this movie A LOT as a kid. I haven't seen it as an adult, but now I feel like I should track it down and see if it is as good as I remember it.

Secret 5 - Young Sherlock Holmes (by Steven Spielberg)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-14 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cover of the movie "Young Sherlock Holmes" by Steven Spielberg.]

This is my favorite version of Sherlock Holmes. Has anyone actually seen this movie? This is the version of Holmes/Watson I want to read fic for and it doesn't seem to exist.

I just got this movie on DVD... then my daughter stole it. *grrr* *L* It's adorable, if a bit schmaltzy at points.

OMG I loooooove it! I'm not sure it's my favourite (because Watson is always my favourite character and Elementary has the BEST WATSON OMG), but it's definitely a shame that it's relatively obscure!

I love this movie! :D

Totally a two generation family classic in our house. I have FEELINGS about this movie. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's astounding how many adaptions and revisions there are of Sherlock Holmes.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried but I just couldn't get into it. Kind of a shallow reason but one of the things that kept putting me off was the casting of Watson. Kid isn't a bad actor at all, but I just don't like the idea of Watson being younger than Holmes (at least, he seems a lot younger even though they were probably supposed to be in the same year if I remember right). Also he looks like Harry Potter so I'm constantly watching and thinking it's a HP/SH crossover AU.

NGL, I saw this in the theater, and loved it then. I recently found a DVD copy and bought it, shrieking delightedly, "MINE, ALL MINE!!!" and making my family rather embarrassed.

This is one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes adaptations - if I were making a top 10 list, it would be on it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I had this confused with Young Indiana Jones in my head. I'm always a little leery of the 'famous character you love as a kid/teenager' premise. Mostly because teenagers are not my favourite age-set in fiction.

Yep loved this movie too. And I am a Canon purist who would be shot on sight for ever admitting this un-anon.

I'm pretty sure I was in my first year of university when this came out in theatres. My friends and I all loved it. I wonder if I'd still like it now?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it just me or has this secret been made about every single adaptation of Sherlock Holmes by now.

This is a fun movie. I bought it a while back to see if I still enjoyed it, and I did. You're not alone in liking this movie, OP.

I haven't seen this film in years, but I watched it often as a child. I'm pretty sure I still it on vhs somewhere, taped off of Showtime.

I love that movie!

I really liked it

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Especially Nicholas Rowe. Not long after that he played Tennessee Shad in The Prodigious Hickey on American Playhouse and I really liked him in that, too. Anyway, Young Sherlock Holmes was a pretty good film, if a bit strange.

And, I don't know if this is good news or not, but they are maybe doing a remake (http://scifipulse.net/2012/11/young-sherlock-holmes-remake-in-development).
