I never understood people sympathizing with Meg. Or people who call others "misogynist" for not doing so. She killed Ellen and Jo. Tried to kill the boys over and over. And somehow I am supposed to like her?????

afaik some sjws will call you misogynist for disliking any character that happens to be female for any reason.

luckily most of fandom is sane but the crazy is always the loudest...

Ain't that the truth! The SPN PTB have a habit of introducing annoying/boring/bitchy/bratty female characters then, when the audience rejects these 'wonders', start whining that the audience is Jus Jellus, and unfortunately, a lot of the fans follow suit.

Not OP

I like Season 7/8 Meg. She's "a little good, which sucks" (according to her). I like the idea that demons can actually change, and are capable of some good every once in awhile.

Maybe it's because she's taken a shine to Cas that she started trying out the whole being good thing.

Early Meg I want to DIAF, though.

I like the idea that demons can change too, but they've certainly pulled a bait-and-switch on us enough times on that front that I simply don't believe it anymore. They should have actually followed through with the demons can be good plotline with Ruby, or Crowley, or someone who didn't start out their run on the show by offing main characters. Meg has been evil for at least five seasons--she doesn't need redeemed.

That's also true. And the whole Ruby thing did piss me off when I first saw it.

But, after going back and marathoning episodes, it actually made some sense for her Team Free Will entry to be false. Why would a demon who's trying to change and help the good guys keep banging on about how Sam needed to drink demon blood to go after Lilith? And want to sacrifice a virgin? And... a million other questionable things she did that I can't place off the top of my head becauseit'saweekendandmybrainisfried?

Ruby's double-agent qualities were there, we just didn't notice them the first time 'cos we took the red herring.

Whereas Meg, she actually seemed to be gradually sliding into goodness, almost against her own will (all kicking and screaming, like). I certainly wouldn't expect the Winchesters to shrug and say "we're cool now even though you tried to kill us because you're a good demon instead of a bad one," though. I would've hoped that she'd put in a lot of hours trying to prove she's changed.

Well, to be fair, Sam evidently did need to drink demon blood to destroy Lilith. And wanting to sacrifice a virgin isn't as incompatible with being a good guy on SPN as it would be on some shows.

...in hindsight, that whole virgin thing was a pretty high-stakes bluff from Ruby, since if they'd gone along with it the free-Lucifer plan would have been seriously derailed.

High stakes bluff or a hint of her true colours? I vote the latter, because it could have been a setup either way.

Or... sacrificing that virgin under those particular circumstances they were in might've opened one of the seals. Sixty-six seals, infinite combinations, y'know?

Re: Not OP

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
But would it have counted? The first seal hadn't broken yet, so I don't think breaking any of the others would work.

I agree that sacrificing a virgin is in line with Ruby's true colors, but neither killing herself and Lilith (if the spell worked) or destroying Sam's trust in her (if they tried the spell and it didn't work) at that point in time would have been in line with her long-term goals

This. Meg is all about Meg - she even said so - and she'll do whatever she has to do to survive. When it became obvious to her that cooperating with the boys/Castiel was what she had to do to survive, she was all in.

But she never once tried to buddy up and then screw them over - she was either gonna kill 'em, or she was being forced to help but she'd keep her word.

I hated the Ruby character because 'demon with secret heart of gold' is about the most boring thing i can think of, plus it was obvious she was manipulating Sam from day one, which was frustrating as hell.

In the end, Meg would never be good, but she was a lot more honest.

Re: Not OP

...because Meg never tried to manipulate Sam? "Pretending to be friendly" was her entire mo when we met her as the hitchhiker, and that escalated into trying (successfully) to fan Sam's family issues.

Being sneaky *one time* is a far cry from what Ruby did. Once Sam blew her off, she was full-on demon.

Re: Not OP

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
...dude, I normally agree with you, but I don't even understand your Meg defense here. Meg tried to trick Sam, possessed Sam, joined forces with Lucifer, killed Ellen and Jo, and then spent a while being all about survival but hardly on the good side. I mean, she only appeared in 14 episodes, and she was evil for 8 of them, with major redemption not happening until the last episode she was in. Ruby might have had a super evil plan, but she was at least useful to them most of the time.

Um...yes?
That's kind of the point, here? Meg didn't lie or manipulate or try to be their friend or promise them anything. She was straight-up evil from the get-go, and except for her very first encounter with Sam (when Yellow Eyes was still trying to woo, rather than coerce) she was always their enemy.

Ruby lied continuously, strung Sam and Dean along with promises of info and help, tricked them, withheld information.... She pretended to be on their side right up to the end. Meg never even bothered to pretend.

Re: Not OP

Well, it wouldn't have necessarily been a demon 'with secret heart of gold', it could have been a demon ending up feeling something (love?) for a human soul against its very nature. I would have found it interesting.

Exactly. She's a demon. You can like her because she's an awesome villain. But sympathy? No. God knows as a demon how many lives she destroyed given that she's a few hundred years old.

[personal profile] melissatreglia 2013-09-14 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! You can appreciate awesome villains because you hate them, and love to hate them. But the bad guys are generally not people you should sympathize with.
