Anxiety suggestions?
(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)While I can cope with some amount of anxiety, the point that I start having a super rapid heart rate, fast breathing, and blurred vision is the point that I mistrust my ability to bring myself back down from that point. And I really don't want to pass out on the bus.
Can I ask you guys for some pointers to relieve anxiety?
So far I've resolved to cut back on the coffee, get a good night sleep beforehand, and eat enough to not get the shakes.
Re: Anxiety suggestions?
(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 12:27 am (UTC)(link)I used to just roll my eyes whenever people talked about "don't forget to breath!" but after passing out one time I started to pay attention and yeah, when my anxiety gets bad and the heartrate goes up and tunnel vision starts etc, turns out I wasn't breathing all that well. Short nervous breaths which just aggravated the whole situation.
I also have a few "nervous tics" that help me. Tapping my finger against the palm of my hand in a certain pattern - just something that I can do to kind of get the jittery nervous feeling out and also have part of my brain concentrate on seems to help.
Re: Anxiety suggestions?
(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 12:49 am (UTC)(link)I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm kind of susceptible to vasovagal faints, so I've found that when I try to lower my breathing and concentrate, my body takes it in the opposite direction and drops my heart rate way too low.
I will try to focus on my breathing before I get super nervous, though.
Listening to really loud music with a heavy guitar and drum line helps keep my focus on the music, and keep me distracted.
Re: Anxiety suggestions?
If you have a trusted friend/family worker you can talk to, do so. I have issues with anxiety myself and airing out my thoughts once in a while/talking through the physical symptoms and sort of just recognising them for what they are, a physical 'over response', has helped me.
Edit: And focus on breathing, as the above anon said, and I somehow forgot to mention.
Re: Anxiety suggestions?
I have heard, though, that some people with anxiety find that exercise, seeing as it mimics certain physical aspects of a panic attack, actually prompts them when they weren't already having one, so it's something to be careful with.
Hand weights are good for something you can do pretty much anywhere without having to get up or moving quickly and attracting attention. Though of course then you have to actually lug hand weights around. Still, if it helps, I've found it to be worth it. If you're somewhere you have room, sit-ups and leg lifts can be done without any equipment. These are my standbys, you might find other exercises to work better for you.
Also, you might want to cut out the coffee entirely. I used to be able to drink caffeinated pop, but when my anxiety got worse, it got to the point where even a few sips of Diet Coke was enough to leave me incapable of anything but flailing around trying not to pass out for hours. No caffeine for me anymore except the relatively small amounts in chocolate. :P
Re: Anxiety suggestions?
*ETA* This is more for future and not for directly tmrw.
My anxiety was never really able to be controlled with anything other then closing off and going to bed so for short term I'm not much help but Good Luck OP!
