Long-lost loves (of fannish-ness)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's a thread to talk about the things you love that are hard to find. From fics and fanvids that seem to have disappeared into the ether, to shows and movies that don't come on TV and are hard to find elsewhere, to out-of-print books or even actors/actresses/etc. who seem to have fallen out of the industry.

What/Who do you miss most?

When I was a kid, I loved Mystic Knights of Tir-na-nog. But for some reason, no one my age remembers it. I am half convinced that it only existed in my imagination. I don't exactly want to see it again today, because I'm sure it's not as good as I remember, but in my memory, it was so magical and awesome.

I don't think I ever watched it, but I remember it being around!

I... remember the name. Hard to forget a name like Tir-na-nog.

Not sure I ever saw it though. :(

I went to school with Lisa Dwan (Princess Deirdre), she said the armour was made of fibreglass and sometimes splintered and they got poked by the splinters

I really liked that show as a kid. It was pretty popular where I lived.
If I remember correctly my favourite character was Angus.

I liked the show too, I think it was always slotted next to Young Hercules, and I was a Herc/Xena-verse fanatic, so I always had the TV on at that time.

Unfortunately I find Young Hercules pretty hard to watch now, lol. The same would probably be true of Mystic Knights.

I remember that show. I remember being really excited when it first premiered but in the end I thought it was strictly middle of the pack as far as Power Rangers ripoffs went.

For me, it's a Stargate Atlantis McShep fanvid set to "If You Were Gay" from Avenue Q. It was perfect in every way, and I *thought* I had downloaded it once, but apparently not and now I can't find it.

TV-wise, I wish for more Early Edition. I started watching it after falling in love with Friday Night Lights earlier this year, and managed to catch TV Guide Network airing it twice a day M-F. DVRed as much as I could, but that's only about 2.5-3 seasons, I think. The last bit of season 4 and then whatever aired from season one on before they stopped airing it. Only the first two seasons are on DVD, I think, and I can't really afford to buy them even if there are more.

Good anime fic from my childhood fandoms. John Travolta not being insane (I loved him as a kid).

I can't find a copy of this short film I watched as a kid called Dog Days. :C Nor can I find the name of this book I read as a kid. :C

I miss wearing dresses as a kid. People around here don't believe that anyone above ten years old should wear dresses.

That tv show The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. It was steampunk before steampunk was such a big fad. It was also really awesome. Rebecca Fogg is my hero. It only lasted one year and I so wish they had made more.

When I was itsy bitsy, my neighbour down the street, my sisters, and I would all get together and watch Sonic Underground. It was the coolest thing ever. So, a couple years ago, when I found a DVD boxed set, I snapped it right up and took it home to watch.

That show does not hold up, let me tell you. Sometimes not being able to find things you're nostalgically fannish about is a blessing.

There was some book I read as a kid -- it was kind of in the same vein as Gordon Korman ("The Twinkie Squad" and "Toilet Paper Tigers") -- and I can't remember what it was.

But it had a kid who wanted to play baseball, but his dad didn't want him to, so he kept his uniform and everything in his tree house. And he does really well, except for feeling super guilty the one time he leans into a pitch. And then his mom finds out when he's asking her for math help and she realizes he's trying to figure his own batting average. I think it may have had a Magical Negro character in the form of a janitor/groundskeeper at the field who's actually an awesome ex-player, but I might be confusing that with Maniac Magee.

there was this Buffy the Vampire Slayer fic I was inexplicably fond of. Like, it wasn't objectively all that great but for some reason i really dug it. I think it was one where Giles got killed by Angel instead of Jenny, and she caught his soul in her magic soul-catching orb thingy and went off to find how to bring him back. and Buffy dusted Angel cause ain't nobody kills her watcher.

There was this Conan/Ai vid set to Crystal Kay's Konna ni Chikaku de, but I didn't download it and it's since been deleted from youtube. I loved that vid. :(

Also, I used to read this manga series when I was a kid about three kids (two guys, one girl) that were secretly police inspectors/detectives. They had code names and the leader was called Holmes. They were pretty young and one case involved a bomb in an amusement park and a dog Holmes had befriended. I don't even know the name of the manga anymore, but I'd love to read it again.

WB's Jack and Bobby!!! I loved that series, it seems like nobody has ever seen it but me. There is no DVD release or Netflix or anything. Logan Lerman is so widely known now, you'd think they'd release it. It was amazing.

Family Dog. Unique little short-lived cartoon. One of the few cartoons my mom would watch with me. She even taped the episodes.

I'll never forgive CBS for canceling Shark. That was when I slowly started cutting down on the TV shows I watch.

I miss the complete insanity of the Ranma 1/2 fandom online. It was my first Anime series, and I have fond memories of watching episodes on VHS and then reading insanely long fanfiction on geocities-hosted websites.

Because I didn't have a Nintendo right away, I always associated the games (and Atari, which I never owned, period) ones with other kids I played them with, at their houses. Mostly cousins. So Atari always got associated with one set of cousins, Mario 3 and World with another, Mario 1 with my mom's friend's kid, and so on. My dad had a Genesis - another system I never owned - and so I always played on it when I stayed with him. I played Final Fantasy 7 with a friend in high school til we fell asleep at like 3 am.

Those games still remind me of the people I associated them with as a kid, haha. tl;dr video games were rarely a 'lonely' experience back then.

I know they haven't completely disappeared, but I'd like a revival of the careers of Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder.

I'd also like to see Hollywood find something for Jeff Goldblum to do besides more Jurassic Park sequels.

The DCAU - I mean, beyond the endless Batman re-imaginings - and all the smart, mature fantasy animation of similar quality (you know, Gargoyles, Marvel animated universe, Samurai Jack, all that kind of good shit that was in vogue in the nineties and early millenium). The voice actors I grew up with, too - I mean, hearing Batman and Superman and the Joker without their signature actors is like a punch in the balls sometimes. Serious adult Western animation like Aeon Flux! I really hate that the idea in the West that animation is by default for families or kids, or if it's for adults, it has to be comedy, is still so prevalent. If there was one thing I was hoping the anime craze would choke to death, it was that, but no such luck.

I dunno, I was a cartoon junkie as a kid and it continues today, I could go on and on about this, but I'm just gonna go hug my Young Justice DVDs and cry.
