What? No it doesn't. At least not so that I've noticed. Maybe people will mention the Silmarillion but I haven't seen anyone getting into serious debates about canon or anything like that.

I want them to converge on this secret and nitpick something. Anything. I want it to be so in-depth that I don't understand half the words in their sentences.

I want this so bad.

By and large there's no point in bringing up Silm canon in LoTR or The Hobbit. As such, few people do.

The only part of most Silm canon that is relevant in Hobbit or LotR period is the names of the Valar, Elrond's parentage and how that links him to Aragorn, and Thranduil possibly having a grudge against Dwarves because of the Silmarils, since he grew up in Doriath.

But honestly? Most of those are fanfic issues, not discussion thread issues, so they don't come up.

I always read Tolkien secrets, and I've never seen this happen??

When did this happen??

We specifically planned a LoTR secret for when we knew you wouldn't be here. Then all the LoTR fans went wild. Like a wild sex party, but with less sex and more words in Sindarin.

Shoot. I don't have have any opinions on LoTR, but I do hate to miss a good not quite sex party.

Psh. Sindarin. I'll have you know that I, at least, was speaking Khuzdul. There would have been Iglishmek, but that doesn't work so well over the internet.

OP, I think maybe you're just talking about the "Tolkien purists"?

This made me laugh out loud, even though it's not really true, because you reminded me of the attitudes of so many people in other fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, I was expecting a real LotR/Hobbit secret and not just one complaining about F!S :/

(I can't wait for the second Hobbit to come out! I'm one of those evil bastards who not only appreciate the Hobbit trilogy but also want to appreciate the Elven redhead)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, when it comes to Sindar and Silvan elves -- the kind who would be in Mirkwood -- we mostly have a lack of information on hair color. So red might not be that unlikely!

When has this ever happened? Sounds like a good time to me, sorry if I missed it!

I just wish more people who give it a try, it's an interesting book. Non-judgmental Silmarillion fan here :D

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the Silmarillion more than I liked LOTR. I thought LOTR was a bit of a chore to get through.

Me too :) I see a lot of head-canon discussions on Tumblr, but save one, they seem civilized and interesting. I haven't seen any-one talk about the Hobbit and then get into an argument with Silm-readers. Yes, there are canon purists about, but I think mostly, people who get into the Silmarillion just love to discuss it, not necessarily 'nit-pick'.

Are you sure you're not thinking of secrets about the Silm? I've seen it once or twice in Fingon/Maedhros secrets but not the LotR or The Hobbit ones. (Me, I'm waiting for the glorious wars over Tauriel.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I know I'm alone here, but I've headcanoned movie!Kili to be female (fyi, female dwarves are indistinguishable from the males to non-dwarves, except that their beards are shorter. There's so few of them that 12:1 would actually be a normal gender ratio for a dwarven party. Yep I'm one of those annoying Tolkien fans, but this comes from the LotR appendices as opposed to the Silm.)

I cannot WAIT for the wanksplosion and crazy, if only for the opportunity to write femmeslash porn.

As someone who would get branded as one of those "self-appointed experts" (I never claim I'm a expert, just some who read the Silm and is a fangirl of it), I don't see much citing of it happen in LotR/Hobbit threads.

And I'm far more likely to fangirl either the Hot Dwarves (i.e. the Durins), or fangirl my "Favouritest Favourite Fic Ever!!!" to the point of being called "Insufferable".

I'm more likely to cite the Silm over on the Kink Meme anyway. There it's relavent to know the details of LotR backstory, for fic reasons.
