Asterix secret?!?
If so, those comics had some pretty adult themes. It's not that embarrassing ;)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It must be Asterix! Ha! That's awesome!

That was my guess, too. It was a bit strange to see Cakafonix (?) not tied up in that one issue. ( Can't remember the title now.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess too!

This makes me so incredibly happy! I've still got a huge stack of 'em that I rescued from my mather, these comics were my childhood!

THANK YOU SECRET MAKER. (I hope you meant Asterix anyway)

Asterix??? I still own a triple issue and recently saw an old lady reading a Asterix comic in the mall <3

Cacofonix was always being tied up, poor chap. If only he could carry a tune.

... Saw this after posting my own comment :'D So they called him Cacofonix? Huh. A little bit heavy-handed, I guess, but not that bad.

I liked it. I didn't get it as a kid, but it makes me laugh as an adult. I feel like there's a backstory there. Like he was cursed as a child to always sing off tune, even tho it's his dream to sing/play harp.

When Goscinny was in charge of the writing, it was kept deliberately obscure if he really did sing THAT badly, or he truly was ahead of the times and the villagers just didn't get his music.

The later books, written solely by Uderzo after Goscinny passed away, stated that his music was so awful it even could make rain indoors.

So I'm not sure which would be really Word of God here, (or which would be "more canon"), since Goscinny was originally the writer and Uderzo just the illustrator.
firefly99: Two pixellated, 2D game characters. The one on the right is punching, and the one on the left is lying down. (MG2 - I'LL KICK YOUR TWISTED MIND OUT OF)

Even when Goscinny's in charge of the writing he's always drawn with wobbly music notes when he plays, and the other characters compare his singing to a carynx, yodelling and Abracourcix/Vitalstatistix screaming in agony. The other characters enjoy his music occasionally, like when he's performing with Goudrix/Justforkix (who seems to genuinely like his music) at the banquet at the end of Asterix and the Normans. The running theme seems to be that they only hate him when he's singing, so he's probably at least a competent instrumentalist but just has a really horrible voice.

I suspect he is also ahead of his time, though. If the new volume coming out doesn't reveal that he invented dubstep I'm personally punching my comic.

I forgot about that! I haven't read the whole series in years.

I guess WoG would depend on if you think Uderzo was still following the path that Goscinny paved out for him or not. I mean, it's still one of the original creators, but your mileage may vary, haha. I'd say either one is believable.

I love how all the names differ so greatly in all the translations - Assurancetourix in the original version, Cacofonix in English, Troubadix in German etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh! I like 'Troubadix'! *hides medieval/fantasy leanings hurriedly*

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The German versions were kind of cute sometimes, just not always as pun-y. I really liked "Verleihnix" - the fish monger. It basically translates into "won't lend out stuff".

I have a soft spot for a couple of the American names - druid Magimix, fishmonger Fishtix.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Asterix, Obelix, Getafix, Dogmatix, Vitalstatistix, Cacofonix, Geriatrix, Unhygienix (and his wife, Bacteria-- the fish people), Fulliautomatix, and whatever those two dudes who were always dropping Vitalstatistix on the ground's names were. :p

And it is sad that I remember all that, even though I had to think about the spelling.

ASTERIX. THIS IS ABOUT ASTERIX. THERE'S EVEN A MENHIR THERE.

So you liked how they tied up Asurancetourix at the end of every chapter? XD (NO IDEA of how the English translation handled the pun, the Spanish one kept the French orignal names).

He's Cacofonix in English. (Or Malacoustix, in some American translations.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
... Apparently 'picture with menhir' equals 'Asterix and Obelix!' to a surprising amount of people :D I came here to guess that too.

Mind you, they were fairly adult at times. It took me years to figure out the pun/parental bonus in calling the druid who keeps people supplied in strength-enhancing magic potion Getafix. (English translation, anyway. I'm not sure if the pun was the same in other languages).

[personal profile] lynx 2013-10-06 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's "Panoramix" in the original, and most latin-derivative languages kept it that way. Getafix it's quite clever, though XD I'd say even superior, given what he does with the magic potion and the villagers.

I'm reading the wiki with the names of the characters in English now, looking for puns.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The English one was full of them. Again, it took me a while to understand 'Dogmatix' (I got the 'dog' part, but not the 'dogmatic'/determined part) and 'Geriatrix'. And, actually, Obelix as well. In my defense, 'obelisk' is a word it takes a while to come across.

Oh, we had loads of puns too :D I like how they managed "Dogmatix" (Ideéfix/Ideafix= "To have a fixed idea") to include "dog" in it. The other translations I've seen, I'm not so keen on. But maybe that's my bias :'D This comics were my childhood.

I can think of things that are more embarrassing. Like when you were in middle school and your periods were really heavy and one morning the pad you were wearing wasn't enough to last until you could get to the bathroom during passing time and it leaked and you got blood on the desk chair in math class.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Okay... why did it take me so long to work out that this was an Asterix secret? O_o ... Especially as the first thought that went through my head was "Why yes secret maker, childhood comics are the reason orgies will always be associated with cheese fondue in my head". Being that's a direct result of an Asterix comic, you'd have thought I'd have cottoned on sooner.
