Recovery after illness?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Seizure anon back again. (I'm really sorry that I keep popping up and asking advice, I just don't really have anybody irl to bring this up to.) I'd like to ask your advice on something.

After I had the seizure on Friday, I've been kind of out of it. Logy, unmotivated, I couldn't think clearly, couldn't express myself clearly. But I had a load of homework and projects to do, so I manned up and did them for this week.

However, I really still do not feel awesome. I would like just one full day where I do absolutely nothing, and ideally sleep most of the day. My question is: is this okay? In view of the relative severity of what happened to me, is that justified? Or am I being a big baby?

My other question is, how do I bring this up to my supervisors if they ask why I haven't gotten stuff done that they need? I don't really want to just fling around what happened to me, but I don't want them to think I've just been slacking off.

Please help? I could really use some advice on how to navigate this.

It´s entirely justified. You are under a lot of stress, experienced a scary and exhausting health problem, and you are still waiting for complete news about this. Take the time you need, and just tell your supervisors what you are comfortable with. You could just say you had health troubles and leave it at that. Take care! *hugs*

This is good advice. I hope you get some relaxation time OP.

Thanks very much for the advice, especially how to approach my supervisors. I will keep this in mind. :)

Totally justified. I'm still recovering from a couple days of nonstop panic attack that started two weeks ago, and you haven't had nearly as long to regroup.

Take a day, rest up and relax, and if you can, I recommend keeping a cooler with nice cool drinks and some snacks by the bed so you don't even have to get up to eat and drink. ;)

Thanks for responding, this really helps give me a sense of comparison. I especially like the idea of not getting up to eat, hah. :D

Heh, I couldn't eat for a couple of days (seriously it took me two tries, hours apart, to eat all of a Hershey's Kiss one of those days), and was so dehydrated and malnourished afterwards it just made sense to pack a bedside cooler and not move while working on getting some strength back. It is the ultimate way to let yourself veg out and recover.

Unfortunately you still have to get up to use the bathroom unless you go so far as getting a bedpan, but the less times you have to get up, the better. You have the right to be "lazy" and take care of yourself when things get rough. ;)

Ouch, that sounds bad. I'm sorry you went through that, and I'm glad you're doing a bit better now.

Still, thank you. It's good to hear that it's okay to put everything off for a bit to recuperate, and my desire isn't selfish or stupid.

lol I try to book one day like that each weekend if at all possible

Your supervisors will definitely get it if you have a doctor's note in hand. Have you seen how they deal with other people who have temporary medical issues? That could offer you some cues as to how they'll respond. A doctor's note would be gold though.

Unfortunately, I don't think the office will provide a doctor's notes, but my supervisors are pretty understanding. We've had to do a lot of rescheduling each other in the past week, so they'll probably be okay if I just have one day where I'm not available.

Thanks. :)

It IS justified, Anon, and you should consider telling your supervisors at least that, you've been REALLY REALLY sick. Ask your doctor for a certificate or something, I don't know how things are done in your country. If you don't feel comfortable on disclosing your condition with the seizures, you can always ask your doc to be generic about it.

You're not being a baby. You have a legit health problem, and one severe at that. And it would be fucking unfair if that affected your grades, because those are circumstances beyond your control.

OP

Thanks very much for responding and being supportive. If it comes down to it, I will let my supervisors know that I've been having serious issues with my health. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that the clinic that saw me doesn't give out notes about sicknesses. I'll ask to be sure, if becomes an issue, though.

And thank you. It helps to have it put into perspective, that this is something that needs time to recover from.

*Hugs if wanted, Anon*

I'm actually glad you spoke about this, and I'm also glad I contributed somehow, even if it was only a little. Ask anyway at the clinic, there's nothing to lose in at least asking. I get that feeling of not wanting to be percieved as weak (specially if it has to do with academia or a job), but your wellbeing is more important, 'k?

Take care, Anon. We'll be wanting to hear more of you.

The first time I had a grand mal seizure (that I'm aware of), I was quite tired and sore for several days -- I'm not surprised you're still feeling crappy. Taking a day off and sleeping is not only okay, but probably a good idea if you can.

I've had a few more grand mal seizures I'm aware of (and, according to a housemate who could hear my seizing in my sleep, a fair number I'm not aware of) and the aftermath has gotten easier.

Replenishing your electrolytes, if you haven't done so, will help. (So Gatorade, bananas, coconut juice, anything with potassium and sugar.) When I was unmedicated I used to keep a bottle of Gatorade by my bed and drank some if I woke up feeling iffy.

OP

Thank you for the advice, this is great stuff. My doctor told me to drink a lot of water, but she didn't mention electrolytes. It makes sense, if my body was getting overtaxed during the seizure.

And thank you for letting me know this is standard after a seizure, it eases my mind about taking a day off. I'll definitely grab some electrolyte drinks.
