(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah well thanks to people like you, my area is filled with measles warnings because people havn't been vaccinating and this really sucks for the babies who are too young to be vaccinated.
Herd immunity only works for those who can't be vaccinated yet when those who can DO
so thanks for contributing to reactivating a nearly dead and lethal disease

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)Really? not at all? Not even if the child in question is being starved or beaten or living in neglect? I suspect that you would interfere in those cases because it'd be in the best interests of the child and society... like vaccines. Children aren't considered property any more and, frankly, the parents' ability to be the be all and end of child-rearing ended about the same time school became mandatory.
Pretty much everyone vaccinates right now, that's the reality.
No, it's not. There's a major and alarming rise in children catching easily preventable childhood illnesses because parents no longer remember how horrible small pox, measles, mumps, and rubella are. About 40% of the children in my state are unvaccinated and it's a horrible and unnecessary risk to each and every child, but especially to the children who can't be vaccinated.
I'm not going to go around telling people what to do with their children.
Even if you walk in one a mother beating her kid with a shoe? No, really, I walked in on that once. And you'd best believe that everyone involved told that mother what to do with her kid... including the state.
I strongly suspect you would've told them too. Making blanket statements like that is ridiculous.
But I'm not subjecting my own to that kind of risk unless there's a pressing need, such as a real-life active infection breaking out again.
It's not a risk, despite what voodoo-science has told you.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)As for the rest, you are what terrifies me about the US nowadays. You use the worst possible examples to justify not allowing parents to have rights in raising their kids. It's people like you who get kids pulled away from loving families because their parents decide to homeschool or spank once in a while. I don't know how old you are, but I grew up when the government was grabbing kids left and right for the smallest things. I lived in fear of being taken away from my parents because they chose not to subject me to radical surgery for an issue that resolved itself.
You believe that the village should be raising the child? I've seen the village and I'm keeping my kids the hell away.

Death.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)My brother had an allergic reaction to the Pertussis vaccine back when it was a live vaccine. He had infantile spasms that graduated to seizures that lasted from the time he was six months until he was five years old.
He is now 30 years old, 5'10" and 160lbs. with the mind of a three year old. He has tantrums like a three year old (which leads to holes in the walls and broken furniture). He needs 24/7 care. He can't dress himself. He can't talk. He can't wipe his own butt.
I love him and adore him and I wouldn't trade him for anything, but I can't imagine living like that.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)2. I always use the same example when it comes to a spanking argument. A kid takes the thimble of a blind tailor and puts it into a fire until it's nice and hot, then leaves it where the tailor can reach for it. This actually happened. Once. Because when his folks heard about it he got the spanking of a lifetime and learned that that was not something anyone should do.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:24 am (UTC)(link)Just so you know, I was homeschooled and I turned out OK, as did all the other homeschooled people I know. For some kids homeschooing is actually much better than public school.
I will agree with you that spanking is horrible, though. And also the anon you're replying to is coming off as a total jerk.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)Homeschooling is no better or worse than any other form of education, in my opinion. The homeschooled girl I knew when I was a kid exceptionally smart, and though her mother was a strict Christian, she seemed to want her kids to be well-rounded and was accepting of me, a godless heathen. Then you have people who do a shitty job of it. It depends on why they're homeschooling, and the education they themselves have. I'm not sure I'd want to live in a place where that wasn't allowed.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:30 am (UTC)(link)The problem with the word "spanking" is that the definition varies so wildly between users. It could mean a swat but it might be a beating.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 01:02 am (UTC)(link)I was only homeschooled after I was threatened with a gun at school and the administration did nothing about it. It was right around the time of Columbine and a couple of other school shootings, and I was scared to death. Of course, if that happened now I'm sure it'd be a huge deal and the kid who did it would've been expelled immediately but for reasons I still can't figure out, they refused to take any disciplinary action against him whatsoever. At the time my mom thought homeschooling was the best alternative, and we turned out fine. My brother and I both went on to college and have good jobs now.
Maybe I'll piss a few people off saying this, but in my experience when homeschooling is an issue it's because religion is involved. My parents didn't take us out of school to shelter us from society or keep us from interacting with people who didn't share their views, they took us out of school because they were worried about our safety. We still had friends, went to social events, always scored at least a grade or two ahead when we'd take the annual tests required by the state, and I got to graduate early at 16.
So homeschooling can work out really well in some cases. I do completely agree about spanking, though. There's no justification for physically striking another person in my opinion.
Re: Unpopular opinion thread
(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:25 am (UTC)(link)Parents actually have a great many rights in raising their kids and it's really hard for the state to take a kid away from his/her parents. No one is taken away for "the smallest things" - although those "small things" may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. Kids aren't taken away for being home-schooled, they are taken away sometimes for being "spanked".
Medical issues are trickier. If it's a matter of judgement, it's unlikely to happen. Id a kid has something like cancer and needs chemo to survive, that child should be given the necessary treatment to survive, even if that means taking the kid from his/her (usually unreasonably religious) parents. (Seriously. St. Jude's, for example, will care for and treat a child with impoverished parents. Cancer treatments for adults, however, are harder to come by.)
And yeah, I genuinely and whole-heartedly believe that there are situations in which children need to be taken from their birth parents. And shouting, cursing, unkind (and usually illogical) implications about me or my personal life, or threats won't change my mind on that.
