Well, yeah. You're romantically pairing characters whose only emotion for each other in the show was hatred at worst, indifference at best. How could you write them romantic and in character?

The same way Snape and Harry get paired or Harry and Draco get paired.

Spander doesn't really make any sense at all within the context of canon, but it's fun when a writer can make a pairing like that make sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I don't see either of those pairings working well either. (Maybe Harry and Draco, further down the line after Draco's realized what dumb ideas his dad had, maybe.) And I guess if you can figure out how to do it in character....but I don't see it being done well in character at all.

Couldn't you say the same about Buffy and Spike?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-13 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, before they started their relationship and, well, kind of during. I don't think enmity precludes sex.

And fandom seems to be all about the enemies getting together. I've seen it in every fandom I've been in. The two characters who are the most antagonist will almost invariably be the biggest ship, het or slash. (Femslash doesn't seem to work quite the same way IMHO)

And yet somehow Spike x Buffy ended up canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like how Xander/Cordelia started off.

I seriously have no idea how you could put these two in a romantic pairing. Maybe, MAYBE they could have hatesex in mutual despair that they can't be with Buffy, but they'd never want to speak to each other again after that.

I never shipped them either. I have a friend who does and she based their relationship around the fact that Spike stayed with Xander and that they shared a look in an ep when asked who hasn't slept with each other. From that, somehow it gets all romantic.

I can only see a hatesex situation between them as well.

I always found it hilarious that so much was built from a such an obvious bit of humorous fan-baiting.

There's some truly excellent fanfic for this pairing, but you're not wrong about the preponderance of Xander's chocolate orbs and Spike saying "Oi, wot?" every five seconds--not to mention the proliferation of claiming and Xan pet and Xander's abusive daddy. You're also totally right about the volume of character bashing that gets put in pairings for this fic--most notably Buffy and Willow.

I say all this as someone who cut her fannish teeth on Spander, wrote Spander back in the day, and still considers it a fun pairing.

Totally agree. Some of the fic out there is *amazing*, some is awful...just like every other fandom. :)

--not to mention the proliferation of claiming and Xan pet and Xander's abusive daddy.

I was never really in BTVS/ATS fandoms, and I think this was maybe part of why. I don't know if the fandom in general was kinkier than I was used to, if I just wandered into some weird places on first try, or if it was just the canon kinkiness bleeding over (Spike/Buffy, Giles/Ethan, Wes/everyone, Angelus/everyone, Spike/Dru, etc), but BTVS/ATS was just more kink than I was able for at the time. Generally, I'm more for gen/fluff/emotion than kink.

Now I'm wondering if it really was as kinky as I remember, or if I did just wander somewhere weird.

I think it depends on what part of the fandom you tipped your toes into. There was a lot of BDSM in the fandom, but it mostly focused on the vampire characters and not everyone was writing it. Xander fic tended to not be kinky exactly but more boringly fixated on his daddy or Uncle Rory beating him up and raping him all the time and Spike had to save him. *pets poor Xander*

Worst thing about this pairing

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Is that it's the ONLY active Xander pairing in the Buffy fandom. You'll get the occasional het ships with him as background, and crossovers where he's paired with any and everybody, but the only consistently written pairing for Xander that I've seen is Spander. It's aggravating to someone who doesn't ship this, at all! Where is all the other slash? Xander/Riley, Xander/Oz, Xander/Graham, Xander/Andrew, hell, Xander/Angel(us)? It's even more popular than the canon pairings! Faith, Anya, Cordelia, still less than the Spike stuff.

In the early days of Buffy fandom I seem to recall a lot of Xander/Angel. Next to Spander, isn't that a fairly large sandbox?

I really wish there was good, in character fic for this paring. I only sorta ship it, but I'd read a good fic featuring them if the story and characterization was half-way decent. All I've tried to read is pretty terrible. I usually get less than a chapter in before I start noping.

Yes but...

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
it was wildly out of character but there was some really amazing messed up kinky sex with this pairing. And for that alone I will read it.

I just accept that it's OOC, particularly if the fic is really good.
