Characters you didn't realize were AWESOME until you got older and learned to read between the lines

(Anonymous) 2013-10-20 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, what the subject says. Because there are a lot of characters whose awesomeness kind just slips under the radar, especially for younger readers, due to how a story is framed or how the actual consequences of a story play out, even if those consequences are largely due to chance.

Faramir. When I watched LOTR so many years ago, I was totally about Aragorn. Rewatched it last year and was just like, "I love this man. *squeezes Faramir tight* I love you so much."

Oh man, yes, Faramir is awesome.

Also, Théoden.

Faramir is the best. He really is great.

Holy crap, the same thing happened to me. Was all over Aragorn when the movies first came out, and when I recently rewatched Return of the King, I was just like, "DAYUM FARAMIR".

Now I just love both.

I'm lucky I had a slighty-squeeful older sister who helped me realize the awesomeness of Faramir the first time around.

Blanche from the Golden Girls.

Not to say I ever disliked her. Just so many of her sexual jokes went way over my head as a kid. Rewatching the show when I was older lead to a lot of oooooh moments.

Ginny Weasley. Even after she became more prominent in OotP I never really paid her much attention, and I was just like "okay cool, she's different now". But now I really love her story and how there are some things you just don't really notice until you reread, or someone points it out to you. Like just the other day someone pointed out how Ginny was described as looking distraught from the Dementors on the train, and just the previous year she had been possessed by Voldemort. She was pretty tough even before she came out of her shell.

She really was. I think a lot of it was also just that she was awkward around Harry, plus he was never around her that much until OoTP.

OMG THANK YOU! FINALLY!

I am a huge fan of Ginny too, and I am so sick of people making her out to be "all about" Harry or "the Hogwarts bicycle" or any other stupid stereotype.

I wish more people paid more attention to her character and the parts that aren't about "BAW SHE ENDED UP WITH HARRY".

Nynaeve al'Meara. I've gone from thinking she was vaguely annoying when I first started reading the series, to think that she's one of the best characters in the entire series if not the very best. And I think that's pretty common for readers of the series, honestly.

ilu for this comment

I have always loved Nynaeve, but I'm not sure where the point was that I shifted from "I like her she's cool" to "ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS". I think it mainly happened on my second read-through? I relate to her immensely in some ways, and really love the character development and dimension she has. She's possibly my favorite character in the entire series (maybe tied with Moiraine and possibly Mat) and that's saying something because there are so many good characters, it's hard to pick favorites sometimes.

Also <3 Wheel of Time - I'm on my third readthrough now, leading up to AMoL which I have not read yet.

Janeway.

Janeway. Granted this is because the series started when I was really young, Voyager scripts often sucked, and Kate Mulgrew thus seemed like Your Fifth Grade Teacher In Space.

Then I realized the woman can actually act when you give her material with which to do so

Aww yeah, I love Janeway. MY appreciation for VOY has gone up greately since I mastered the art of selective canon.

I think that's a pretty fitting epitaph for Voyager as a whole, honestly

I kind of hate Voyager, but I love Janeway. It's a dilemma.

Dr. Watson from Sherlock Holmes. When I was young, I was all about Holmes, because he was so smart and cool and everything. It was only later, when I had a more critical eye for the mechanics of writing, that I realized how much of the charm of the stories comes from the way Watson writes them. The guy is pretty awesome in other ways -- there are so many little things he does that he is too modest to call attention to, and most of his wrong answers are actually very good practical Occam's Razor suggestions that serve to show Holmes the little flaws in what would be otherwise the most reasonable theories -- but the way he writes is one of the really great traits that doesn't translate well into film/tv adaptations.

In a weird kinda way, Odo. I liked DS9 a lot when it aired/immediately after, but my initial favorite characters were Jadzia, Bashir, and Kira. I liked Odo because I like mysteries and thus Odo episodes often had mystery/crime plots, which was something I didn't get much in the other Treks. So Odo was unique for that; and I could tell even then that Rene was a very, very talented actor for being so expressive through so much makeup*.

Rewatching the show as an adult, the show is SO full of wonderful characterization. Odo in particular has some great development and such a dark and uncompromising past in association with the Cardassian occupiers on Terok Nor ("Necessary Evil", "Things Past"). And as I mentioned above, a lot of appreciation for Rene's performance- one of my very favorite qualities is an actor who can do a lot with silence/few lines, he certainly does. It's also something I see in Alec Guinness's George Smiley and Michael Kitchen's Christopher Foyle (and though he has never appeared off the page, add SIMON ILLYAN to that category and it's clear to see an archetype emerging...)

*I would also like to give a shoutout to Armin Shimmerman for the same reason and to add that he is an awesome dude and wonderful classical actor- especially his Richard III (which he did last year for two performances with a completely unabridged text.)

Winry Rockbell! I didn't went so far as hating her, but I didn't like the Ed/Win ship, and wasy way more invested in the Elrics' story than anything related to her. Mind, this was in FMA 2003, so I was going through my ridiculous fangirl phase as well.

Afterwards I realized she was awesome, but still was kind of misguided about it. When Conqueror of Shamballa came out I cheered because she was left in Amestris (with Shezka and Rose, and I shipped her with either/both of them); and the Elrics came to this world (and I loved Elricest. I know, I know.)

Now I love her on her own rights :3

I still dislike the manga for a lot of reasons (playing it straightforward-shonen instead of the subversion of shonen the 2003 series was, for example); and I'm not sold on her marrying to Edward. IDK. But at least she has a great development in both the manga and Brotherhood, so it's ok?

Sakura, from Naruto. I went from hoping she'd magically just go away to hoping Kishimoto lets her be even more awesome please please please
