people not understanding parody is a major cultural issue

LOL I didn't know it was a parody film when I was little. I thought it was serious business and I adored it.

It really is a great, fun film ^^

No joke, one of my best friends in middle school was deathly afraid of this movie. Nothing in the world scared her more than those aliens.

But yeah, if you take it seriously you probably won't enjoy it as much as if you recognize that it's supposed to be a fun parody.

I really do enjoy Mars Attacks, though. Favorite Tim Burton movie by far.

Ooooor, they understand that it's supposed to be "a silly parody film" and still think it's dumb as fuck.

For the last time, y'all: Not liking something does not mean "not getting it."

No, I 'get' it alright. I just disagree with your opinion.

I know it's a parody film. I understand what is supposed to be funny about it. I do not like the movie. I actually find it really boring.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it when I was too young to get it, so yeah.

There's a difference between genuine funny parodies and horribly stupid unfunny ones.

Mars Attacks is one of those horribly stupid unfunny ones.

Comes down to taste and it didn't mesh with mine, so. Whatever.

Or maybe they know it's a parody and don't like it anyway?

I don't like it. I don't care how much of a parody it is, it's just not funny to me.

I haven't seen this in a while, but I'm going to side with the people who don't like it. I dislike a lot of comedies and parodies because they are not funny to me. I get them, but they just don't work for various reasons.

Horror comedies and parodies, imo, often fail to integrate humor and horror into something both watchable and fun. There's a line between acceptable stupidity and intolerable stupidity in comedy that is both universal and adjusted to one's personal sense of humor.

So, people can "get it" and still not like it.

I'm guilty of accusing people of not getting movies I like too, though.

this movie scared the shit out of me as a child and i still hate it

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I know it's a parody. I knew it was when I went to see it and walked out of the theater half way through the movie. It is the only movie I've walked out of. It was stupid, loud, boring, and horrible. Parody or not, I hate it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, this was a hilarious movie and even if the rest of it hadn't been funny, it would have been worth it just for Lisa Marie as the "sexy Martian".

Oh man, I totally loved that movie. It was hilarious and I remember genuinely jumping at bits when it came out.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

Also...AAAAAAAAAH! Just the sight of those Martians scared the shit outta me when I was eight, and they keep doing it even now when I'm 22 =S

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Parody or no, there's parts of it I find legitimately disturbing and disheartening and the rest just isn't very funny to me. Doctor Strangelove is how you do "dark comedy" well. Mars Attacks isn't entertaining to me at all.

I really didn't like it as a kid. It was too weird and leaned heavily on B-sci-fi movies, which I had absolutely no experience with, and I didn't know or care who any of the actors were (although I did like the scene with the translator saying "we are your friends" while they slaughtered everyone), and the dog/woman thing freaked me out.

I think that I would enjoy it way more now.

Also, the theme might be one of my favorite things Danny Elfman ever wrote.

I'm another one of those people who are "Yes, I know it was parody, I simply didn't like it anyway!".

Really, the humour in it was random, nonsensical, and really jarring for me. If you like it? Good for you! Just don't ask me to watch it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
One of Burton's best, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I fucking love this movie, but I can totally see where it's a big miss with some people.

You know which movie I couldn't figure out why everyone loved? Napoleon Dynamite. Not my cup of tea, but my mother adores it.

I LOVE MARS ATTACKS!!!!!!!!!!

Nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I fully admit there are some things I don’t get – modern art, avant garde restaurants, cutting edge fashion, most of the French movies I’ve watched. And, yes, for the most part I don’t enjoy these things.

But you can fully understand something and even understand why other people might like them and not like them yourself. For me, these include, but are not limited to, Kubrick films, fishing, The Office (US or UK), and Voltaire’s Candide.

I mostly found Mars Attacks! annoying, but I did get it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoy Tim Burton a lot (Ed Wood and Big Fish are two of my all-time favorite movies), but I still don't enjoy Mars Attacks. It was meh.

^u^ I really love this film! I know it's cheesy and silly, but the aliens are really funny to me. ^^;

ARGH Fuck you OP. Those stupid things still scare the shit out of me and now I'm not sleeping tonight. I hate you.
