Seizure anon

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Okay guys, I'm back from the neurologist's-- he basically figures I probably don't have epilepsy, but he's having me do an MRI scan and an EEG just to be sure.

I... am absolutely terrified of the MRI. Being inside a huge, banging piece of machinery for a substantial portion of time does not sound like a good deal. It's this Friday, and I just want to curl up and die.

The EEG I'm not quite so worried about anymore, but I'm still not looking forward to them maybe provoking a seizure. I'm hoping that doesn't happen; I'm feeling less and less sensitive to light triggers as the days go by, which is awesome.

Anyway, I'm massively relieved that he figures that whatever happened to me were a few benign occurrences.

So yeah, just an update.

I used to have epilepsy, so I've done both the MRI and the EEG thing. The MRI was thankfully only twice, but I remember thinking that it wasn't as bad as I had feared. The EEGs weren't bad but they definitely triggered seizures, which yeah is the point but not fun. The thing to remember is that you are surrounded by professionals and really the best situation to have a seizure in if you do have one.

Hopefully your neurologist is right and it was just a random benign occurrence and so the EEG and MRI will just turn out to be annoying procedures and nothing more. Good luck!

OP

Thank you very much for saying this, it's eased my mind somewhat about the MRI. And yeah, you are right with the EEG: no better place to have a seizure than in a hospital.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Glad to hear. I suspect you just worked yourself up into that state. It's funny the way our minds can play tricks on us like that. Hopefully knowing the truth will provide some closure and put an end to it. (And don't sweat the MRI. You'll be fine.)

OP

Not sure how to take "worked up into that state", I'm kind of getting a "you're sort of histrionic" vibe from it.

Knowing the truth will definitely be helpful, but that I'm sensitive to light triggers right now, and may be for some time in the future, isn't something that's a product of my mind. I'll still need to be careful around light triggers until I'm back up to baseline.

But thanks for the reassurance, I really do hope the MRI won't be a big deal. :)

Neither are fun, but believe me, you'll be fine; mostly they're a nuisance. I always hated the EEG's more tbh. (Had those many years ago but it was difficult for me to fall asleep in complete darkness. I like lights!)

But it's totally worth it if you can figure something out and set your mind at ease. I hope your doctor was right!

Thanks for replying, this has made me feel a bit better. And yeah, going through it is worth having the official seal of NOT EPILEPTIC by the end. :D

I had an MRI, and it wasn't bad at all-- not even as loud as I expected, and there was a big mirror right above my head pointing down the tube so that I could look out of the machine instead of up at the top of it. Also, often they'll be able to arrange for you to listen to music during the scan if you want.

Good luck! And I'm glad it seems to be good news from the doctor!

Oh, how interesting, thanks for the info! I'll see if music is an option when I go in on Friday.

Thank you! I hope my good news is official by the end of this.

An epileptic anon here. I was really scared of the MRI too, but it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Just try your best to keep your mind busy, and it will go a lot faster than you think. The EEG is pretty unpleasant, like they do flash lights in your face (they start off slow, and gradually pick up speed), but that's just one part of the process. There are also breathing exercises, word repetition, and some other things I can't remember atm. Everyone who's administered the test has always been really nice.

Thanks very much for adding your experience, this has helped. Especially with the EEG procedure, as I have zip idea with what it's about, so this is good information to be prepared with.

Thanks again! :)

Sure! :) Hope everything goes well.

(Oh also! There is a nice part at the end of the EEG where they ask you to take a nap. It's kinda weird, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to fall asleep.)

The times I have done MRIs they haven't been that bad, it was just mostly boring and a banging sound (or that might have been the CT scans) but they put headphones with the radio or music on you so that isn't bad.

The worst thing for me was laying still for that long, then again I am not claustrophobic or anything.

Anyway I wish you luck and I hope it will all work out for you!

OP

Thanks for telling me how your MRI went, and I'm feeling better now that I know it probably won't be terrifying. Maybe I can ask them about the music.

But yeah, laying still will be a challenge for me, as I am a fidgeter. But if I'm still scared, maybe it won't be so hard.

Thanks!

The MRI is not that bad. I had one before. It was on my knee which was injured so it kind of resonated inside my hurt knee while it was banging, but you don't have an injury like that so you prob won't feel anything.

Hm, how weird. Thanks for letting me know, I'll ask if I can expect to sense anything. Thanks for your reply!

I've had an MRI. It was so chill. You can fall asleep in there if it wasn't for the weird noises the machine makes. I mean, unless you can sleep through weird noises. Then you're good.

My only problem was that I really had to pee. Make sure you don't drink a super lot before going into an MRI because you will be laying there for a while.

Okay, this made me laugh. :D Thanks very much for telling me how your's went, I'm feeling a lot more encouraged than I had been.

I will make sure to pee before I go in, haha.

Good. I'm glad you are feeling better and now are ready for not having to pee while taking your MRI.

Seriously, having a full bladder is horrible. Don't do that to yourself.

But yeah, glad to make you laugh.

So, I've had to have MRIs done several times at this point due to migraines. Unless you are claustrophobic (in which case, TELL THEM because there are MRI machines specifically designed for people with claustrophobia and if there is one in your area they will be able to set you up with whatever clinic has that instead!) they really are not as big of a deal as you may think.

The first one I had was at a super nice clinic where they asked me what type of music I liked so they could pipe it through to distract me. This is pretty standard at this point! They will also provide blankets and stuff if you think you're liable to get cold. Seriously, I about fell asleep during mine, and I was expecting to have major issues.
