Re: Non-fandom confessions

"Some idiot will say something entitled" is usually just code for "Fuck poor people, children minorities. Fuck everyone." Oh and, "Fuck paying taxes. I don't want my tax dollars going to pay for poor people to have things like food and shelter. They need to learn where their bootstraps are and how to lift themselves up by them."

Wow, you seem to like putting words in my mouth. Tell me what else I believe in. I'm curious to know.

LOL, JK. You're an asshat. But thank you for pointing out why I only admit this online. It's because of idiots like you who see 'Republican' and start making gross assumptions.

For everyone reading this, I want you to know that the Republican Party in my hometown held weekly breakfasts where candidates would come and talk to anybody who cared to show up. Every week they would collect money for the food bank. Not liking welfare=/= hating poor people.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-11-03 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I get your point and maybe ayrt was tactless but when leaders, representatives, and other public figures of your party are saying heinous things about the poor and attempting to pass laws and bills that show either incredible ignorance or outright contempt for poor people that's kind of what that party/label is going to be judged on, not on what your local form of it is doing.

And come on, your original comment was vague and included a word Republicans routinely use while making douchecanoes out of themselves. So, like, maybe some clarification on what you meant would not have been amiss.

I was being vague, you're right. I've given a couple of examples below to clarify what I mean by 'entitled.'

It's kind of wrong to judge wide swaths of people based on the actions/words of a few. If anon did that for any other group people on this forum would be screaming for blood. Why is it okay to make gross assumptions about how I feel about poor people? Will anon tell me how I feel about homosexual civil liberties, clean energy, and the military industrial complex next?

Re: Non-fandom confessions

* homosexual

Are you from the US? Can you, in order to not sound incredibly condescending and right wing, use a word that actual queer people use? Because in the US, "homosexual" is 98% a word that naive or bigoted people use.

....?

I was under the impression that 'gay' was the insult of choice. I've heard 'that's so gay' and I've heard 'stop being gay' but have yet to hear homosexual used as an insult. It's a bit clinical, yeah, but I've never heard it used to belittle someone. And nobody I know has ever said anything to me about it.

Anybody else want to chime in here?

Re: Non-fandom confessions

I remember something about a poll showing that when people were asked if they would vote in favor of "homosexual marriage" more people said no than if they were asked if they would vote in favor of "gay marriage". Homosexual is used a lot in contexts where the speaker wants to dehumanize the issue but I also think ayrt was being rudely nit-picky.

It occurs to me that if I had used the word 'gay' they would start yelling about that.

Kinda funny. I list three issues where I lean liberal and somebody accuses me of sounding right wing.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hello, queer here and I find homosexual a DEEPLY LOADED WORD. It's a pattern of ignorance, and given the speaker's pretense of social liberalism, also deeply relevant.

DA

And I agree with other anon. The word "homosexual" used in the way you did reads to me as either bigoted or just a huge generational gap. It's very...I want to say distancing, but I'm not sure if that fits. But you're right that "gay" can cause problems sometimes too, just in a different manner. "Same sex rights" or "same sex marriage" is a term that I've seen more people picking up.

I just looked through some friends' pages on facebook. They seem to use LGBT. But this is the first time I've ever heard that homosexual is offensive. I've messaged a couple of people I know asking their opinion on it.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

You're so ignorant, even having spent time in liberal fandom.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-11-03 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
This comment is bothering me so much but I can't parse why. The condescension? The irony? The pure bafflement? The idea that ~liberal fandom~ is some kind of divine educational tool? IDK.

I'm sorry

[personal profile] iceyred 2013-11-03 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
So I just got a message from a friend on facebook. He says, and I quote, "Unless you're speaking academically, it's typically only used by those who are less than friendly to the LGBT community, used with derision."

Sorry, guys. From here on out I'll use LGBT.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-11-03 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
On one hand I get what you mean but when representative members routinely say this stuff mostly unchallenged and you use one of their "code words" I don't exactly blame people for jumping to conclusions?

But also people use labels to convey context and history concisely so sometimes if you want to use a label unfortunately you need a disclaimer if it has been misappropriated by a vocal percentage of your group. Sorry?

Re: Non-fandom confessions

[personal profile] iceyred 2013-11-03 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I think people should be blamed for making assumptions about me and putting words in my mouth. That really ticks me off. I am perfectly capable of speaking for myself.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-11-03 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I can at least agree people should give you the benefit of the doubt and ask for you to confirm their initial suspicion of your unfortunate wording. But I also don't understand how given the fact you were so vague you didn't expect people to come into the conversation with preconceived ideas of what a Republican believes.

Ayrt

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have to make gross assumptions though, because I can judge your thoughts by your parties actions and, sorry, but elected Republicans and powerful Republicans and talking-head Republicans and the plain-ol' everyday Republicans I know have shown themselves to be bigoted, classist, racist, misogynistic, disenfranchising, treasonous assholes.

It doesn't matter how many cans of food your local chapter donates, you are still the ones voting in the people who want to take away women's choices and regulate them, who aren't interested in equal rights, who put tens of thousands out of a job and reveled in it.

How many of the Republicans you know are your parents

Re: Ayrt

This thread is way old, but pretty much everyone I know irl is a republican except my parents. My parents don't care about politics and don't vote.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

Oh and, "Fuck paying taxes. I don't want my tax dollars going to pay for poor people to have things like food and shelter. They need to learn where their bootstraps are and how to lift themselves up by them."

Steer clear of Rush Limbaugh yes and talk to a sane Republican about that. He or she might actually have a point, that isn't that classist.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-11-03 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mind maybe sharing some examples of what you mean? I'm genuinely not being facetious. I've just never seen an example of the bootstraps argument that wasn't classist and unrealistic.

Ayrt

Show me a sane republican.

Re: Non-fandom confessions

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
oh come on, there's no need for any of that. of course there are sane republicans. unfortunately not enough of them and they're not really in control of their party, but there's no need to insult every single republican out there.
