By the way, I dredged up the link where Tumblr goes all lynch-mob on a trans man for his how-to-pass guide. note: may induce raging.

He does indeed use the word "tranny" and that does make me a little uncomfortable, but since he's using it to refer to himself and not as a pejorative I just cringed once or twice and then went on to read about how suits fit and how bulking up one's shoulders gives one a more masculine silhouette. Tumblr just doesn't get it.

I'd call it a snake eating it's own tail but at least that carries the promise of self-destruction and I'm pretty sure these assholes are just increasing and uuuuughhh.
I'm building an ark I hope the Earth floods tomorrow.
You can come if you want. It'll be mostly cisscum though because, you know, re-population.

Reading comprehension is your friend, it separates the functionally literate from those who can read words and yet are illiterate. It baffles me how much of the Tumblr crowd seems to be college age or older. Old enough to know how to read and how to behave like civilized beings. Heck, I know 8 year old children who are better at being offended while maintaining composure and reason than Tumblr.
And for all they spout about activism and calling out [insert offence here], they're really only doing harm to the issues they claim to represent. The last thing transgender rights needs is a bunch of wackos screaming their heads off like this and making all trans people look like crazies.
I said a while back (I don't remember what secret it was in response to, and it was before I made an account so I can't really find it) that I wondered what Tumblr thought of trans men. Trans = shiny, man = demonscum. So where does a trans man fit in? Well, now I know. Those Star Trek gifs are starting to seem less and less worth it.
Anyway, I had a point when I started typing, not sure where it went. But this ark sounds like a very good idea. Just make sure enough of the cisscum are brilliant geneticists and reproduction shouldn't be an issue :)

Same thing with gender, too. You can claim that using "females" to refer to women is universally degrading to women in the English language all you want, you'll never make me believe that all the doctors, ministers, and community leaders who used "females" when discussing the prevalence of HIV among young African-American women are somehow secretly sexist and attempting to dehumanize the very women they were trying to humanize for that kind of discussion in the first place. >.<

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)I was so confused when I saw someone start telling someone to die for referring to someone's "female ex"
like "damn now we can't use that word either? ffs"

But there's absolutely no reason whatsoever why someone can't reclaim the word if he or she so chooses, which is why after the initial cringe reaction upon reading it, I went on to completely ignore the potentially offensive connotations and read what is otherwise a rather helpful article.
The reason Tumblr says this particular word cannot be reclaimed is because Tumblr is bonkers.
And your question wasn't rude at all, no need to apologize. If you don't know something, you have to find out somehow, and asking politely is the best way to do that, never mind what Tumblr says.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 08:54 am (UTC)(link)I've heard that only trans women should only be allowed reclaim it because it is mainly used as a perjorative against them or something along those lines. I apologize if I seem to be brushing it off, I don't mean to, but I'm really naive about feminist concepts as well especially when it deals with trans* issues. The exact argument they used escapes me and it sort of went over my head.
I tend to apologize a lot and since I'm really ignorant when it such a sensitive topic, I worry that I may offend someone. I've seen a lot of people dogpiled as well, so I try to tread carefully. Thank you for being understanding.

The T-word is used against trans women and male crossdressers much much more often than against trans men and female crossdressers, but that has more to do with popular media not seeming to know that trans men exist. We still get it flung at us on occasion (though it hasn't happened to me personally), but we're much more likely to be perceived (and thus insulted) as lesbians or gay men (it's kind of funny how you get different flavours of the gay insult depending on how well you're passing that day).
I'd say that because of this, trans women might have more of an interest in reclaiming it than trans men do (simply because they hear it so much more often), but it does apply to all of us and we're all in this together.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-13 03:08 am (UTC)(link)Alright, since it is used much often towards trans women than trans men, I can understand a bit why trans women wouldn't want trans men to use it. However, like you said it does apply to all of you as well so I don't see too much of a problem if a trans men wanted to reclaim it and apply the word to himself.
Thank you, again. The information you've given me is really insightful and helpful. I'd ask more wuestions about trans issues but I don't want to bother you too much with my questions. I will some googling instead. Thank you so much. :3

You, I like you. ♥
(Sorry if that's out of the blue, ran into too many "it's not my job to educate you" idiots recently, still have a headache from the eyerolling).

1. Would you please explain?
and
2. Could you please explain why you're not a piece of shit? It's perfectly obvious to me that you are a piece of shit because, reasons. But I could be wrong so please provide your rationalizations so I can attack them.
Of course, a better response is to drop #2 into the block list, but I'm not terribly good at the better part of valor.

It's not my job to go around educating the world about what I am, it's your job to educate yourself, but I am one of the best sources for you to use to educate yourself. If a trans man isn't going to take a moment to explain his pronouns to someone who honestly doesn't understand, then where is the person going to learn said pronouns from? Is the person supposed to guess? ask someone else who guessed? look it up on wikipedia and hope they're at the right article? This stuff is confusing and it isn't easy to find accurate information on it, so why would I not want to help rectify this problem and explain a few things now and again, even if it does mean I'm going to be explaining the same thing in the same way to several people?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 11:04 am (UTC)(link)I mean, I get why people wouldn't like the word "tranny" being tossed about, but wouldn't it be a lot like black people using the word "nigger" to refer to each other? But eh, well, to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)Even if I am still confused on where I lie on the gender spectrum. :( I hate being confused.
