Based off Secret #4

Any of you have a teacher that really impacted your life?

Mine was Mr. Kelly in high school. He was very, very hard and I loved it! I had always had an easy time through school and it was wonderful to be challenged. Each semester we had to write a 20 page paper. I did on Amy Tan and the themes in her books. Then I did one on a new author Mr. Kelly suggested named Robert Cormier. He is now my favorite author.

Mr. Kelly was always very particular in how we spoke (if you said 'kids' he would ask why you were talking about baby goats). And I once told him I hated and did not understand poetry, so for two months afterwards we had to analyze a poem in the first five minutes of class. xD

What teachers impacted you?

The professor who ran my genetics lab was awesome. I had just been diagnosed with depression and anxiety and she was the first one I opened up to about that and who showed me that there are teachers who will understand that those can be disabling conditions (I won't say that it's a disability for everyone but it can be). I started taking advantage of the services that were available to me because she supported me and even went with me to a few meetings and I'm doing a lot better now.

That is so awesome.

I wish I'd had someone to talk to about that stuff when I first had it. I was in denial for a while and also embarrassed. I never talked to any of my high school teachers about having depression. :/

I am pleased that your teacher was so supportive. It can make such a big difference when you have someone to listen and encourage you.

My high school zoology teacher.

I loved her class and it's the first class that made me think I wanted to study animals. It was the only class, besides band, that I didn't get bored in at all ever.

She was also really inspirational by demonstrating to me, through example and the way she lived her life, that faith and science don't have to be contradictory. That made a difference not only in my area of study but my entire life philosophy. And her lessons introduced me to some really important and interesting evolutionary concepts in the animal kingdom.

Your high school had a zoology class/teacher? I am impressed and jealous.

Oh man... I have quite a few.

I think I really only started to realize I was inordinately good at languages when my notoriously tough French professor in college told me, in regards to my classwork, "But you're brilliant, you know." And when I looked at her dubiously, she said, "You are, you really are!" This woman is like old school French educator, and her views on teaching are super European. So her opinion of my skills really helped me build confidence and branch out.

I had a professor who taught both Arabic and French; she remembers me to this day, and she approached me about being a teaching assistant in her Arabic class when I was an undergrad. She helped me realize that not only could I be a good teacher, I could teach in a challenging subject, in a challenging environment.

For my graduate degree, I had one teacher who really gave me confidence in myself. I was really wondering if I was appropriate for an advanced degree, and when I was floundering the hardest in my self confidence, and was casting about for internships, I asked her for a letter of recommendation. She sent me back an email that she absolutely would, as she thought I was a brilliant student and she had the highest amount of respect for me. So that made me feel much better about what and how I was doing.

if I may ask, what languages do you read/speak?

And I am glad your teachers have helped to encourage you so much.

I had a couple of teachers that really left a positive mark throughout my schooling. The school kind of thought I was mentally retarded so a lot of the time I just got brushed aside or ignored or flat out told not to bother or try challenging myself. But there were a few teachers that worked with me and really encouraged and pushed me and treated me like an intelligent individual. It really meant a lot to me. And funny, they were the teachers that everyone else seemed to think of as 'the mean one' or the really harsh teachers.

I think that is because the "harsh" teachers are more likely to challenge you and not take any shit. :)

I had a couple.

My teacher in middle school who taught 8th grade history. She really encouraged me (especially as a writer) and made a big impact. She passed away a few years ago, and honestly one of the biggest regrets of my life was that I never got to tell her how much she had impacted me.

My two Latin teachers, especially my high school Latin teacher, both did a lot. My high school Latin teacher in particular was super passionate about her job and the subject, really pushed me to be a better writer and student, and was encouraging. I went to a private high school and decided to go to a public state school. She was one of the few people who was really excited for me about that.

Finally, the professor who taught my Television course. I learned a TON from that class, and there were times when it could be super theory heavy, but the final exam had us analyze a clip from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I always knew that pop culture and academia COULD work together, but this really cemented that this was something I love to do.

I always felt this way about my Mr. Kelly. He passed away in an accident about two years after I graduated.

And I love teachers who use pop culture! I had a history teacher in middle school who would play popular music for us. :3

Mrs. McFarlin, my college algebra teacher. She's the only person I've been able to pass a math class for. She was just so damn enthused about it. :<

I wish I had found a teacher that could engage me in math. Most were boring or just awful. Kudos to her (especially since algebra sucks).

Only one I can think of that really significantly impacted my life is my art teacher who also ran the tiny private academy I attended during my teens. And that was because not only was he an awesome teacher who taught me more about design and color theory and observing-to-draw and such in one semester than I'd learned in any other art classes to this day, and not only did he cover things like costume design and performance art and installations, but he is, like me, a rabbit person.

In fact we've stayed on as friends after I got too old to attend the academy, and I adopted several rabbits from the shelter he ran, and he's helped out with any number of bunny health crises. (Rabbit wheezing on Friday and you can't get to the vet until Monday? Let me come over and show you how to use a nebulizer, and make an attachment for it that will fit your rabbit!)

So we still communicate regularly, and the student/teacher dynamic is entirely gone at this point, though it was never quite there to begin with because his classes were so laid-back, and we were encouraged to call him by his first name. He went through a rough time recently which culminated in divorce, and actually has called me in tears a couple of times. I wound up having to kind of talk him down, and it was only after the fact I went "...Whoa, I'm calming down and giving life advice to one of my TEACHERS..." But he'd become more than a teacher, a genuine friend. Brilliant, fantastic guy all around, and I am hoping everything falls into line for him quickly.

In high school, my psychology teacher was just a really nice person. She was kind to everyone, even the kids who were awful.

She passed away from cancer a year later (I think it was pancreatic, came on really quick), so we had to have a substitute teacher for the next year.

So now I'm about to graduate with a psychology degree.

Incidentally I had a teacher named Mr. Kelly who was a.. less than pleasant person. He used to bully smart kids by asking them questions they would have no hope of answering and then belittling them for not knowing the answer. Everyone used to just stay quiet and get on with work in his classes.

As for a teacher I really liked I have two, Ms. Pern my science teacher who was really good at helping me understand physics(I'm really bad at maths and I found physics very hard as a result) and was the reason I managed to pass my science GCSE. And my English teacher Mrs. Simms who had a wicked sense of humour, who got me interested in reading more than just my usual sci-fi and fantasy books.

My favorite high school teacher was Mr. Crossley, for Brit Lit. He taught poetry in a way second to none, and he never ever assigned any busywork. Ever. Everything we ever had to write for his class challenged us and enhanced our learning. I'm still proud of the papers I wrote in that class. His class was most like the level of discourse I encountered in college, both in regards to his teaching and our class assignments. He was fun and funny and respected our intelligence.

I still have a fiction project sitting on the backburner that got started because of an idea I had in his class. When it exists in some publishable form, it is absolutely dedicated to him.

Mrs. Burke taught me in grades 4, 6, 7, and 8 (small school). I was an excruciatingly shy kid and tended to fade into the background, but she never let me feel like I'd been forgotten. She used to let me stay after school to help her clean the classroom, and I could talk to her about almost anything. Having that kind of individual attention meant the world to me.

I'd say most of my primary school teachers were memorable in their own ways. I have fond memories of my second grade teacher (who was a really nice lady), terrible memories of my third grade teacher (he was practically abusive), interesting memories of my 5th-6th grade teacher (I was in a small school with dual-grade classes, so I had him for two years) who was the next male teach after the third grade one.

My english creative writing teacher accused me of plagiarism on one of my stories 'cause normally I got C's and this one got an A+ (it was tripe teenage angst which is what she likes). So she thought I had got a friend to write it or had copied it from somewhere and that really upset me because I had worked hard on that story and was basing the style off another book THAT I HAD LISTED.

I don't think that teacher liked me at all. IDK why, I wasn't disruptive, I got passing grades, I tried. I very nearly dumped the class it was so depressing but she got too happy when I started the transfer papers so I said fuck that and stuck with it just to spite her.

I feel very smug that she keeps trying to get stories published, but has only had a couple of poems in collection books published, while I just had my first fiction book published. I wish she still worked at the school so I could send her a copy.

My French teacher from grade 11 was strange, in an amusing way. I wasn't exactly a great student in that subject - she was a terrible teacher and I was lazy and bored. I was drawing a lot during class. Funny thing: Any other teacher would've simply thought "Ugh, she's a lazy ass, fuck her". Not my teacher, though. She had gotten it into her had that I was a highly intelligent, gifted person who was simply bored because stuff was too easy for me. What. I mean, that's cool, lady, but really: What?
