Just delete it. Or don't. It's a rec on an open source webpage. If people are going to link your fic to your possibly published work, they will. TV tropes or not.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
TVTropes doesn't allow this. Other authors have tried; the admins raise hell and restore the page and keep on restoring it despite the author's wishes.

Really? Huh. Well, then the rest of my comment at least stands. There is a good chance, people will find out the truth if the dig around, TV tropes or not. Of course, if the fic isn't famous in fandom, they might be able to slip by unnoticed.

Delete your fic, and then just say in the rec's it's a dead link.

Look, if you got rec's, you have fans. They will out you eventually anyway. So you can either cop to your E.L. James ways, or try to hide it and look like a much bigger asshole.

Ha, thanks! I shall endeavour not too be like EL James (who is a raging hypocrite and a barometer of How Not To Act). I actually don't mind being outed, but just in two minds whether to do a burn the fields and salt the earth of my internet past, or just say, meh, this story used to be a fanfic, toodleoo. I'd hate to be an asshole about it.

Delete the story, then use a different username from your fic-writing name to remove the rec. Under the reason for removing from TVTropes, just say "links are broken".

I love how everyone is trying to give you advice.

I'm just side-eyeing you. Why do you want to do that? You don't think it's even a little bit dishonest?
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-11-16 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Why is it dishonest?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Because how dare you profit off the stories you worked hard on and then attempt to cover up their fanfic origins. How dare you.

Essentially you're profiting off someone else's characters, setting, etc. even if you change the names of things or tweak details to disguise it.

I'm of two minds with publishing fanfic . Basically....if all they can do is search and replace and it looks like an original story than that means the characterization is seriously off.

I mean unless you're writing elsewhere fic there will be obviously similarities to another canon. it's not honest to just slap new names and words in there.

On the other hand, I do believe fanfictions can be edited into novels WELL. I've seen friends who've defanfictionalized stuff and came out with something decent, awesome even. But it requires heavy editing.

But when it comes to lazy search and replace editing jobs ...I'm not really even that mad, it's just "*shrug* "kay fine, but you might wind up looking a lil silly"

There are so, so many fics that are pretty much just related to canon via character names. One of the most popular Supernatural Destiel fics is just canon names. For some fic, it's pretty easy to file off the serial numbers.

that means the characterization is seriously off.

Not necessarily. It usually means that the story is an AU that doesn't borrow much backstory because really, who is going to pick up a published book and go "LE GASP! THAT CHARACTER IS CLEARLY HAN SOLO, HE JUST WORKS AT A COFFEE SHOP!" Most characters in fic are types even when the characterization matches canon perfectly, and who cares if you write a book about those types?

If you edit it enough though then it becomes more like, your own original work that was inspired by someone else's work. But if you just find/replace names and places and that's it then I do feel like you're profiting from someone else's work, because you're writing in the universe that they already set up, with characters they created, and then profiting off that.

I like you, snarky anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
There's a SPN fic recced all over the place that's been taken down for this sort of treatment, the author is totally open about it too. I just don't see the big deal. Maybe a few people who make the connection after it's published will say you did something wrong, but eh... by that time I'm sure that argument will be deader than it is now.
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-11-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, which fic? I just mentioned up above one of the most popular Destiel fics is so AU it'd be easy to make it original fiction. Supernatural seems pretty bad for AUs that have nothing go to do with canon. Or, at least it's the worst I've seen.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's called voice of the turtledove? It's an priest/altar boy thing. I think the trend is bigger than SPN, all the big slash fandoms have those now.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-16 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really not new. People published pro fic from Pros fic a long time ago. Like, decades, dude. (Pros=The Professionals, old British action show).
