so, why should fic be free, but art should be paid?

Really?

Original art is original and property of the artist. Fic isn't. It isn't a matter of whether the writer "deserves" to get paid but whether it's legal/ethical for them to be paid to write something that isn't actually theirs.

Or are you trolling?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
so you're against people commissioning fanart, then? or are you just a hypocrite?

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-11-20 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
That escalated quickly.

I was actually going to edit my comment but it had been replied to. But I'm not sure why you automatically think I'm ok with people commissioning fanart? I didn't say that?

Or is that what you meant by "art"? Sorry if that's what you meant but I thought you were asking "why is original art paid for and not fan [art, such as fic]"

Cuz you get a say on what the artists draws if you commission them, or if it's a finished piece then you know you are satisfied by it. You pay for a CHAPTER of a fic? waste of money if you ask me.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
and, presumably, you get a say on what the writer writes. at least as much as what the artist draws. you paid for it, after all; and that's the rub: in both cases, you are paying an artist for their skills.

so why should word art be free, while other art get paid for?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Except that these people aren't paying for the chapter to be tailored to their tastes; they don't get a say on what happens, they're just paying for the chapter to be released.

Why should art be paid? Seriously, why pay for fanart? That's always bugged me.

(Then again, I'm kind of an oddball--I think Andy Warhol plagiarized the original artistic creation of whoever designed Campbell's soup cans.)

[personal profile] vethica 2013-11-20 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Because you're making someone take time to draw you something the way you want it?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
The fan artist I know sells copies of her sketches and paintings, so you buy 'as is'. I've no idea how much money she makes from it, but she definitely makes money and it's not for commissioned work.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
because you are engaging someone with a skill that you do not posses to utilize that skill on your behalf for your gain.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Same as for writing stories?

I've never been game to make fanart an option for my commissioners (risky in the legal department) but it'd be, yeah, paying for the skills to replicate those characters in a setting/position the person wanted. Same as any other commission, just with already established characters. I'm guessing they really like those characters and I imagine porn would sell pretty well.

Plus an awful lot of the time it's a custom art work for only that person and/or they're also paying for the "name" of the artist.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
(DA)

For me, it depends.

It's a psychical copy? Yeah, I don't see why it shouldn't be paid for.
Otherwise? Hell no, unless it's commissioned original art instead of fanart.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
the thing with art is, that you are not paying (only) for the materials utilized in the production of the piece, but you are paying for the skill of the artisan who produced the piece. da vinci used about ten modern dollars worth of vellum and charcoal to make sketches, but you're not paying for the vellum and charcoal; you're paying for da vinci's skill.

and his name.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
You are missing the point, since a writer's skill should be paid for too but that doesn't mean it's ok for people to sell those skills when they aren't using their own creations.

'Da Vinci' isn't even his name. T____T

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't believe skill applied over a certain time should be compensated I'd make sure to send you a piece of paper and a pencil, and leave you to assemble your artwork.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
But you can apply that argument to fanfic too.

"If you don't believe skill applied over a certain time should be compensated I'd make sure to send you a piece of paper and a pencil, and leave you to assemble write your artwork story."

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
FFS, skill deserves to be compensated, but the way you show or sell that skill makes the value change (and sometimes *gasp* that value may not be monetary).

But if you really think everyone deserve to be paid not matter what or how they do something, then please start sending donations (you decided of how much depending of what they do and their skills) through paypal to all your favorite fanfic writers/fanart artist/gift sets makers/icon makers/secret makers/etc. Since, you know, everything they do needs both time and skills that get polished over time.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
But if the sketch or painting is available on their website, you could print it off yourself and not have to pay the fan artist anything.

Some forms of fanart have material costs. All three pieces of fanart I have commissioned were objects. Two needle-felted figurines and a kaleidoscope with art on it's sides and custom beads in it.

At the very least, I respect the right of fanarts who craft items like those the need to recoup the expenses of what they used to make them, not to mention postage potentially to overseas buyers.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
DA. I get what you're saying. There's a fan artist I know who sells copies of her work. You can see her work on her website but the newer stuff is small-sized and you can only acquire a full sized copy by actually buying it. I think her older stuff is more readily available for free because it's a number of years old (5+ at least).

I have no idea how much money she's made from it but it's accepted in that fandom that she (and other fan artists) can sell copies of their work whereas fanfic writers can't unless it's for charity.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-20 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
SA. To clarify, all of her work are sketches or paintings. They could be available online for people to print off/copy to their laptop.
