I don't see no shame in hurr.

I'm sorry you're having problems with your eyes. That's a bummer.

Quote:

Gross on girls
Gross on either
people who have hair sticking out of their shirt sleeves are pretty unhygienic
Hair is awful anywhere but on the head, and tasteful framing of your privates
I think it's gross for girls, boys, and whatever else anybody identifies as

Don't like it? Cool. Not your personal style? Rock on, baldy. Telling people they're gross because of a natural body function? Not fucking okay. HTH.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think people who are sick and oozing snot out of their runny noses are gross

That is a natural body function, sometimes it happens to all of us

This does not make them lesser people, just people I do not want to touch

Given that those people are using gross as a synonym for distasteful, and that the point of this thread was essentially asking whether or not they find it distasteful, I really don't think that counts as "shaming" so much as answering a question.

It's spitting into a crowd of people vs. spitting into a spittoon, Anonypants.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between "I don't like it/I wouldn't/I wouldn't want to be intimate with someone who doesn't" and "people who don't are gross and lacking in personal hygiene".

For example. Let's say I don't like blue eyes. I would never wear blue contacts. I couldn't bring myself to be in a relationship with anyone with blue eyes. Those are my choices.

It doesn't give me the right to say blue-eyed people should wear dark contacts, or that they disgust me, because they clearly don't care about their appearance.

Genetic expression leading to coloration of irises isn't associated with the potential for large, unchecked bacterial colonies, unpleasant smells, or large amounts of perspiration.

Long underarm hair is.

You can bet your sweet ass that if a large percentage of people with blue eyes also had the potential to give you genital warts, and this was a common and well-known function of blue eyes, people wouldn't think that blue eyes were very hot either.

I'm not excusing body shaming here, I just think your example is bogus and unrelated to the actual associations playing out here.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about the underarm bacterial colonies. There's this great new invention, it's called "soap". It's done wonders for me. Try it!

Re: I love...

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2013-11-27 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I have. It's pretty great. However, it doesn't stop the association from happening. For example, it can work kind of like this:

Long underarm hair is associated with men -> men tend to have more testosterone -> testosterone causes men to smell and sweat more (in general) -> long underarm hair is smelly and sweaty.

Same goes for associating long underarm hair with people who don't tend to other socially prescriptive personal hygiene regimens, some of which are useful, some of which are just there to encourage you to buy more beauty products. People don't think about the usefulness, they just think about the fact that people who don't groom tend to smell, and thus another association is born.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Long underarm hair is associated with men

Your basic assumption is faulty. It really depends on what country you're in/from and even, sometimes, what part of what country.

All you can really say is that you or possibly your region/country make those associations.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Oh come on, how is not shaving your pits going to give people genital warts? And it's not like shaving stops sweat or unpleasant smells or gets rid of unchecked bacterial colonies. That all has to do with washing, not with body hair.

You're being as ridiculous as the other anon.

Re: I love...

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2013-11-27 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Wat? Not even close to what I meant. Totally the wrong inference there.

I meant that if blue eyes were associated with stuff most people consider "gross" (ex. warts), then you'd find a whole lot of people thinking blue eyes are gross.

Same as the phenomenon where people refuse to drink from a glass with a dead fly in it, even if they've been informed that the fly has been completely sanitized and the drink is totally safe. Transference theory.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Even if it's a false association? People think hair is gross because they tend to associate it with being unclean but it's a false association.

Re: I love...

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2013-11-27 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Especially if it's a false association! People are tens of times more likely to believe in false associations that are more frequently visible than real associations which are infrequently or never visible.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
you can be hairy AND clean. all it takes is some extra time in the shower scrubbing. why is this hard to understand?

do people with long hair on their heads gross you out too? as we all know, the scalp sweats and produces oil. someone with hair isn't any "grosser" than someone without it as long as they bathe thoroughly and regularly.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
But it doesn't even take extra time. My showers are cut down so much when I stopped shaving. It's an amazing time saver.

You can bet your sweet ass that if a large percentage of people with blue eyes also had the potential to give you genital warts, and this was a common and well-known function of blue eyes, people wouldn't think that blue eyes were very hot either.

Unless, in this universe, people found genital warts to be an attractive feature. Maybe having genital warts meant you were of a higher social standing.

You can't just make up some weird ass example that has no basis in reality to "prove" your point.

Bacteria grows on your underarms whether or not hair is present. People with and without hair can and do keep their natural odors in "check" with soap and deodorant.

Re: I love...

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2013-11-27 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I realize that. But the other anon made a comparison that had absolutely no relevance to the reasons people think stuff is gross, so I made up a dumb example in order to illustrate the associative context at work. It wasn't supposed to have a basis in reality.

I also realize a lot of the associations around underarm hair aren't true, but that doesn't stop people from believing them.

tbh, I like hair. I just don't think someone who doesn't is automatically shaming other people for having that preference.

Re: I love...

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-11-27 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Some may not be automatically shaming people with their usage of the word gross, but when you are using that word in addition to unhygienic and in a discussion about body hair, it's more likely than not that there's some shaming going on. Body hair is just one of those subjects.

People think less of you are a women who doesn't shave herself smooth. People think less of you if you're a man with back hair who doesn't shave. (Men have a little more leeway, but back hair tends to be universally thought of gross.)

Re: I love...

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2013-11-27 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but in this case I didn't really see anything that immediately jumped out at me generalizing to a population rather than just about the presence or absence of the hair itself.

I see how you could object to the use of the word gross as a label, but it didn't seem to me as if it was being used that way here.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
In my universe the only attractive feature is being a green skull girl.

I'd like your universe if it weren't so fucked up.

Re: I love...

+1. There's a difference between "I don't like that hairstyle" and "that hairstyle is so gross."
chardmonster: (Default)

Re: I love...

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-11-27 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah. But you also have people acting that women like me who shave their underarms are somehow disempowered or don't love their bodies enough.

I just don't like how it looks. It takes me all of ten seconds in the shower to get rid of it. I don't think wanting it gone makes me oppressed somehow.

But I don't think expressing an opinion in a thread asking what your opinion is somehow untoward. People have the right to think it's gross. People have the right to think it's wonderful. Who the fuck cares?
